I bought it off Cam yeah.

When I got it off him, it had different ratio's front to rear, so have changed both to match and put the front locker in.
Engine is noisy in the valvetrain, so will re-shim the suspect valve when I have time, and a couple of other rattles I want to chase down. Have a speedo corrector box for the speedo to fit, and the exhaust needs to be quietened down. Other than all that, all the really hard work has been done for me.

The guy who was also involved in the conversion works for Wetrac, but can't remember his name.

if so are you on crack ?
40k is not a small ammount of money and im pretty sure you could buy a damn nice, modded to shit later model patrol, landie, jeep etc..that would have no rust, mods wouldnt be old. be clean as fuk inside and would still drive and run like a new car.

lol, you've never driven a zook have you? Yes, a freshened up zook with a new school 1.3 will certainly be better off road. In fact, a rusted out old shitter zook without a sump plug would be better off road than a new ford ranger.

even if the zook was good offroad which i dont think it would be that great with the longer body.
Youd honestly go offroad with a car that you just spent 40k on a chassis biuld up? highly doubt it.

i just find it halourious that someone would spend that much money or double that much money including the other one to have two prestine condition sukuzis. If it was a Rx4 or something then that would be a different story, but its not exactly a sought after car.

My old man has a D-max with that whole push button shit, I keep nagging him to buy a rodeo manual front end for it, but he likes the convenience of just rolling down the beach and driving off.
The one time I tried taking it to Two Rocks it was a pingpingpingping to get into 4H, then wouldn't go into 4L without me turning it off and on again, and then turning cruise on then off. Once it was in 4L, it wouldn't go back into 4H or 2H without the key off and on again. Would be a fun thing for it to do if you were 1000kms out of Marble Bar in the sticks.

Put a late model engine in it, modified suspension, different rims and tyres and a complete restoration, then yeah you probably would have a warm reception I would have thought.

Except there would probably be some random that would pipe up to rag on you about how you should have spent your money, because obviously he would know better than you and the workshop that helped you do it.

And as far as I'm concerned, putting in a completely new/modern engine, changing the suspension with new and upgraded components, and fitting larger offroad tyres is a performance build. And just to rant further, you really don't know what you're on about, because if you're going bush, the last thing you want on the car is giant rock crawling tyres. Try going through the Kimberly with 37's and you'll be changing four shredded tyres real fast.

So VH with an ecotech, king springs, some 18s, slotted rotors..siiiiick..
fuuk all i said was i dont think that it would be BETTER to own then 40k worth of new 4x4. Thats all...i couldnt care about going bush, beach, rock crawling.. etc etc etc.

im not making a big deal over nothing.. im just explaining why i dont agree. and not sheeping like the usual.

You think 40k is heaps overall?

Just had 10k worth of axles and atlas transfer case come into work for a zook.
This thing is going to have 47" tyres and Rockwell diffs :). The axle diameter is very close to the same diameter as a coke can just to put it into perspective.
The transfer is a 2speed with capability of rear driveshaft disconnect. Big dollars.

yeh 40k on a car is abit..

when your talking about people who can spend 10k on axles, then they might not be alot to them obviouslly, but doesnt change the fact 40k is abit if dosh.

lol wow.. this thread got interesting!

Dont worry Drift_R32.. He's already taken it off road, he built it for a trip with some of his friends to drive through the guts of Australia for a charity run for kids, its going to get a decent workout thats for sure..

If you can justify the money then who gives a shit what other people think, you are building a car for you, not for someone else.

For 40K you're getting alot of car for your money really, sure its not a brand new production car but you're talking about a restoration, you cant compare restoration costs to what a new car is worth when its made in a factory. If you want a certain result then you spend what you can afford.

