Also, don't forget that some of these people are genuinely seeking asylum, which is perfectly legal under international law. pingpingpingpings get on the 'illegal immigrant' bandwagon real quick, when in reality these people have a legitimate reason for coming here (albeit via an illegal channel, but how are they to know that?) and the government needs to pull its finger out and process their applications faster.

This is definitely true, however one account from a coworker at the hospital I was at was pretty tragic, he tried to come across with his family, but they pretty much stuffed them into a sea container and didn't know wtf was going on until they were at an Indo shipping yard being put onto a boat at gunpoint, his folks died on the trip in the container and he had to sit with them for days until the crate was opened.

The problem is the generalization of these people. What needs to be done is for the government to employ another thousand Aussies and set up better processing centers. Deal with them faster. The way the world is deteriorating, there is only going to be more of these people, not less, and there is no way it's going to ever stop.

That asside, sending them home is a good idea in the sense of not having the government supporting too many ppl at one time. (Trust me I'm on centrelink benefits and it's easy to see that the system can't cope with our own natives and out of work citizens as it is.

Sending them home in a sense makes it there problem again however. Giving them the tools they need to "fix" there lives is one things, giving them the ability to sucessfully use them is another thing. And lets be honest, Gillard isn't going to set foot in an under-developped country.... know this my friends, so how can the government accurately plan for such events.

I believe that Indigenous people of australia need far more attention than asylum seekers do. We've been trying to asimilate them into our culture since the earky 80s but still we carry such negative views about them, and anybody will agree with you when you say that far to many of them are not being industry trained, nor are being made fully aware of the ways and laws of society. I think you're totally missing the point man.
Sure, there are lots of things here in Australia that could be improved, but we still have what's pretty much the best quality of life out of anywhere in the world here. It isn't really that bad.

And it's not like we're taking on half a country, we get what, 5,000-10,000 asylum seekers annually? If that? That's less than 3% (or something) of asylum seekers globally. Places like the US receive over 15%, which is huge in comparison. It's a fucking hard thing to do to escape to Australia, and the few that do make it here are a very very small number.

Compared to the money we currently spend on illegal immigrants/ asylum seekers, it's a fart in the breeze compared to what currently goes into health care, building, etc etc. Sure, its up in the tens of millions of dollars, but overall it isn't that much. More money is spent on keeping people on light pot charges or unpaid court fines behind bars than is spent on keeping asylum seekers locked up.

Everyone here that's against the issue have exactly the Today Tonight attitude towards these people that the previous government was spinning. Complaining that its a giant problem and it's affecting the very heart of the nation.

Guess what? It isn't. It really is fuck all.

And many of these people only know about Australia as a safe place to come to by word of mouth. They aren't picking and choosing, they are given the option of giving someone their life savings to take their family to safety, or be killed at home. Some other countries they *could* escape to are generally worse than where they came from. Libya for instance executed over 300 immigrants in one go last year, fucking atrocious stuff.
