Mate of mine has an R34 GTT that he purchased recently..
Anyway its a fairly fresh engine which has,
Forgies
HKS cams/cam gears
GT2871r
Anyway everytime you cold start it.. bushfire comes out the exhaust.. pisses so much smoke looks like somone just sat 2nd in your garage!
Now what the hell could it be!?
Once the engine is warm it goes away. Runs fine, makes good reliable power.
It obviously is chewing oil from somewere so he ran it dry unknowingly couple days ago... when he started it no smoke came out (cold start, ticking away horendesly).. as soon as i put fresh oil in she is bushfiring again..
I have no idea who built the engine as its from the east.. Can anyone share some insight
??
Valve stems? Incorrect piston sizing?

At a guess I would say pistons/rings are too loose when cold and the oil is getting into the combustion camber.
Who built it? Talk to them if its 'fresh'

Nar no idea its an eastcoast car/engine without reciepts..
Thats all i can think of it being too
Shouldnt cause any major issues in the future?

have you tried compression testing it?

not yet thats next step.. comp test it cold then warm see if any difference

The metal structure in the forged pistons is more dense than regular cast pistons. They expand a greater amount when hot compared to cast pistons which means that greater cold clearances must be machined into the sleeves than you would have on cast pistons. This means that when hot, the pistons expand and the rings seal properly but when cold, they contract and leave greater clearances than compared to hot. It is by this method that the oil gets past the rings when the engine cools and gets burned when the engine gets restarted.
Would I be right in saying that the pistons are also pretty rattly until the engine has warmed up too?
Having said all that, you can't rule out the possibility of incorrect piston size or issues with the rings. Who built the engine?
It's also less likely to be stem seals if it's not smoking when on boost when hot.

I'd say valve stem seals if it smokes on start up only or maybe turbo seals. The rattle would have been the hyd lifters when it was low on oil.

I think your right on.. the engines always been real rattly even when warm but yes when cold you notice it bit more! Def not turbo as its new but valve stems could be a possibility. Guess il just make sure to top up every week lol
What colour smoke? has it been re-built recently?, running incorrect oil after re-build like a synthetic could glaze the bore...
happened to a mate of mine, huge cloud of white smoke only on cold starts.. then would go away

i'd be taking it somewhere such at ASG for compression/leak down test, and possibly inspecting down the spark plug holes to see if it does infact have forgies, etc..
for all you know it could be a 300,000km stock RB25 time bomb with no receipts or anything.

Update on this.. he has put the wrong oil in it couple days ago and pulled over on the side of the road with smoke (bushfire) pissing out the top breather lines.. shagged turbo and yet to do a comp test wonder whats happend to it now!
