Title pretty well says it all

Plan to run around 12psi cooled, from a 2nd hand turbo with an external 'gate setup.

Looking for (preferably cheapish) options in the 2nd hand market that would suit the 3.8L.

So far most have said T3/T4 or the Garrett from an XR6T. Both of these are rumoured to work quite well on a few cars already. One gentleman from JC forums had a home grown setup in a VP that saw great success using an 'ancient Holset turbo'..

Opinions please
Sam

gt30 or gt35.

Not like your lacking displacement so go gt35... maybe even a t04z?

But maybe not enough revs to make use of it.

Not revving this motor past 5500. 12psi cooled on totally stock motor is the goal.

Anyone know what the XR turbos usually go for 2nd hand?

if its only going to 5500, then a xr6 turbo is probably ideal.

round the 1500 mark i think.

damn. will keep an eye out for a cheapie.

Was hoping to keep this build under $1k or within a few hundred. All pipework to be done in house, budget being the word of the day.

HOWEVER I was going to buy a cam to suit but decided against it as the stock cam is almost perfect for the job anyway, so I might put the money I didn't spend on that towards a better turbo..

Think I got rid of my xr6 turbo for under a grand a few years back, might be better on the 3.8 v6 but its a dog of a turbo on an rb!

why do you want an external gate ?
half the turbo's mentioned are internally gated

go internal gate if your doing this on a budget , it will be your cheaper option

id look at a mazda rx7 s4 or s5 turbo possibly a highflowed one.

rotomotion 9452 1500 had a green commo wagon down their for ages which was V6 turbo's you could ask them what that car had on it ?

mate of mine did an unopened VS with a T3/T4, made just under 400rwhp from memory.

hahaha nice link
I might blow the $1k budget but we'll see, I already have the s1 tubular style headers and y pipe that I'll modify into a collector setup, just need the rest of the bits :)

Thanks mate, since realised that's a good idea. XR6T Garrett will be the turbo of choice though I think. Since I'm looking at such a good quality turbo, I should be able to get away with an internally 'gated 12psi no worries.

That was my other option for a turbo but I think the GTR is winning

wont the XR6T turbo be more laggy in the 3.8 due to the fact its only getting boost from 3 cyl opposed to 6...

perhaps having the XR6T turbo on one side with a 2L rated turbo on the other

just an idea, could be done within your budget if your doing all pipe work and line feeds yourself

??
Its still a 6, only dropping .2L from xr6t donk, so it'll be a good fit... esp. with the extra compression of an NA :D

yep will be feeding it from all six using reversed stock headers and a collector pipe

so have 2 turbos, xr6 turbo off 1 bank and another smaller turbo of the other???

yeah that's what he's getting at.. a staged setup like the Liberty B4s etc, a big and a small. Works well when tuned properly. BUT for simplicity's sake, I'll just pipe it all into the one and through a nice FMIC.

In other news:
I have discovered that fuelling the thing will be easier than I thought. Stock FPR will do the trick, all I need is around 32lb injectors and a higher rated fuel pump. Running a 2 bar MAP sensor, already got the tune sorted, memcal as cheap and as good as they come.

Would be better off going parallel twin turbo, sequential is a pita.
A pair of s14 turbos in parallel would go nicely on a 3.8L :D

TJ

Sequential would be extremely complex to setup and tune, pass.

lmao

12psi cooled should be safe enough for what I'll use it for. It's a daily, I don't feel like grenading it any time soon.

I refuse to set up the piping for twins, single is the go.
