i run the vga cables ( i presume this is component) with an optical cable for audio. Works a treat.

Nah, VGA is the cable you connect your screen to your PC with, the blue ended one. Most tv's have a VGA/DMI input these days to connect a pc, this plugs into there, and the audio is just the normal left and right RCA's.
