Hey all

With all this cold weather the pre-warm engine ticking is driving me nuts. I think my car might benefit from a slightly heavier oil.

I am currently using a Castrol oil but cannot remember off the top of my head the weight - 10/40 seems to be ringing a bell. It's in a gold bottle.

It's a Hypersport RVR with the evo3 gear so a 4G63 engine, currently at 88000kms. Any advice appreciated :)

yeah that used to be annoying as hell with my old evo 6.
i think its a lighter oil you need - either way the best fix for it is an upgraded set of lifters.

Lighter or heavier? I'd of thought a thicker oil would help it better?

my limited understanding is thicker oil will make it worse - thats why the oil you have in there during summer causes issues in winter because its thicker when cold.
the best solution tho is to uprgade the lifters - cams dont need to come out to do this which is good.

you want a lighter oil in winter, especially with the ticking lifters
my legnum did the same thing, ran some thinner oil and the ticking disappeared from start up.

there might even be a 'bleeding' procedure for them, there was in the mitsubishi manual for my 6A13TT.

if you want to cure that ticking get some aftermarket lifters with larger oil feeds

they will set you back around $200

motul 300v chrono is a highly recommend oil for the 4g63 but its pretty expensive

lol Joe wtf.

Garage R in Singapore stocks HKS oil designed for every Jap engine you can think of.. RB, EJ, 13B, 4G63, etc.. I'm sure it would work quite well, but its not cheap!!!

You can take your lifters out, bleed them on the bench and refit.

Or run a 5/40 or something like that

dont even need aftermarket ones, as there are actualy revised ones with larger oil holes.

you may even have some success in just cleaning your lifters.

i have taking mine out and left them in some carby clean and that helped.

but for $200 you may as well replace them

Thanks for the link, to4garret.

What sort of timeframe would I expect a reasonable mech to swap in new lifters?

easily under a day, all they need to do is take the rocker cover off, pry the roller off, swap the lifter, put roller back in, repeat 16 times.

4-6 hours max unless they're retarded.

Went to the garage to check, I've been running Castrol Edge 5W/30 - that's fairly lightweight yeah?

I would assume if it's ticking using that oil, the lifter replacement would be the appropriate direction to travel in?

i've always just run Castrol GTX3, nothing flash, both of my 63's (VR4 and RVR) have 160,000kms and dont tick. but i have done the carby clean trick on both of them.

Just ignore it, it will go forever like that.

Cleaning them works, but the noise will come back, especially if you don't change the oil regularly. Or just get the revised lifters.

Motul 300V Chrono 10w40, should at least reduce noise.

Buy through AutoPro Innaloo for better price!
