tag heuer race series - monaco, formula 1, carrera.

Rolex - submariner, daytona, president

just use the p00 watch when going clubbing etc.

cant exactly tell someone ya watch is from bali when they're an australian treasure, never been out of the country and dont know what bali is.

i used to be a watch fan until midway highschool when mobile phones came into play. Any watches i've worn since were not in sync with the actual time (too slack to set or change battery), just purely worn as a fashion accessory.

at 50 buck timex or casio is more accurate then any rolex or patek on the market, even models that cost 100k

depends what you define a decent watch, if its time telling ablities any quartz watch will do.

i would think not junk swiss made mechanical watch pricing begins around 1k going all the way through to 300k+

majority of tags are quartz

zenith and tag are part of the LVMH group and since tag don't do their own inhouse movements, zenity supplies some movements to tag. it used to be mostly ETA movements, but now are moving away from their reliance of ETA.

wouldn't say the majority of them are quartz... the f1 series are quartz, aquaracers are both quartz and mechanical and the rest i believe are mechanical

Nice one!

You obviously don't wear it every day yeah? I'd feel bad wearing an expensive one every day, as there's 110% chance I will scratch it.

Here's my $500 Guess watch shitter, which I bought back in '03. Plenty of scratches everywhere now, although I think it looked pretty good brand new, until I accidently scraped a wall with it. Left a tiny mark on the bezel, but the glass was spotless. Few more mishaps and bang, scratches all over the place. It's been good though, I scuba dive with it too, no problems.

Huh? So you can scrape an expensive watch a few times on a lumpy wall and it won't leave a mark? I find that hard to believe hey. The glass on my watch is still perfect though.

You can run a truck safely over any watch I think, the fact they are pressure resistant to 200 meters, and the rubber is softer than say a brick wall, helps also. I've ran a car over an old Casio watch once, didn't do a thing to it.

your taking it way too far there.

i havent scratched any watches of any of the cheap shit that ive owned on a fucking wall.

light scuffs and scratches are to be expected when wearing a watch, its just life, however, the more expensive watches tend to not get scratched easily.

if you rubbed it against a wall of course its gonna get fucked up, but day to day shit, hitting it against a table/metal etc, more likely to glance off than leave a mark.

Ah, in that case same thing goes for my cheap $500 watch then. Hitting it on a table or something won't do shit to it. In terms of that, there's no difference if the watch costs half a grand, or tens of thousands... If it's a 50 dollar plastic watch, you're probably right.

Only reason I mentioned a wall for example is that it may happen accidentally if you are walking along a narrow corridor and have short sleeves, and you brush up on the wall to let someone through etc. and aren't careful about your watch, for example.

Anyways.... an expensive watch generally doesnt scratch due to it having a sapphire crystal glass. The original Monaco's come with plexiglass so they do scratch, if it gets scratched its a matter of a watch maker - watches of switzerland for buffing the crap out of it...

So did they only make one watch like that?? Or do they make many of the same watches? If there's many, you can't exactly compare them to art, given that there is only ONE mona lisa painting and quite a few of the same watches out there coming out of an assembly line, hand-built or not... if there is only ONE, yeah ok, I can see some rare-spec value in it...

What is so special about the movement? Would you really care if you watch is more accurate to the 0.0000001 second than a 100 dollar shitter? Unless you use it to measure some science experiments to the nanosecond or something... which you wouldn't, what's the point?

Sorry, I still can't see the justification for the huge price, other than the wank factor of telling mates you paid 300K for a watch lol...

Hehe, cool. What's funny is that you wouldn't tell it's a 300K watch just by looking at it. You would have to tell everyone. Fark it, spend 300K on a car, people will know it cost 300K. This watch is a wank factor fail imo unless you carry a big price tag attached to it all the time...

interesting thread..
a little off topic.. you guys are gonna be like my dad when you go old retarded and a little batty

he has over 1100 clocks, stuff from all over the world, clocks are the only mechanical device 300 years ++ that work perfectly. Russian clocks/ watches work in reverse to normal and the face is backwards. hes got french german russian ukranian. Quite an art in it all and can pull the fuckers apart put them back together. some are worth 10's of thousands of dollars

the whole house is constantly going bonkers and not one is the correct time.

When he passes on we will turn his house into a clock museum as it would be too much of an effort to sell them all. His explanation of the clock phenomenomon is that he was a good trains driver, and lived his life by the clock.

loved the Tags and almost bought an auto chrono aquaracer with day/date but it was just too thick - like seemed like a mini grain silo sticking out my wrist hahah..
looked at the carreras/links etc but none of them had wide enough bracelets - they all looked a little skinny on my wrists..

so yeh in the end went with the freelancer and still love it.. its quite simple but still classy and just the right amount of chunkatron to it..

I got a Breitling Navitimer, it's a knock off but a real quality fake, set me back $400 from China. Better then the 20k the real thing costs. Keeps time with Japanese quarts moment and the slide rule is fully functional which is handy for quick calculations when I fly cross country.

Sif you'd dip a $2M watch into water. Sif you'd even wear it anywhere with mildly harsh elements. You'd probably have it covered with all sorts of protective cushions and what not... and have your hand enclosed in a locked safe if you're passing through Mirabooka... lol!

Fark me, what on earth costs $2M bucks in this watch?? A bit of platinum? Other than perhaps expensive materials it's made of (of which value doesn't amount to anywhere near that much) what's different between this watch, and a $10K watch? Internals are probably the same lol! Does it come with prepaid 24 hour security for the next two decades? I totally understand $10K watches... $2M watches on the other hand sound like a perfect item for a rich sucker...

nang3

ROFL yeh i agree!! but then again if your loaded, throwin away $2m on a watch prolly seems the right thing to do to show everyone just how rich you are haha.. exclusivity is what the very rich like!!

What do some of you watch gurus think about buying a circa 60's-70's omega seamaster as an investment? provided that watch is in perfect condition - would something like that increase in value or would it be not negligible? What would you expect to pay for a watch like that? thanks in advance.

RGVFAST
17-05-2009, 12:06 PM
i dont think you would lose money on it but making money is doubtful unless its very rare,it might also be difficult to move if you needed the money in a hurry, and thats what investments are all about is to make cash and to be abel to access it when you need.

id never buy a watch as an investment since there are far better proven investing options (term deposits/shares/property)

if you like the watch buy it, wear it and if it gose up in value over the course of owning it consider it a bonus

http://lh3.ggpht.com/shaileshdoke/SBJDbIN0pVI/AAAAAAAAAgw/0mv4FIWBYSo/f1_carbon_watch%5B7%5D.jpg

The F1/Carbon GMT watch is constructed of carbon fibre, Swarovski crystal, rubber and metal. The designer of this watch John Pszeniczny want to give a turbo boost to the time.

This watch is inspired by the world of F1 race cars. Embedded with 18 identical rubies, this watch tell the time in everyone of the 18 cities on the 2008 F1 circuit. It has a built in stopwatch and laptimer too.

With a $30,000 price tag, its a steal!

I dont really know fuck all about watches but thought it would be a good pressie. Something i can hold onto for a long time, hold some sentimental value etc. So whats good and whats not? I think they said somewhere around $1000 - $1200. Cheers guys :)

Nothing will be solid gold for that price. At best it'll be gold plate, at worst it'll be just gold coloured.

Get a nice mechanical stainless steel watch. For that price range id look at a Swiss brand called Oris. They have nice models at decent prices.
