you are right... he didn't say it was fake.
Just an underhanded comment open for biased interpretation...
Are you happy now?
I interpreted it the other way, that he was complimenting the fact it was IIII instead of IV.
And yes I am quite happy, thanks for asking.

I was always taught, and led to believe, that IV was "4" in Roman Numerals..
http://www.roman-numerals.org/chart10.html Confirms it..
So, forgive my ignorance, but why is it better to have IIII as "4" ?
I don't know if it's better, it's just something that's always been done on clock/watches.

I'm confused. Is IIII or IV the correct characters for Roman #4?
IIII
Look at all the old buildings. Freo prison, perth town hall clock, 1000 + year old buildings around Europe (except France I think ).

Shepherd gate clock in Greenwich... note 24 hour analogue... where else would you find a 24 hour analogue clock?
My understanding it was taught wrong as I think it was one of the kings/Dictators that didn't like the IIII as it wasn't ascetically pleasing to his eye therefore ordered it to be taught IV because it's what he liked.

The IIII is called a 'watchmaker's four' - I believe the only reason it is like that is to make it look better or more balanced on the dial.
IV is still correct everywhere else Roman Numerals are used.

Looking for a bit of advice here.
I'm planning on buying a used Omega online and I'm almost ready to pull the trigger. I've got two examples lined up, what's the best way to check the credibility of the sellers?
One is on timezone.com and the other is on chrono24.com. Chrono24.com has a "trusted seller since *" accreditation, I assume this is a good indication. Timezone.com, however has nothing. It's just a forum user's account.
Any help here would be appreciated :)
cheers
Edit: Emailed both of them, Timezone.com got back to me, had sold already. Just waiting for reply from the other one.

So I got curious in the IIII vs IV.
From what I could read in Short
Roman times didn't use IV for 4, because IV are the first two letters of the name of their king of the gods, IVPITER as written in Latin. Therefore the IV was not to be used as it was thought to insult the gods, the IIII was to be used. Therefore even the Sundials had the IIII.
Louis XIV didn't like the IIII as a 4 as he thought it was unbalanced and aesthetically unpleasing on the eye and orderd the IIII to be IV as he liked that.
You really have to dig deep with the reading, so much conflicting information but... 1000-2000 year old artifacts are consistent with the IIII even in documents not representing clocks.
Interesting... all I know in school (the Bulkins) I was taught it as a IIII.

You won't have issues with chrono24 sellers.
As with the bloke wanting a big blingy watch for his small wrists. There is plenty of good brands that make watches in the 38/40 mm size. A 42 mm is probably small enough to look big on your wrist.

Interesting.
I was always taught IV. Which is also more consistent with the way the rest of the number sequence, moving to the next sequence of 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000 etc you place the minor numeral before the major of the next sequence.
I was in belgum a few years ago and a town hall in Bruges or Antwerp I can't remember which one had the year of construction in roman numerals and it was written incorrectly. I pointed it out to the tour guide and he agreed after I explained it to him and didn't know why it was written that way..
Cant remember the year but it was 16-17th century. For arguments sake say it was 1645, it was written on the building as XVIVLV wich it 16 and 45 separately where it should be written MDCXLV.

I know they're legit, but wondering if their in-house movements are up to par with other companies, and getting their own movements serviced/repaired could potentially be expensive compared to price of watch. Warranty wise it is quite limited. Since found out it has an ETA movement so reliability shouldn't be an issue.

Deep Blue are being shit pingpingpingpings and not replying to my emails re bezel from the black deep star 1000... Do not want to buy second watch just for the bezel
After hearing a lot about the Seiko 5 'Sea Uchin' I decided to bite the bullet and buy my first watch. I like the idea of the mechanical movement, and the stainless diver style is probably my preferred look as a new comer.
I believe this watch has been discussed earlier on in this thread, but from what I can gather, it's a pretty decent watch for someone who is looking for a decent entry level watch?
http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af349/mosfetaus/002-9_zpseb4f0dbf.jpg
Nothing wrong with that at all mate. Seiko's are hard to beat at their respective price point, be it a $100 or a $10,000 watch..
I just can't get past the 5 on the dials of the Seiko 5's and always been a fan of the more classic pieces like the SKX007's (which is the watch that started it all for me) Tunas, Marinemaster's, etc.
Jomashop is so cheap.. almost seems suss.
However the Audemars Royal Oak Grand Complication, or the blue waffle (http://www.jomashop.com/audemars-piguet-watch-26566bcood305cr01.html), is next level.. $1.03m. Reviews worth a read too.

