Experiences in bali - Chicken Fighting (tajen)

Went to bali with a friend of mine and stayed with his mum... A few of her indonesian staff really get into the chicken fighting or Tajen (tai-jin). I've tagged along a few times on a few different trips, but this time we were going to the big stadium so i took along my camera!

The roosters come from different places, some originate from the states, some from the phillipines... The best ones are a phillipino/us crossbreed, theres alot of knowledge around breeding them, training them and building them up. Most are on steroids and some dudes feed them ephidrine before matches to get them going... All are hooked up with a fairly lethal blade before fighting.

Its a crazy experience, what at first seems like disorganized chaos, starts to look like it has some sort of method to it. With the use of a few hand signals and by yelling certain words (in the first video, its sala sala sala) they decide on the odds of the match, which chicken each party wants to back, and how much their putting on it... At the end, the loser will roll up his cash and throw it or pass it down the chain to the winner... at least 1500 balinese dudes yelling and waving creates quite the racket!

The winner takes the losers chicken, turns it into soup so the death isnt wasted, and on average most punters are rolling between 50k and 150k per fight - 5-15 bucks or so...

the police regularly break these up, i have been to one, only to find out it was going to be raided so we bailed... Sure enough heard that later on a troop carrier had turned up with army dudes and arressted a whole heap of guys... one of the organizers ended up in jail for 3 months!
