View Full Version : SR20DET VCT
Hello,
Bit confused, it appears i have developed the ever so common VCT solenoid issue.
My question, i am looking at dropping in some HKS 272 cams and valve springs, rather then fixing VCT solenoid, could i invest in Adjustable cam gears and use a NVCT set-up as such?
Or are these 2 completeley different?

Running 272 cams will destroy the VCT unit if you decide to retain it.
You can either replace the intake gear with an adjustable cam gear, or an s13 gear (N-VCT). You may need to swap the dowel over as the s14/15 dowel is longer (however this may be on the exhaust side)
Throw in Cam gears, New cams, then set and forget :)

Ok, with loosing the VCT i heard you loose a bit of the mid range torque. or will the cam gear adjust that?
Further more. Does anyone know of an Authorised HKS dealer in Japan.
I will be there in a couple weeks and thought i could save some cash buying direct.
Can't find shit on google or HKS website

Performance wholesale is the australian distributor for HKS
Cam gears will shift your power where you want it, they dont gain you power

dont underestimate the torque and midrange that the VCT will give you, particularly if using something like nistune where you can play around with its timing come tuning time.

It doesn't affect performance at all, just an annoying sound.
yeh I'm aware of the performance, just was worried i may damage motor on start ups. Once accelerating i will be fine as reving will increase oil pressure.
Thanks
On another note. Been googling but no answers.
I have a feeling i have a bit of a timing chain rattle. I believe replacing the tensioner should fix this. Wondering what damage will occur until i make this change. Could i bend valves, will my timing actually be out?
Anyone else come across this issue with their SR?
