View Full Version : Problem with new wheels

I just got some new wheels on my s15. I assumed they would fit without a problem but I was wrong. The front rims and tyres are rubbing on my coilovers. The wheels are 18 X 9 with an offset of +32. I currently have a 7mm spacer up front but they are still rubbing. I was thinking of going to a 15mm bolt on spacer and probably getting wider front guards. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I have also decreased the tyres from 235 to 225 because I thought only the tyres were rubbing but when I pulled them off I found the rim to be rubbing as well. I'm not sure to really call as I have spoken to some tyre places and they say they should fit ok but they definately don't.

Spacers are bad news and can result in studs snapping off. The studs arent supposed to support the weight of the car, the locator on the hub that fits into the wheel hole is. When you fit spacers youre transferring the weight from the hub to the studs which is all bad. An exception is the spacers that bolt to the hub and fit snugly over the locator, and have their own studs and locator.

The rims must be the wrong offset if they are rubbing on the struts and the only real cure is to change the wheels.

definitely wrong offset... good luck with it though.

remember kids... offset matters

Camber bolts in the top of the hub to pull the coily away. Then Camber tops to rectify camber.

Do u have much neg camber on the fronts?

I currently have no negative camber up front. I got some bolt on spacers yesterday so I will give them a shot and run camber if need be. If it still rubs I will have to sell the wheels as it's been a mission. I agree the offset is no good for a s15 and the fact that they are 9" up front doesn't help.

you could also sell your coilovers, lowered springs and standard struts MIGHT clear them, if you have your old struts, chuck em in and see if they rub

My tyres were rubbing slightly on coil under load despite being correct offset,etc- did this and fixed.
I have -3.75 up front but you don't need that much, bit of -ve camber should fix.

I hope they are "hubcentric" bolt on spacers. That means the spacer/Hub will take the weight, not the studs.

Remember though, any type of spacers is considered "illegal" in WA.

Really you are better off biting the bullet and buying correct offset wheels for your car.

This thread will help you with checking your correct offset for your S15 and any new wheels that you buy:

yeah they are hub centric spacers, I really don't want to have to run them if I could avoid it. My car came with coil overs so I don't have the standard struts. I have contemplated buying the correct offset wheel but from japan it will take something like 4 months.

I spoke to wilkinson suspension yesterday and they recommended that I do not put on the 15mm spacer as the standard wheel studs are longer and will need to be cut down. He recommended I run at least a 25mm bolt on. Does anyone know the length of the standard s15 wheel studs? Also if anyone is running less than a 25mm spacer did the wheel studs have to be cut and is this a major issue?
Thanks any help most appreciated as I thought I knew which way I was going to go but now not so sure.

The only reasons not to cut studs are a) its a shit job and b) once theyre cut they're normally too short with the spacers removed.

I'd suggest the hub centric feature serves purely to locate the wheel and ensure concentrity - not to take the load from the studs. The only way studs are going to fail is if they're not tightened properly or by corrosion.

not sure if u took a wheel down to wilkinsons but alot of rims accomodate running spacers with petruding factory studs.

ah, the spacer debate again..

hubcentric is all meh, who here has hubcentric wheels anyway?

I ran 25mm spacers and then 20mm spacers again, on the front of my FC, and that car got beat up hard at wanneroo and collie.. never had a problem.

I'd suggest selling the rims.
