Guys,

After a bit of assistance in regards to buying a new TV.
I'm after a 42" or 50" LCD with atleast 2 HDMI inputs for the PS3 & FOXTEL, but am unsure on what else i should be looking at? What's the difference between say a tv with 1080 resolution & 1080p? Also, anything else i should be looking at in terms of features & what not?
Seen a 42" LCD advertised at Dick Smith with 1080 resolution for $700 which i thought was decent, but i know SFA about them so any help would be great!

Currently have a 42" Plasma with no HDMI inputs, i have FOXTEL, PS3, DVD player & surround sound running off a receiver. Need something that will run all the accessories to their full potential as the current one obviously isn't.

Cheers :D

1080p = 1080 resolution (on the vertical plane).
I'd steer clear of the real cheapo gear, spending a bit more now will pay dividends.

I have a series 6 samsung (100hz. 1080p, lots of HDMI + component + composite inputs), and it has an inbuilt media player so you can plug in USB media and play from there.
Go see Dan @ JB Carousel for a good deal and advice.

Samsung LCD > *

Pretty much the entire Samsung range from this year will do what you want, with the best quality.

Seriously invest in a decent tv and dont skimp out on the cheaper brands. I've seen so many dodgy tvs come back in that ive just sigh and though 'a couple hundred more and you wouldnt be in this mess'

LCD = 52"

LG seem to be the best BFYB - I've been doing a fair bit of browsing lately as well. Will be buying a HD Plasma though - 42" is too small & 52" is way too expensive in LCD, so Plasma ftw.

LG may be bang for your buck but they are the poo of the poo. Id rather buy a Palsonic or a Princess.

My dad doesnt like parting with cash (not a jew but close), and hence does bulk research before buying stuff. Short version, the Samsung has a great picture, but has a reflective screen so unless its in a dark room its hopeless, where the sony bravia (running a W series 5500) has a matt screen and works in normal rooms, so my vote goes to the bravia.

And deff with 1080p, if it doesnt have 1080 dont even bother

Yeah cool thanks for nothing

42 inch is too small maybe if your using it in an cinema but no normal person in a normal house in a normal room should be whinging about 42

Fark me 5 years ago we were all watching tv on our 51cm CRTs!

My brother bought a 42 inch Hisense LED the other day. I went wtf when i saw the brand, but the picture is like nothing else. No freeze framing like some of the earlier lcd's, its a real spinout.

From my browsing, it obvious that I wouldn't be 100% happy with how a 42 would fill the void of space it's going to be mounted in all nice. It's simply my opinion mate, surely not something hack worthy..

And Aids I've also heard their TV's are not of the same quality as their other stuff, but poo poo?

My response comes because

-he asked for a 42 inch screen
-he asked for a lcd

you just felt obliged to let us all know your buying a 52 inch plasma, with no other real input.

Im sure mr soogy is smart enough to know what he wants already and just wants advice on brands.

Not all Samsung have reflective screens, mine is matt...

And yes, 1080p FTW!

Mine is matte too.

The competition between Sony and Samsung panels heated up for years but over the last 24 months Sony's quality has slipped big time.

I dont think that Sony has slipped, its just Samsung have stepped up big time.

The LED stuff is brilliant.

Don't want to be rude, but nert - I pointed out that LCD's = 52" (they don't come in 50) and there's a massive price jump between the two sizes (50" HD Plasma probably cheaper than 42" HD LCD, and a 52" would usually cost more than a cheap car, hence Plasma ftw)

Also (although they're apparently poo poo) that LG's are great value, have decent rep among other appliances etc..

Apologies for answering back/OT post :)

EDIT as said +1 for LED > everything else!

My Samsung is one of the first 1080p LCD screens that came out (don't ask how much I paid, FML), and I had it since late 2006. At the time only Sony was doing 1080p screens. Did heaps of research, and next-to-eachother comparisons and they were equal in image quality then, at least from what I saw myself. Samsung won me on price and external looks. Saying Samsung was behind and has stepped up big time in relation to Sony couldn't be further from the truth :)

so much talk of 1080p, since when have most people got 1080p? or is it just by fluke that most people in here have a 1080p set? :P

most of the time you will get a 80 to 20 % ratio of; interlaced vs progressive (respectively)

So to the original poster. try and get 1080p set opposed to a 1080i.

I should have said stepped ahead if I didnt want to confuse people.

The samsung has never been bad, but the led range just blows the competition out of the water at this point in time.

i compared the sony and samsung, and to my eyes the samsung shat all over the sony.
I'd recommend Dean goes and checks out a few in person, everyone has different thoughts on what they like picture wise...

well we went into good guys to buy a cheap 50" plasma on boxing day... planned on getting a 768p or whatever LG for $1500, then spotted the samsung 50" for $1200ish...

while umming and arhing over which one looked better etc, one of the sales guys came up and said they had a special on for a Hisense 42" LCD 1080p

we had a look at that but werent really keen on the size as we wanted a 50", but when he told us the price - we had to buy it
$750 or close enough to, which was cheaper than the same sized shittiest plasma!

honestly for the price - i dont care if it shits itself after a few years, plus it came with a 3yr in home warranty, while a plasma only comes with a 1 yr warranty and you have to pay extra to extend it.
apparently they got a limited amount in and were selling them below cost, which might be true as they retail at like $1300 or so

so yeah, for a "cheapie" it looks and works ok

My mums had a Hisense 42" LCD for 2 years or so, shits over her and my brothers LG Plasma's, my Brother has a 60" LG Plasma, its a heap of shit.I prefer watching the 42" Samsung in the other room.

Ive got a Samsung series 5 and dont look back, the price and looks give it a big advantage over the Sony equivalent. When you buy a Sony you are paying for the label...

Just went out and had a look at the LED 200Hz Samsungs LCDs, omg do they look awesome! SO much brighter and crisp, def upgrade coming in the future!

I wouldn't say you're paying for the name.

My Sony Bravia X-Series is pretty fuckin awesome, and the price I got it for 18 months ago.. it was comparable to the Samsung.

All comes down to how you set it up... DTV forums have plenty of setups you can try. The picture on my Sony is a shit-ton better than how it was on the factory settings just from making a few tweaks.

P.S. I've been told and I also read that Samsung and Sony share the exact same LCD panel.. it comes down to the differences in their electronics.

if it were me buying i think that a 46" samsung 1080p lcd is the way to go.

just looked at the jb site (http://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-lcd-led-plasma/hd-tv-1080/) and the comparable sony is $500 cheaper, so to be honest that is probably the best buy.

Oh, and if you buy it now you get a 26" LCD thrown in for free. Go and see Stuart at Kambos.

Sony use Samsung made panels for 99% of their TVs, after Sony sales slipped so much that they started a joint venture.

We paid $3600. That was the best price we've seen so far. Kambos are in Malaga. They're like Rick Hart only better and cheaper.

There's a Kambos in Canning Vale as well, if you're SOR. Check white pages.
