I need some suggestions. I have tried the smash a socket over it with no success apart from partially destroying the lock nut. anyone else got some crazy ideas of how to get them off?

cheers

Did you heat the socket first?

deep impact sockets at SCA ~$30-$40, u bash em in with a hammer and then remove :P

What does the lock nut look like?
The smash a socket over it method worked on my old cheapo lock nut set, and I found there is a definite technique to get it to work.

must be using a socket too big then perhaps or one with too many points

I suggest going to supercheap and going through their 50 cent socket box and getting some imperial sizes.. at least they are soft sockets and you can hammer the crap out of them.

Yeah needs to be a cheap shit socket that will stretch, slightly smaller then the locknut obviously..

i've had to do this a few times due to my stupidity. Always had a win with smashing a socket on I have a few scarifical sockets here richard if you want to have a crack with mine might help to use a rattle gun once you have them on aswell gime a shout if you want a hand.

i had a few 17mm nuts stuck on spacers.. i just hammered them on and the wiggled them off when still on the thread :) worked a treat.

went again the grain, used higher quality sockets since they would be stronger :)

Soft cheap socket is the go, Stretch it over the lock nut, turn off with a breaker bar, Rattle gun will make it slip to easy.

stumps.

air chisel gets them off. also destroys rims if you get too excited.

Is it not possible to just source a new locknut key? If you're willing to run around to find sacrificial sockets or the like, surely it'd be just as easy to hit up a tyre joint and see if you can find or even borrow a key socket to suit?

managed to get hold of a set of keys from a mate, and one of them was pretty much a perfect fit. thanks for all the suggestions. If i couldnt find a key that worked I was going to have to work through them one by one.

any of those thieving bastards reading this you are too late already got a new set on. ill try not to lose the key this time :)

Used car at work came in like this, they had then snapped the welded nut off. I spent hours drilling the fucking thing out just to get the wheel off, then smashed the stud out. Did my fucking head in.

I never keep it in the car. Probably why I keep losing them :)