Heaps of guys on watchuseek have. The general consensus is if they have the watch in stock then shipping is really quick (less than a week).
If the item isn't currently in stock then it's a different story, but you can always confirm with them prior to purchasing.
Also, you can buy off their eBay account if you want the added protection of PayPal.

Anywhere that's Australian based thats worthwhile? or do US prices still blow local out of the water?
Depends what your chasing really. The weak Aussie dollar doesn't help. I've bought a few watches from Singapore and Japan and the pricing was competitive.

I think when you weigh up the uniqueness, style and it has an automatic movement it is reasonable. The Miyota movement is apparently pretty comparable to ETA now, splitting hairs but the price difference is enormous. TAG used Seiko movement in their Calibre at one stage too!

SKX007 and SKX009
I want the Made in Japan versions though which more than double the price.

I'm looking to get my zenith rainbow flyback serviced soon, a full overhaul. It has the 405 El Primero movement which whilst it's based on a movement that has been around for many years it's suppose to be quite complex, and not the task for someone that hasn't serviced one before.
Other than sending it to zenith, anyone have a Perth option? I have used all about time before, including some work on this watch, but not to the scale of a full tear down.

Haha it depends a lot on how the watch wears too. In general I don't go over probably 41mm but I have probably smaller than average wrists. The fliegers tend to wear a little larger due to the design and just visual look, 45mm would be massive but truer to what the pilots originally wore back in ye old times.

http://images.bidorbuy.co.za/user_images/252/931252/931252_130620085357_SND419P1b.jpg
I have a Seiko Chronograph Titanium SND419. It's only a 'cheap' watch (can find it online for ~$300) but I've had it for 10+ years and I like it.
Recently the crown along with a few mm of stem have broken away. The crown still stays put in place, but the issue is that I can't wind the watch anymore which is a hassle as the date is not displaying correctly.
Took it to my old stomping ground in Kalamunda and the Kala Jewellers have quoted about $130 to fix it. Do any Antilag Watch Experts know if this is a 'we don't want to fix this' price, or is this a going rate for having to open up a watch and do some repairs (inc. a new replacement part, I assume).
I have Googled and found an official Seiko retail repair cost PDF (http://www.seiko.com.au/system/files/Seiko Service Price List.pdf) which seems to put the retail price of a water resistant Crown/Stem replacement at $50. I assume there may be water pressure tests etc that the jeweller may undertake, plus labor which all adds up.
Essentially is there a "take it my man at xxxxxxx for half the price" or just go with it if the best I'll do is save $20 shopping around? Alternatively I may decide to live with the wrong date because it may not be worth half the price of the watch to fix it.
Cheers.

Personally , if you like the watch and it has useful/sentimental even value to you ... then getting it repaired properly for $130 is better than spending the same money on a shitter.....
Plus, being a Ti watch wearer and collector of all things Ti (just picked up a bargain last week to add to collection) unless they broke disastrously.... I would and have always fixed my Ti ladies..

Edit: Didn't realise this Presage was limited in pieces. Ended up with 0125/3000. While I appreciate the engineering behind some more elaborate watches, the practical clarity of being able to tell the time at a glance is what counts for me. Fleigers and field watches seem to fit that brief. Has been good leaving my phone at the desk/home when I’ve gone out.

Looking to buy an automatic movement watch around $2000 for myself. Love Tags but cannot afford the one I want. How are Tissots automatic movements? Any other watches in this style, automatic and in stainless to take into consideration?
Was looking at these options

https://www.watchshop.com/mens-victorinox-swiss-army-airboss-automatic-chronograph-watch-241620-p99989425.html
So, the Managing Director of the company I work for and myself quite often email each other nice timepieces that we see online etc.
I'm not normally massive fan of TAG Heuer, but I do love the pre-TAG era Heuers, especially the 60's/70's motor racing influenced chronographs, which is what had drawn me to this watch.
Last week I sent him this link- https://timeandtidewatches.com/announcing-selling-10-tag-heuer-autavias-collectors-pack-exclusive-event-launching-monday/
Fast forward to Friday afternoon, I get a confirmation email congratulating me on the purchase, the fucker had bought it for me, I was stunned.
I have been working my ass off this year running 2 projects in Melbourne and it feels good for that to be work to be validated.
The bonus is I'll be in Melbourne while the launch event is on so will be able to pick up the watch in person.
I'll put up a picture of the actual watch once I pick it up.
TL;DR - boss bought me watch / am happy

Lovely watch you have. Heuers have always had that classic yet sophisticated look to them.
Received my new Heuer on Saturday at an event hosted by Time & Tide watches in Melbourne. Decent event with a 5 course lunch and drinks. A lot more fun that just picking it up at an AD.
I am stoked with how well finished it is in the flesh. One to hang on to for sure.

