Look at an E36 (mid 90s) 318is
Same body as the 318i, but with a severe diffierence in handling and power - 117kw-odd twin cam 1.9L lump of responsive BMW joy
I dunno what those Bavarians did to the suspension package but the thing reallty does turn on a rail...
My housemate had one until someone decided to run a stop sign last year and tore the front off it... was more fun to drive than my turbo, and comfy as hell.
These things sell for low to mid 20s in near mint cond. and less if you're happy with a scratch or two. :boink:

seen the light with the bmw. I drive a 320i which isnt to ballsy but for 24 you can definetly get yourself a 92 - 93 325i which has balls and is still comfier then most newer cars around. 19's , exhaust , dump it , kit , custom stereo , tint = win

13 flat at like 125 mph. Wheelspin was a bit of an issue, but new owner should have no problems handling it - his other car is a 10.3 @ 140 mph Monaro.
gtrken
26-04-2005, 01:55 PM
125mph means it has the HP.
Lee Sampsons 180 sx ran 128mph trap speed and he did an 11.18 at Drag Combat. Using our set of BFG's helped with getting the power down.
And Lee has 435 rwhp on our dyno.

Its actually a laggy pussy compared to my normal every day driver , that makes over 600 rwhp and full boost at 1500 rpm :) Monaro (http://chipmaster.com.au/Project%20Monaro8.htm) , normally runs 10.2@140 with a lazy drive  , car has 9 sec potential but I cant use it agian at the strip without a cage and chute .
I bought this to have a little light cruise fun with , found a lot of the commodore guys are total wankers , hopefully you guys arent as tightly strung . :)
I will post up a dyno graph comparing the 2 later. The girlfriend luvs it so it will most likely become her weekend toy
Was a little hard to get any traction at all at drag combat with the crap stock tyres , had some slicks arranged but they didnt fit under the guards on the day.
Car needs a lot of work to get it into good condition again , will be done over the next few months to make it a nice driver.
Dont know if the wolf will stay in the car yet , it makes good power and the idle quality is ok BUT everywhere else it is a little dog ( not sure if the mapping has even been completed or somone inexperinced has been at it ), fuel economy is attrocious , uses more than my Monaro , I think I did 300ks of freeway driving over the weekend and used 2 tanks , i will see if a proper remap of everywhere in between fixes the issues before ditching it for a Autronic.
rear suspension area needs major rework , car has horrible driveline vibration above 100ks and the diff locker is not the best setup for a street car , may be great for a drifter but not nice in traffic.
not sure what box is in the car but if it does not have straight cut gears then the bearings are stuffed , whines real bad in the lower gears.
You may read this as I am unhappy with the purchases but I am happy wiht he car, knew all these faults before I bought the car and knowing they can be rectified I made the decision but I can see why it was on the market and not selling :)

those wankers help put food on your plate by buying your services, and put fuel in your bus which you sleep in !!!!
No you got that a little wrong , I get my living from a nice group of genuine people who drive commodore , falcons and a assortment of modifed cars all over Australia , the small group of wankers ( and they proudly call themselves that :flipa: ) I wont work on their vehicle because I found them to be two faced back stabbers and true wankers , unfortuately that small group took all the pleasure out of socialising from there actions , I distanced myself from them long ago so then they decided to attack their best friend - my girlfriend , from that day on they were mud.
raistlin , you believe there little hype , even down to a bus that I am supposed to live in :asshole: ,( was a temp solution while looking for a house ) , maybe you need to look a little further why there friends such as Zoomy , Jess , Courtney and myself have totally distanced ourselves from them and would not even give them the time of day - YOU COULD BE THEIR NEXT VICTIM.
Back onto topic , you sold your car yet Raistlin , I have a bus that would suit you , very dusty and dirty but great for cruisin

go the delco on the 32 i reckon.... :)
drifter
27-04-2005, 01:50 PM
Delco would and could run it ok ,if I was starting from scratch with no injectors or harness then it would be a good budget option as anyone can fit and wire it up with the right advice , but since budget is not the option and it already has the correct injectors ( which are completely wrong for a delco) then far better to go to a good quality aftermarket system , which basically means the base autronic is the starting point for a good system that will hold its tune properly. Motec could also do the job but at the low end of the motec range its pretty crude , start spending some serious coin on the motec and they become top notch.
MrMayhem