A Jimny injection setup in a sierra is going to cost you 6500k straight up with new hoses, rad, hd clutch, installed and wired in with everything required supplied by us. So you're talking a reco motor + injection gear. No sierra came out with power steering, this one has it and its neatly done, so once you're allowing for steering box, lines, hoses, pump ect from a Jimny PLUS mating it into a different car you're now talking about modification work too, then he wanted aircon as well so we are up to about 10K already. Now allow for Reco diffs, gearbox, transfer, new brake setup, all new suspension components, new bumpers, taillights, headlights, interior trim and seats, rims and tyres + the labour to R&R.. Then there is Soda blasting the body, dent removal, rust removal (had to replace part of the rear floor pan), then paint and assembly. Then he dropped 10K of accessories on it.. duel battery, air locker, ARB bar and lightforce spottys, tyre pressure monitoring system, new maruti cab.. 40K does not take long to reach

what gives me the shits when a cowboy turns round and bitches about the cost of getting a job done properly and they take the cheap way out and say something stupid like "im going to be a hektic pingpingping and put in a motor where power is only made up high in the rev range so I can stick it in low range and have the thing bouncing off rocks when I am trying to crawl over something slow, then have their foot to the floor and then have a sad when they start breaking shit or flopping their car on its side from driving like a tard because they cant make torque any other way"

You dont need bulk power for a 4x4, you want to have control over the car in low range and be able to crawl over things with torque down low.. Anything that requires high RPM and you're just going to wear your clutch and tyres out and you wont have any control.

I challenge you to spend 40K on a Rollux or Patrol with the same parts replaced with labour and see what you get

/rant

shit sunbear thats nuts! Why would you want to disconnect the rear tailshaft?

My opinion is still that of disagreeance with Mad Aussie saying you could it is better then any new 40k 4x4. Im not saying he should have done this and he should have done that. To ME it was alot of money to spend on car that ended as it did thats all.

alot of guys with luxs are still using leafs like me with the right setup you can go along way alot of people underestimate leafs
then there is coils wich are usualy with a 3 link front
then ya get ya 4 links and triangulated 4 links with coils or air shocks or coilovers or hydrualics
the real nuts ones ya see at tuff truck are usually linky with adjustable jydro shocks for hieght adjustment ive heard of some comp rigs having 100k dropped on them

not a bad price, he was quoted 30k from toyota for a brand new 1hdfte lol
almost impossible to find second hand
i think he has the atmo diesel atm so the 1hdft might be an easier conversion
cheers

For 28k you can drop a Chev 6.5L turbo from brunswick diesels in! If he has the coin...

Im in the lower bracket, every one ive driven or worked on has been a bucket of shit that didnt perform anywhere near as well as i expected it to.

Seen much better results out of a well matched turbo, tune and exhuast setup.

Being so close to Brunswick, Bunno has more than its fair share of to conversions running around in patrols and cruisers...

My observation has been that the cars that are running the Chevs appear to used for towing, or look like they've just had a bucket of cash thrown at them (ie all the biggest, most advertised brands' gear, 35 inch rubber, 15 spotties, shopping lists in the rear window, etc), and dont appear to have been used off road very much (very clean, very straight, clean chassis).

I personally havent heard many good things about them, onlythat for the money, you would be better off converting an older cruiser to run a newer turbo deisel, or upgrading your patrol to a 4.8TD...

However, the sound of a 6.5L chev deisel is horn...

Passage GT

I was under the impression that it's not very capable... Either way, in stock form those are ugly as!

stout250
23-11-2010, 09:08 AM
New FJ's are IFS, and looks like australia will be getting the petrol/auto version. Is basically a re-bodied prado. So best suited to touring...

the yanks aren't interested in a diesel option, so looks like we miss out too.

Upside is a HUGE aftermarket scene in the states... not to mention that a few of these have been converted to Solid front ends, and have become pretty capable.

Mad_Aussie
23-11-2010, 09:15 AM
Fair enough, will be interesting to see them in the flesh. Any details on pricing at all?

stout250
23-11-2010, 09:29 AM
Last i heard, around the $70k mark... In the states they are alot cheaper, but australians will pay more... I personally am not a fan, and that price doesn't help...

Toyota had a disaster in the eighties when they sold Bunderas and SWB 70 series landcruisers along side full size troopies, but the prices were almost identical... people didnt want to spend the same cash for half the car... think it might happen again, after the novelty wears off...

long range tanks (gonna be ripped straight out)
2" exhaust, recon carby. 100,000k's on the clock, expensive looking custom bullbar, spotties, moulded flairs (prob coming off) sidesteps (def coming off)
proper lada sport alloys... $800

will rip the flares off if i change the rims, current ones are for the car so they sit flush with the guard not the flare and look a bit silly

drives well and everything works how it should so pretty happy...oh and it hasnt caught fire which is HUGE bonus if im honest
