Ok,
So I've got my first formal job interview likely to happen in the next week or so.
Basically, I've got no idea how to approach this, so I need some guidance.
It's for a Town Planning firm doing CAD and Graphics work, basically I plan on going back to uni next year doing a Masters in Planning/Urban Design so the idea is to be able to weasel my way back in once I've finished my degree.
I have no office work experience.
I have plenty of retail/client experience.
I am not particularly strong in either CAD nor Graphics, however I do know both to an acceptable degree (Safe to assume all Graphics guys aren't taught Microstation/Solidworks/Archicad Etc - I'd assume CAD guys are the reverse, but may have had work done on PS)
What kind of questions am I likely to be asked?
What's the best way to discuss pay? If so is it easy to bargain my way into higher pay amounts? Or safer to just settle and try later one when I know the office a bit better and thus my chances to negotiate.
Of course there's the obvious stuff, dress well, act professional, be on time etc.
Thanks in advance,
Lui Kang.
go in demand what you want! make threats! swear! sturn looks with long periods of silence and chuck in a mexican accent for good measure! if there is a female in the interview make sure to look down on her and make sexist remarks! call her DARLIN
make sure you have a little background knowledge on the company, history ect youll be fine dont stress/freak out interviews are usually pretty fuck all and relaxed

Eye contact is a small but very important detail!!
When answering questions, don't look at the ground or around the room.

Take in a bottle of scotch, and offer the interviewer a glass. Getting them good and pissed will show the company that you are a team player and you will definitely get the job.

think before you speak and ask them if you have answered the question satisfactorily afterwards
i wouldn't discuss pay as your just kicking off...take what you can get and be thankfull they are giving you the oppourtunity to work for them and not collect dole...if you work out well for them, then discuss more pay or find something else there after

Always look directly at the interviewer and keep eye contact when you are talking. Looking at the ground/around the place gives off an impression of you not knowing what you are talking about. Keeping contact shows you have certainty.
Also, don't stress. Interviews aren't really anything special. Be yourself, don't turn all "so serious with a dick up the arse" and be stiff as wood - being yourself gives off some warmth and energy. Unless you are planning to be a stone cold assassin, then no point being a statue in the interview.
I wouldn't be negotiating pay unless you have experience behind you to back up your claims. :)

1. Research, know every aspect of the company.
2. Be passionate about the career opportunity.
3. Get a better haircut, spikey hair is uber gay.
4. Don't ask about money, they will ask how much you are expecting if they like you, byt this stage you would already know how much the role is worth since you researched. Drop your answer by a few grand.
5. Stay calm and collected.
6. Why the fuck are you going for this role if you know you aren't good at either aspect?

went and did one yesterday arvo for a oil and gas company.
*touch wood* this one comes through and i get this job so i can get out of this miserable place!
1) relax...its hard but if you relax you think easier and come across better
2) confidence! be confident in your skills and focus on them
3) be honest. if you are not sure or dont know a skill or a question say so and if its a question ask them to explain it to you
4) eye contact. if there are more than one person in the room share eye contact with both rather than just one
5) never bring up salary ever in the interview. if they bring it up then sure, if not and you get a offer you will see the pay.
6) know information about the company but you dont have to study and no more about the company that they do. even ask a question about the company to show some interest
i dont agree with NOTAGOLF on the part of asking them if you have answered there questions satisfactory. i personally think thats a no no
apart from that good luck :)

when interveiwing people i never feel good with someone who puts down his past employers or past experiences working for others, also if pay is your motivation most people will put you at the bottom of the list, so if you have any questions to ask. make sure how much you will be paid isnt one of them

tell them you hate working in a team because you have a bad temper and you get agressive if things dont go your way

Half hiding a revolver in your jacket pocket emphasizes this technique, as does rolling in soil and blood before the interview. It also makes anyone else sitting in the waiting room awaiting the interview nervous, and can give you the edge over them. Make sure to have a large cigar lit the whole time. Employers love cigars.

Not sure in that industry but in engineering for vac and grad jobs the type of questions they ask is always the same.
What do you know about the company?
Why do you want to work for this company?
Why did you choose this area of work?
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses (don't say something like ohh im pretty lazy at times etc). Say something like public speaking but then just say a sentence or two about how your improving (practice etc). This shows them you know you have a weakness but that you are actively trying to improve it. It's also not a major flaw..
They always ask questions where you have to give a real life example such as:
Tell me about a time you had conflicting deadlines and how did you prioritise them?
Tell me about a time you took an unpopular stance against the majority and how did you deal with it?
Tell me about a time you were asked to do something unsafe and what did you do?
Give me an example where you've shown leadership and initiative
They may also explore ur CV a bit. So these aren't set questions but if say you put something down like you race motorbikes or something they may just casually ask a question regarding that but thats more an icebreaker.
Also some companies will ask your opinion on a common knowledge event. (some mates got asked what they think abt whats happening in the gulf of mexico atm by oil and gas companies). So if you have some knowledge about the general significant events in that area (if there have been any) then it usually helps.
Also its good to have a few questions of your own to ask even if their simple but definitely not a good idea to bargain about pay at that point. You haven't got an offer yet so theres nothing to talk about. And you will find out the salary when they give you an offer.
Key things to remember:
Confidence
Take a few seconds to think about the question
Be concise and get to the point
Generally you can follow a structure to answer questions, especially where you have to give an example that has happened to you.
STAR
Situation
Target
Action
Result
Best to have a few of those examples in your head so you can come up with them straight away. And i like to prepare for questions, so have some answers in your head and do some practise in front of the mirror or something. It's an art to do it well and im far from perfect at it lol but if you get a few interviews you'll find it gets easier. Hope that helped and good luck mate

from my experience (study Regional and urban planning at curtin), employees generally ask you about team work... but since your not going for a planning position it might be different.
