My friend managed to fill his A4 with regular unleaded instead of 98RON and its now runny like shit

Has since run 3 tanks of 98 and its still fucked...

What has he done? Injectors clogged? We have no idea...whats the fix and is he looking at big bucks

Expensive lesson learnt im guessing...don't fill up whilst fucked up :)

putting regular ULP should not make an A4 run like sh*t, I'd say your friend had a problem prior to this and now it's just gotten worse.

how bad is it actually running?
struggling to idle? low on power? dropped a cylinder??

is it stock? turbo?
could have burnt a exhaust vave

If the ECU is learning, and it detected knock and pushed timing back in learn mode after the new fuel, and kept it there since, commonly a cold boot of the ECU is in order, providing it doesnt have backup power.

Remove negative terminal from battery for atleast 30 mins, to an hour. Replace and test drive. It should hunt for maps and keep ramping up timing = better.

Let us know.

Symptoms are low on power and 'studdering' higher in the rev range intermitantly...

Will try the below fix of ECU reset...remap...see what happens - he is going to so owe me a drink if that works

Thanks heaps everyone for the tips - will post up late on the weekend and let ya know how he goes!

Bad fuel may have fouled the plugs. Try replacing if all else fails.

Remove plugs, check the electrodes and the colour, if its black, probably best to replace them. Otherwise as said, run out your current tank, put in preferred fuel type and reset your ECU. Should run OK as long as nothing else major has been fucked (i.e fuel pump, lines, injectors e.t.c)
