View Full Version : Lol, A volvo got done for speeding
I know I know, suck it up butter cup.
I got my first traffic offence in over 5 years - a cheap speeding fine.
Roe Hwy near Willeri Drv broad daylight.
I was caught allegedly doing 108km in a 100 zone.
Not to mention I also have a radar detector.
But heres the catch. I saw the radar hiding in the bushes and looked at my speedo and noticed im doing right on 100 and go through. The detector didn't go off. I was doing the same speed as every other car in my lane - no flashes.
Now I also have 18" Volvo rims [up from 16"] and correct tires using the 'plus sizing' method.
Am I wasting my time trying to defend this?
p.s. Im not complaining about anything at all, I just want some opinions here.

If you believe you have grounds for it, then write in expressing that you wish to have the photograph reviewed. Don't mention that you have a detector, lol, but it could be that the operator had set the camera up incorrectly.
I would imagine it's just a $75 fine, and dragging it before the court would cost a lot more. But if the camera was set up on the piss, you may not be the only one with that fine.

what is the "plus sizing" method?
Rim size goes up, Tyre height goes down. Rolling diameter stays the same

not always... there is not a match for every diametre in each size...
going from 16's to 18's on my last car, i could either get a tyre 5% smaller, or 4% larger than the factory ones... which at 100km/h is 4km/h, enough to set off a multinova.

Talking tyres or bitches ?
I used this reference site to chose my setup.
http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit
Stock: 16" 215 65 16
Current: 18" 245 45 18
Actual Speed: 100 km/h - Speedometer1: 101. km/h
Speedometer Difference: 1.207% too fast
Diameter Difference: 1.19%
This is the closest I can go to the stock 16" XC set up.
It was one of the new multinovas.

Hoping this wasn't today. Was on Roe highway a fair bit today.
Saying that, anyone else been on it today? Notice a weird microphone looking thing on the side of the road when heading towards South St? WTF is it for? Looked like a microphone that people sing into.

Chuck a GPS in your car and see how much your speedo is out.

there was mention of noise cameras to catch cars putting out illegal noise emissions a while ago...
As for the OP, I always drop 5k's below the limit just in case

I wan under the impression that if the speedo was ever out, that it was only possible to show a higher reading eg 90 when your actually doing 87, rather then showing 90 and actually doing a higher amount?

From factory yes, but not after a modification such as changing the rolling diameter of your wheels.
Chuck a GPS in your car and see how much your speedo is out.
I have actually done that mate and its accurate - but with the previous 16" wheels. I will test it again this weekend.
Im driving to the Pinnacles this sunday for a weekender + photoshoot. Im expecting PLENTY of boys in blue along the new Coast drive so I really need to make sure the speedo is correct!

correct me if i am wrong, but that looks like one of the new speed cameras. if so, they dont always flash. it may have got you on an infra red flash and you would have remained clueless. also not all radar detectors can get these cameras due to something with the bandwidth and always changing or something. cant remember exactly...

Drive past with passenger hanging out of car and swipe at it with baseball bat. "Got him, YES!"

Grab a couple of old microwaves from kerbside pickup, fab up some shielding and make your own EMP/HERF gun to fry the cameras.
