View Full Version : Radial shaft play in a t04z.
It's only a couple of hundred kms old, but the radial shaft play measures up as .027" (as if the bearing pack is gone, or shaft bent). Specs from Garrett say maximum allowance is .019".
I've been told by one shop that i can't have it balanced as it is, which i needed to do before using it. They didn't give me an exact explanation of why though.
Would it shit itself on the VSR, or would it shit itself eventually even after balancing, or would it just be unable to balance?
Do i have myself another paperweight here?
I am probably going to seek another professional opinion tomorrow, but until then, discuss.

mates brand spanker hks t04z moved shitload. enough to foul on the comp housing and more..
So it failed then?
I just got a call back from another shop. I gave them details and they said the exact same thing as i've already been told.
I think i'm gonna return it and fork out for a brand spanker aye.

does it have a plastic bearing cage?
I can't remember, why's that?
*edit* Actually I would probably say steel due to the price of the replacement pack ($700+).

nah, just slapped it in and up and running. has done minimal ks (sub 10,000) but is still going
once they get oil pumped into them and they doing bullshit rpm - they allign themselves.
pretty sure thats how it works anyway but dont quote me.

I have a brand new one sitting here that also has a shitload of shaft play to the point i thought the bearings were fucked but appartently they are all like that.
I would be interested to see what happens anyway.
Have you had a price on a rebuild from anyone.
I got quotes ranging from $1000 to $1400! And that was just to change the bearing packs!

Fuck that may as well buy a new one, but you would probably end up with the same problem.

Not sure why they have a heap of play in them.
I compared my gt35r to the t04z and the t04z feels like and old fucked bushed turbo compared to the 35r

What did you end up doing to this smashed it in or rebuilt it.
The problem was, i bought turbo knowing it had a slight flaw (that's why i got it cheap). The rear housing was warped and the blades scuffed on the inside of it while it was in his race car. But it was only 200kms old and that's quite a common problem on a t04z (or so i've been told). Upon first inspection by one of his mechanics they said it just needed machining back and re-balancing and it would be good to go. But no one here in Perth would balance it for me, as it was worn in and the radial shaft play was excessive (but normal for a used turbo). And i hadn't bought the product from them, so why should they give a shit?
So i sent it back to S.A where i bought it from and the guy was nice enough to rebuild and balance it for me using his contacts. A second inspection on it and they realized it needed a bit more work than just a balance. He said all up it cost him around $900. That included new oil seals, new rear housing (old one was warped beyond saving), rear wheel was redressed and everything balanced up 100%.
I thought it was pretty decent of him to admit he sold me a product under false pretenses, and then make amends using his own money.
So yeah, it's on it's way back now :D
