Just taken my stock rb20 turbo off (16V) and I noticed the exhaust wheel and around the wastegate flap is white, never seen this before, I would expect it to be sooty... I have taken it off because its chirpy but keen to know what the whiteness means...

white = running lean as far as i know
I dont recall my rb20 turbo ever being white when i took it off so I dont think it is ceramic related

I got it dyno'd a couple of weeks ago and my car was running rich, was ok coasting but had AFR of about 12... Since then I have cleaned the AFM and installed a new oxy sensor, i havnt noticed any lack in power, actually its improved a little bit and just slightly improved fuel economy
was wonderin if its a signal of the seal going on the turbo

Could be a water line/seal gone. Post a pic of it up, coolant dries up white.

didnt realise there was a water seal, thought it was just like a water jacket in the housing then again I have never pulled a turbo down to look :P
makes sense because it all looks washed and clean, its only like this on the exit of the turbo, the flange that bolts to the manifold is very sooty so it aint comn from the engine.

when i took one of mine off, it had the same whiteness, i put it down to the ceramic wearing off the exhaust wheel and coating everything with a fine layer.
was it giving the old death whine when spooling up?

that is normal, dont worry about it.
black soot = unburnt fuel
turbos get 950 deg c plus = burnt fuel
pull your spark plugs - if they are the same colour, then your lean.
Ceramic turbo, so of course its white...sort of like your cups and plates in your kitchen.

Yeh but I didnt expect it to be clean, I wiped my finger around the cast iron section and its pretty clean, just worried me a bit because it wasnt sooty, the 16V i pulled off my last 32 was sooty, my last couple of 25 turbos i pulled off were sooty as well so just seemed strange, better check my plugs to be safe..
