View Full Version : Clutch install on a R154

So basically, I've never done this on any car before, and I basically have little to no idea what I'm doing. So it's up to you lot to help fill in the blanks!
From what I understand the basic process is:
Drop driveshaft via....[insert area here] then I undo the bell housing bolts (or possibly the inspection plates? Which are supposedly located on either side of the box) and ensure I have a trolley jack underneath so It doesn't crush me. Roll gearbox back enough, then I pull off the clutch, take the flywheel to get machined, come back, put them both back in, torque up the various fittings then dardy party?
or am I just in waaaaaaaay over my head?
feel free to flame me.

Your over your head
But... if you want to learn... have a go
But have someone with you that knows what they are doing

I have seen your arms. You wouldn't have the strength to undo the bolts :D

Found a fairly comprehensive guide here.
Man, I'll fight you Jared.

r154 uses a pull type clutch.... pretty sure the clutch needs to be undone via inspection holes before the gear box can come off.... so i reakon its abit hardr than the usual clutch change

As Orange33 has said you'll need to undo the clutch bolts before removing the gearbox. Clutch will then come out with the gearbox.

you need to drop your oil too terry otherwise you will leak it out on your drive way when its tilted and it takes a bit of weight out of it...
will do it for ya if im free monday for 350

Gearbox is never easy to do on your own...
You need someone to help. I've done most of my shit on my own but have bulk tools and equipment to help.
Do it yourself - its worth it but everything shuold move failry easily. Check you have all bolts undone ect... Make sure the last bolt you undo is the easiest to reach. Have a jack under the car or take your centre console out and run a chain and engine hoist through the tunnel hole (works epic for 4wds)
You gota becareful you don't crush yourself. Putting it back in is the hard part. So I assume you are doing it under your car on stands? make sure you dont drop the box off your jack - or put wood under it. Trying to lift a heavy box on your own under a car to get the jack under is gay.
+ When you have it all lined up and are trying to get the box in but for some reason it wont go in put the box in neutral and spin the rear of the box where the prop shaft goes in and it should help line up the inner front shaft.
Get someone to help. That critical moment when you're holding the thing up losing strength trying to line it up and get a bolt in, while not crushing yourself. Is always easier when you have a mate drinking your beer and abusing you.
Good Luck

My technique usually consists of:
Drive to Allstar
Drive home (play playstation)
Drive back to Allstar (pay money)
Drive home
Never had the courage to give a clutch change a go. But will probably try it next time with the help of someone who actually knows what they're doing. Let me know how you go.

whatever you do, keep a good grip on the flywheel when pulling it off

Dude if you get as much info as you can and have some help its easy as piss,I was never taught anything officially, most of it was self taught through trial and error,Now I work on mining machinery as a job and have worked on cars for years..Have a go,worst case scenario you get it towed to a workshop and they finish it for you.

Is there any particular method to checking if it's engaging/disengaging properly while the car is still elevated?

Gears will crunch, clutch will slip if it isnt.

not sure what car you got - but i rekon its alot easier to just pull the motor and box out in go...
saying that, my engine bays alot more basic then most since i no longer have aircon/ps etc etc.

legnum is about 3 times harder than anything in this thread... :D
thats a nice effort beatle!
worst i've done is sliced my thumb open on the machined face of my legnum box as the input shaft came out of the torque converter and dropped.

I think he meant pulling the flywheel off... for machining
And make sure you mark its location with a paint pen as to where it was re bolt holes
Makes it easier to put it back later
Especially on cars with non symetrical bolt patterns

Why did you have your head under it anyway ?
Fuck doing that shit without a hoist!!
I had guy complain about labour to R n R patrol box , his mate was charging a carton of Jacks to do it on ground

I did a patrol on the ground 2 weekends ago for a bottle of jacks.. havent seen the bottle yet!!! FUCKING FAG!
Engine Crane / chain through centre console... Car doesnt need to be jacked up so its super safe / less shit to worry about. Can sit underneath and line up clutch ect - lots of room to work.
Just make sure you pressure clean as dry mud falling into your eyes every 3 seconds is not really fun.
To be honest because we used the crane and big jack on the back - it was relatively easy. 8 hours in - and out. + Bulk drinking. and Pizza break :-)

Please use new flywheel bolts.
Can try using a big bit of wood/board under the box with two jacks if balancing on one is an issue.
