View Full Version : Auto issues...

I think my auto is a piece of shit... actually, I think it is the convertor.

I run the re401A so its the standard Nissan auto, it has been rebuilt by KEAS, it smashes through the gears hard so there is no issue with shift speed (big servos, kevlar bands, other stuff lol, full manual valve body). I also run a 4200rpm convertor from MV automatics.

Have been talking to a few people with my issues down at the drags. I consistently run between 2.2 and 2.4 (60 foot) no matter what I do. I dont have major issues with traction when running street tyres as I have a fair amount of weight in the boot because of the stereo.

What can I do to improve this? Is anyone here a pro that could come for a drive and see how piss poor it is off the line? I am tired of spending bulk on it, being told that this will fix it and this will fix it but nothing fixes it...

Not sure if going manual is smart as I do want to drag it and dont want to lose to much down at the strip.

Just chasing some thoughts on what I could try/look out for.

Sounds like it has to spool as it leaves the line. The only real way to fix it is to have a transbrake valve body which would give you full boost off the line but would be a bit of a pig to drive on the street with no reverse braking. Using nos off the line would help, something like a 75 shot. You could muck around with different converters but it gets costly. The only converters ive seen MV do are just modified stock converters which are really only good for like 3500rpm unless he is getting them made elsewhere these days.

Smash a Turbo 700 in it & sell the re401A?

No one wants the bloody thing :(

Yeah MV originally made me the convertor from a stock one, but didnt work the way it should so he purpose built me one. It gets relatively high rpm (around 3700, 4.11 diff gears) but still not enoough.

Cactus, 4200 is a lot of stall ... dont feel its over stalled ?. In the years of building quick autos, so often people overstall autos and loose a lot of initial line pressure.

Not NOR anytime at all so i could test drive it ?.

If you've seen this thing spool, you'd understand why it has a 4200rpm stall

Saf I'm sure me and the old man can arrange to come round... Been meaning to catch up since you missed out on that dinner with Leon!

I also have a 2500rpm converter here but that was even worse. Was struggling to keep 60 foot under 3 seconds then lol.

Smash a 1UZFE with some turbo's in it, and dump that piss poor nissan crap in the garbage...........that,ll fix it.
Wait hold that thought, that's just more work for me
Do what SAf said :)

How much rpm do you get on the brake? what psi are you seeing at that rpm? When you come off the brake does it come off boost or feel like its just revving?

Ah so THATS what your mum told you mate :) . She left out some of the crucial evidence on why i was a no show. LOL.

Actually were catching up on friday. And yea 2500 will be too low. PM me the details of the snail, cams, displacment, and ill also have a chat to Gonzo at AllFast. I think (?) that he is a Keas agent.

HBilly, While were at it mate, why dont we just throw in a V12 Toyo motor ? :)

1UZ, twin GT3076R's and one of my old mans manual race TH400's. Could do a TH700, but cant ensure it wont push a servo out the side of the case :) .

I see about 3600rpm I would say. Maybe 7 psi ... It feels like it dies in the ass when I get off the brake. It doesnt free rev, but it doesnt seem to hold boost and really launch.

i would go a t400 so you can run a proper stall not one of these "custom" built ones. Will chat to a mate who knows a bit about convertors n see wat he says.

when you say it runs 2.2-2.4 60's, what happens?

you get off the brake and it just rolls forward slowly until you pick up speed then it gets on boost or is it spinning up off the line and not hooking up?

I have some suitable converters here. I have a 7 1/2" that has a 6000 stall that holds around 400-500hp and sees 30 psi on the brake and has done 1.4 60 ft's. Its currently in a car but might come out shortly to try another converter i have which is an 8" that has a 6000 stall that will hold around 600-700hp. These are not cheap at around $1500 each but you might be able to try one out and see what you think. They both suit the skyline spline re4r01a and made by TCE. I also have some 9 1/2" converters with mechanical diodes that will hold 1200hp but they are only suitable for the re4r03a large spline box.

Considered going to shorter diff gear ratio like a 4.375?

Esky - yes, I stall it up as much as possible without spinning, then when I get off it simple feels like it just rolls forward a little quicker lol... as if it makes boost while on the brake, but as soon as I get off I get the feeling it loses it all and Im starting from scratch.

Datsqik - wouldnt something that large be a pig to drive on the street? It would be awesome to try out though if not. Unfortunately, I would like to keep it as street friendly as possible.

Infamous - Brand new diff with gears so have not thought about that. It revs pretty hard as it is.