Picked up a Tag Heuer Link Calibre 16 last week as a sort of wedding present to myself! With a lot of the Link range being discontinued now it was hard to track one down, but I managed to get mazzuchellis to track one down and send across from one of their stores in South Australia.
I've wanted one of these for years!

On the topic of 60s/70's watches.. Does anyone here have a good service shop they've used for old automatics? Got a vintage watch needing a service/overhaul.
Also Zak congrats that is a beautiful watch!
I've never personally used them, but I have heard good things about these guys... https://allabouttime.com.au/
What vintage watch is it?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, finally managed to track down a rubber strap and clasp for my Oris Aquis, personally I think it suits it better than the factory bracelet and is my ideal summer watch. Video below;

It's a 50's Paul Burke handed down in the family from RSA. I can't find anything online about it, but it looks like a lot of other watches of that era searching 'incabloc, 25 jewel automatic'. No one has really worn it besides my great grandfather in the 60's 70's. I pretty much want to wear it almost daily so need to make sure that the winding and mechanisms are ticketyboo. Have got a quote back from one mob for $490... Don't mind paying the money i just want to make sure that the shop that does it is the right one.

I've been advised by Michael from the Breitling store (USA) is currently having all this month 50% off the Superocean, Bentley Mark VI, Galactic Unitime, Transocean 38 collections.
Remainder of the store is 20%-40% off. Unheard of them having that huge a discount.
I've used these guys to purchase my watch last time I was there at Woodbury Commons (Woodbury, New York).

I like the Tag better, but they are kind of different styles...
I may also be biased as the Tag does have similar design traits to my IWC
2k Budget - it's a gift so that's the number - can't stretch to 3k just cos.
I am tall with big wrists and arms but also don't want 50mm of bogan flashware.
Not looking for a busy watch - so just dials and numerals are fine.

I see their ads pop up frequently.. from what I've read the cheaper plans are shit you can buy cheaper from aliexpress.. the next levels up are the more pedestrian stuff from the companies which you can most likely find for similar prices via other avenues. I can see the appeal for some but isn't for me.

Buy an SKX, then put 99 a month aside towards something you like the look of and continue to like the look of. Realise SKX can be spiced up with a bezel, bezel insert, and new bracelet. Enjoy SKX whilst still saving. Mod 2 or 3 more times and realise you have have 6-8k set aside for a watch you don't need as the SKX still keeps good time and never lets you down :P

There has been a bit of commotion in Australian used watch sales, where a "trusted" watch reviewer /seller has been accused of selling fake watches. Some of these watches traded for $25k+.
He is based in Perth.

Safe to say, if you have purchased a watch from Chris Essery / Horology House it might be worth taking a closer look at your purchase

ok, had this for a year & its been the perfect mechanical watch. Ive just bought a G. Gerlach Kosmonauta (LED Digital) so I'm not wearing the Steinhart.
Ive also just bought another old heap of a car, so some extra cash would be handy - Watch is in near mint condition, No scratches or chips on the Sapphire & only VERY light desk diving scratches on the bracelet.
Comes with everything you would get if you purchased new like I did - I think it was about $850 delivered & I paid extra for non-Cyclops Chrystal so that was another $100 so probably more if your interested pm an offer.
Cheers

Would make a nice durable daily wear watch and since the Tudor's/Rolex are out of my budget at present these would do a great job it seems.
Will debate with myself or a while and see how I feel in a week or so.
Extremely durable & mine keeps great time only had to adjust it twice in 10 months - I purchased from Singapore via email - took about 2 days to get here & I think they have a 2 year warranty - but its a German madw case with a Swiss movement

How much they charging for service now?
I remember being in the $800 mark about 10 years ago. With the recent price increases, I am guessing it is now more than $1k?
