Ok since there is about about 99 Guys on here who dj or do something to do with playing music, im looking at you guys for some help!

Just needing some idea on what to look at in the way of self powered speakers. Just enough to do small house parties as what i was using was abit under powered and finally shat itself.

I was looking at only spending about $700 bucks.
Have had alot of people say just use a good 5.1 Surround sound but personally i think it looks like shit, take up too much room etc.

Would active monitors even be enough?
Any advice would really help me out!

Cheers guys.

Steve

JB Hifi do a an Audioline powered speaker that's around $700ish.
12" woofer, built in amp, level adjustments, and the ability to attach some tripod stands to them.
I've got a pair and they're pretty decent for cheap stuff.
There's a 15" woofer version as well, but they're bloody BIG!
Otherwise Mackie do some pretty awesome speakers, but you'll only find them 2nd hand at around $700.
Have a look in Kosmic...

Im not trying to be povo. But alot of people are saying one decent powered speaker is enough? I really find this hard to believe.

Might have to just bite the bullet and spend abit!

Not sure what your after but these work well for me, plenty of bass and sound. I did get them alot cheaper than retail though. I think trade price is $330 though.

with only a $700 budget you would need to get some second hand pair of speakers.

Mackie/Tapco Thump TH-15As go for around that much a pair second hand. People also flog of the older JBL EON series for that much.

One speaker will not suit your needs.

The audioline PA range from jbhifi are cheap, but you can tell. They sound shit and run ridiculously hot which indicates they will probably die quicker (still guessing they will last about 5 years with light use/annually maintained and serviced)

... ^^and ebay are all you can really troll untill you find some. If you need some soon and can't wait then the audioline ones will be sufficient, louder than monitors and more practical than a home system(5.1 etc)

Just don't expect great sound and don't be surprised if they randomly die.

You can get Mackie/Tapco Thumps for around $1200 a pair.

People swear by them, they are a bit muddily when at low volume but they sound good when nice and loud. Also being 15" the lows are sufficient when not using a sub. They too get a bit hot but only when over driving them.

If you got a good deal (like the ones at Billy Hyde last time I was there) a set of HS50's would be pretty banging. I will be purchasing a set like this soon!

Talk to Trilby there, he'll tell you more about monitors than you could possibly dream to imagine.

My Audiolines don't run hot at all, and don't sound shit.
If you have a brain, you can tune them so that they sound good.
Tuning is only as good as the rest of your equipment, and the quality of your recording though.
I've got a pair of Mackies as well, and the Audiolines sound almost as good.
They were less than $600, and for piece of mind, get a little bit of extra warranty.
Otherwise, as I said before, get some 2nd hand ones...

That's good for you. I'm going off personal experience with the 15inch version and they are getting a bit on (2/3 years use). They will sound good to the average punter but put them next to some kv2s (for example) and yes; they do sound shit.

rucker_; if you know someone a jb hifi you can get the 15inch audiolines for very cheap.
