Ok so the story goes we thought the Patrol had done its turbo, however its got no compression in pot #1.
Nissan have confirmed that these first gen GU's had issues with popping pistons, they reckon its usually 3/4 that goes.
Looks like a new set of slugs is on the cards, but just curious if any other patrol owners or nissan employees know of any more issues these motors have? Would dropping a newer diesel in be the shot? Or just swap slugs and she'll be fine?
We could just end up selling it once its running again if they have chronic problems.
Any feedback would be great guys :)

the s1 and 2 gu's were notorious for the zd30 blowing up, gave them a very bad reputation
the s3 upgrade got a bigger sump i believe and a couple other small mods which have helped it, from what i've read up on the main problem is overboosting,
there are mods you can do which prevent them from going and several owners are now getting big km's from them
unfortunately while the new ones seem ok, those first batches killed their reputation forever
fix it, sell it and get a 4.2 gu, can't go wrong:)

Correct,
They had problems with getting oil up to the pistons.
They were getting too hot a blowing a hole in the combustion chamber in the piston. To rectify this the made new pistons with better oil cooling gallerys in them and better oil squirters.
They also fitted an extra oil pressure switch and a few other things.
So at the end of the day I would go for a complete short or long motor to totally eliminate the problems.
They can be bought fairly cheaply nowdays.

As above,
Easiest way ive found to find a S3 ZD30 is in the navara, they never came out with the poo version ZD30. I also found that they were overboosting, i cant remember why off the top of my head though

yer bud worked for nissan and very common... prtty costly and most people sell them off straight after... usually happen ~220kms-280 and a common theme was lack of oil changes from what i have seen/ heard..
if your keen 6.2 t/d conversionn if you plan on keeping or as above with 4.2 conversion is pretty cheap... a long engine from nissan is not cheap...

i dunno if there is a reason why putting in a Rb25 or something hasnt been mentioned? but would be an option and prob wouldnt cost you to much but in saying that i know fuk all about putting one in.
specially been diesel i suppose would be a pain in the arse.
