hey guys,

Im thinking of having a bit of a fence built - out of either limestone or limestone looking stuff.

Wandering if anyone has any experience in this? what rough costs would I need to consider to have something built, thinking of getting the material myself but actual construction costs etc?

Im thinking main section up to 1.2-1.3m and the pillars up to 1.8 maybe with wooden things between.

Thanks in advance

Mike

Not sure about the limestone part but if you want powder coated aluminium infill or polished stainless give me a buzz - Josh - 0408 008 537

Factor in digging a bit of a trench for a decent footing as well - so you'll need a concreter. Do you want to have pretty lights on there also? You'll need power for that so possibly a lekky. SSICK could do that bit for you.

how many lineal metres long is your fence going to be? how many peirs and what distance between peirs. Reconstituted limestone or natural? what size and thickness blocks you want for the infill?

I lay limestone/bricks for a living so can work you out a rough price if you want an idea of what its going to cost?

Might need to get council approval as well
Recon blocks are usually cheaper however they weigh more

some councils will require it to be engineered over 900mm high. contact me if you need an engineer. can sort that out cheap for AL.com

Thats only for retaining...I think he just wants a boundary fence around his front yard.

You'll still need to put in a planning approval application I would think. Save you making a boundary fence too close to the road, on neighbours property etc.

Keep in mind if you choose not to and plan to sell the house in future you'll need to sell the house stating that the fence/wall is not council approved - this might deter potential buyers.

i'll be putting it through the council for sure... if I didn't i'd have to take it down at time of sale or if the council knew I didn't make it to specs... i wouldn't wanna risk it.

i bought my house without a council approved patio - it was just a condition of sale.

*edit* as in, bought a house with a patio, but patio was not council approved. not sure if that sentence makes sense to anyone else.

same, existing patio wasn't on the plans. it was only when i went in to submit my form and plans for the garage, they pulled up a photo of the house *google/nearmap* and asked what it was - but i said - was there when i bought the house and the guy just shaded it in and wrote "existing".

parents just finished building something very similar to what you describe with genuine limestone. I believe 4 large pallets of limestone blocks cost them about a grand delivered. They then got some custom made limestone strimmings made to cap the top of the wall which i think cost another grand. An then labour cost another grand i think :) so all up 2.5-3 k for a pretty nice looking fence.

cool :) thanks for that - gives me an idea at least. Did they get a solid fence or with pillars etc? what are they going to use as the bits between the posts if thats the case?

Its just a solid limestone wall, about 1.2-1.3 metres tall with 4 taller limestone posts at either end and at the gateway.

You're looking at $20 - $25 per block supplied & layed from past experience. $30 per block for footing, $60 per linear metre for bullnosing & around $75 for each pier capping. What's the rough length you're thinking of doing?
Steer clear of wooden inserts imo as they need lots of maintenance to keep them looking nice. Go with powdercoated steel gate type style or solid limestone wall with piers imo.

Are you after natural or recon blocks ??

Turbo4L - cheers mate. I've got to do some more detailed measurements - figure out if I want a small gate to walk in as well as a drive gate..

Red3vil - ether or to be honest. Recon blocks still look good and probably cost much less than the real stuff?

Natural blocks with split face look much better imo, but you pay for them.
Can you scan a block plan onto your pc & link us to it? Know a few limestone guys & may be able to hook you up :D

Good call, mate of mine just did a terraced front yard with meter blocks and piers to put rails between, all up was about 10k but if it was just the boundary wall would have been about the 3k mark I think, alot of the cost is in the footing and dirt removal.

When we did mine (3 level backyard) we just asked the guys where the dirt needed to be and got a dingo (and a carton) and moved it all for them. So when they came in all we payed for was laying the blocks.

Make sure you get 2 prices for your blocks, backing blocks (if it needs them) and face blocks.

Cost will also differ depending on whether you go with meter blocks or 500's. Hope any of my babbling helps :)
