Last Friday my car started making some weird noises and drove like a pig, i tracked the clicking noise down to being the exhaust cam shaft key that connects/joins with the CAS (cam angle sensor), basically it snapped off! I have been told that i will need to replace the exhaust camshaft completely. As i would prefer to avoid going to a workshop, i am going to have a go at changing the camshaft myself. I have never done anything like this and have heard about all the terrible things that can happen if you get it wrong and screw up your timing, but stuff it I am still going to have a go. If anyone out there can give me any advice or tips on changing an exhaust camshaft in an RB20DET it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers lads

And hey, if i do smash my valves to tiny little pieces.. maybe an rb26 conversion might be happening a little sooner rather than later. :muff:

set the motor to top dead centre and mark the crank pulley and cam gears to align with something, anything and mark it so it will be very visible... dont need to do much but loosen the tensioner off and take hte camshaft bearing caps off and reef it out, the slap new one in

this exact thing happened to me
i had to replace cas and cam
however i got a workshop to do it
not a bad idea to tackle it yourself if u have the time, as there can be a fair amount of labour involved timing the cam

Also one more thing, what tools are required?

I've got the usuals, shifters, spanners, sockets, screwdrivers...

I am borrowing a timing light and a torque wrench - anything else?

Nah, had a change of mind after several dreamers and tyre kickers came through. Just over it, so i've decided to keep her and go spastic on it.

Spastic in relation to my funding... compared to many others, not so spastic after all.

be original put in E46 or 1uzft, or just stick to the rb series...its up to you... :D

either way....you will eventually have traction issues with a 32.... :( doh

hehehe yeah, i don't really care about times and power etc. I just want something reliable and fun. Planning to stick with the RB20 as it's nice and cheap.

i think u need to get your plates [D1 SPEC] back, once youve finished the engine conversion. should be drift spec as u already got the tein coilovers, struts etc.
