checked out the timing finally in the 280, they are supposed to run 6 stock but turns out it was set to 14deg. Still felt sluggish, currently running 98 due to the cheap price of fuel. Anyhoo even on crappy caltex 98 i bumped it up to 20ish. No ping up to 6500 or under load, definitely noted a difference and also pops flames on redline shifts. If it doesnt ping is there any issue i need to be concerned with?
how are you 100% sure its not detonating?

When the rods come out of the block you know you've advanced ingition timing too much.

Agreed, detonation may not always be audible. I'd assume it's not running any sort of knock sensor also...
Very hard to say 100% whether there is detonation or not.
I wouldn't worry if it was an RB...they love timing.

On an old school motor, just advance it till she pings on the preffered choice of fuel and then back it off a tad untill ping goes away.
Never have a problem

if you pull the plugs out of each cyl, have a look for small bits of ally on them, thats usually a good sgn shes detonating...
however if shes popping flame, it might be rich enough to deal with it, plug colour can also give you a measure of this...
Whatever S. Thomas says is fine minus 30%