Good to see its racing again
I even like the stripe colour change lol sorry sean
Danny you might have to keep the mech diff the std viscous guys really give up fast, a gtr plate lsd a and rear end /cradle might be the go for every day duties
drifter
27-04-2005, 02:01 PM
yeh , I was going to keep the diff that in it for seroius duty work and change to something a little more user freindly for the street.
it will be at the track more reguarly when I get some slicks for it ( waste of time without them ) and I feel a rim change coming on , something in the 18's range I think, maybe even the same style as I am running on the Monaro would suit the car better.
Motec could also do the job but at the low end of the motec range its pretty crude , start spending some serious coin on the motec and they become top notch.
Not sure if you mean the new Motecs, the M400 still shits on most ECUs....although the M800 is the shiznit, and it definitely is top notch with more outputs, etc.
drifter
27-04-2005, 02:38 PM
Not sure if you mean the new Motecs, the M400 still shits on most ECUs....although the M800 is the shiznit, and it definitely is top notch.
low end Motec is built down to a budget but does still shit all over the low end ecu's that are on the market. Fortunately in this world you get exactly what you pay for.
Not sure what you mean, cos even a base model M400 has 840 load points, compared to Autronics 512..
All Motecs have the same tuning resolution, just different number of outputs and injector drives, etc.
Not saying that Autronic or any other ECU is shit, but I am saying that its not true that M400 is a budget ECU...its just as capable as an M800, but of course when you start spending more dollars on options, you get more useability from the higher priced Motec (depending on your application of course)
drifter
27-04-2005, 03:08 PM
Not load point as all ecu's will interpolate between points quite well - more in the , software , datalogging and all the tunability , m400 is a big step from m4 etc and is a great ecu , just dont find it as good as the autronic for the same $$$. Both are excelent ECU's and well worth the $$$$ and no comparison at all to the $1400 specials
Software is the same, in which case the motec software is the ducks nuts at any point. You do pay for more software 'options' (as well as advanced functions) pending on your requirements but the base m400 software and processing power is the same as the almighty m880.

Nice monaro! Have followed its build somewhat in PSC looks absolutely insane.
Watching the r32 at DC, seemed like you hardly opened it up in first and second (didnt really hear the gate till half track!)

No traction at all so I had to pedal it constantly until about 1/2 track where I could lean on it and even then it was breaking traction.
Monaro is a little tamer now as I sold the blower a few weeks ago , now waiting on a bigger one to go on before getting serious about running a 9 ( was a 2.4l whipple , going to go up to a 3.3l whipple for a little more boost :) )

Danny try the .68 housing on that turbo as i think it will improve midrange dramatically and shoudnt' affect the top end at all due to the large p - trim turbine wheel .
Also with drivetrain vibration above 100k's you will need to go back to a 2 piece tailshaft i would say.

How bad is the vibration? I get a very slight vibration at about 100k's but seems to go away as I accelerate. (New 1piece)

haha dont worry danny, when paul and I picked up the car, we had a race on the freeway, he dropped it back into third and light up the tyres! I symptathise with the lack of traction :P
Seems like it does good BUUUURNOUTS, as all RWD R32s should :D

It does feel like a driveshaft vibration , I was going to look at the uni's and balance first but may be easier to get a good 2 piece..
Will look into another housing as well , could do with a little more mid range.
Not load point as all ecu's will interpolate between points quite well
Well see, this is the reason that high end ECUs are much better than lower end ones...the lower end ones "interpolate" IE educated guess, where as the high end ECUs have tuning points available which the tuner can utilise to make a vehicle drive a lot nicer.
If you've ever driven a vehicle which gets stuck between 2 load points, and the ECU cant tell its arse from its head, then you'll know what I'm talking about..

Mmmmmm
I think Danny as an |EFI TUNER| may be able to make and educated decision on his choice of ecu

You got it , there is more to a ECU than just the sales garb
Motec and Autronic make good ECU's , been playing with a new one at present by AEM ( america engine management ) on a blown stroked dodge viper - has good potential on a lot of inport cars - nearly as good control and function as a good factory ecu

Played around with the AEM CDI at all ?
