Have they fucked up there? Sounds almost exactly like another incident where the 19yr old took the old guys glasses and the old guy was acting in self defense?

Should have his nuts removed with a rusty hacksaw
The irony, would of expected age of glasser to be other way around. I like to drink from glasses, but the way things are going a move to plastic would be welcome.

Don't they paln on introducing tempered glasses soon? That should prevent most of these happening.

plastic glasses? :p
but yeah they are, they dont look like shitty plastic.
Seen what a stubby can do first hand, used to have a mate who's party got crashed. Put his hand up in defence and gashed his hand so bad he had to get rushed to hospital, was lucky it just missed a artery. As it was he lost a lot of blood. Has a huge scar running across his palm now. Just to add to the 3rd degree burn scars he received as a child on his neck.

Was in court for rape yesterday. Dude was being charged for assault, after bottling someone. Ended up with a 3K fine. The magistrate said that he was lucky the bottle didn't shatter, and cause the ddue serious injuries, otherwise she would of been sending him to jail/gaol.

Yeah right.. She is all talk. 3k fine is ridiculous, based on the technicality that he couldn't swing hard enough to break the bottle.. The intent was there, that's all that counts. SLAMMER or gtfo.

$3k for intentionally glassing someone, an assault that could have very well resulted in serious injury or death?
Piss fucking weak.

start cutting off fingers for every major offence!
doesnt matter what it is. biggest deterrent EVER!
you'd be able to pick the trouble makers, and if they fuck up enough times, they wont even be able to hold a fuckin bottle.
harsh, but fair... imo.
It should be attempted murder.

Not condoning the glassing, but if that's what happened then the kid deserved at least something - not a glassing, but something.

fair call, but too many "goodie 2 shoes" whingeing that they're 'not like the real murderers'.
still yet to see any other establishments move to plastic pints, etc.
is there a rule/law being imposed, or is it just a precautionary thing atm?

Thats the reason i introduced plastic glasses at the leopold during band nights.
I have see it many times before down there, alot of our nightly drinkers were ret SAS officers and you would always get a group of young blokes come in and stir them up over a pool table.

It's not attempted murder unless you're trying to kill the person.
But yes, there should be much harsher penalties for this sort of cowardly act.

Got a case/trial number??
A fair few letter's of complaint to the DPP wouldnt go astray. This is a fucking joke. If a glassing is going to be a monetary fine (which it shouldn't) it should be well into the 5 figure region (and in a way that declaring bankruptcy will not get you out of it) due to that one little thing, INTENT to disfigure someone for life. On par with rape/attempted murder in my books.

AMEN!
make them suffer.
if you're game enough to risk fucking someone else's face/life forever, you'd soon rethink if it meant having to sell everything you own to pay for the fuck up!
5 years hard time and $50,000... MINIMUM! but hey, what does the average man have a say, against a government too pre-occupied with people doing skids in a pre-developed estate at 3am.
Government priorities are in order in W.A

But that's exactly it.
Smashing a glass in someones face has the ability to put someones life in a lot of danger... if it carried a harder and more realistic charge it might actually stiffen a few people up.

Granted, but liberal blurring of lines can open the door for all sorts of rediculous laws. With the same mindset police could charge you for attempted murder for dropping 3rd on the freeway at 3am in the morning.
Silly thing to do? Yes. Attempting to kill someone, hardly.
Rarely maximum terms are handed out for assaults, I think this should change to get the message out there.
I don't believe we should be stopping people from drinking out of beer bottles, like we have been doing for the last 100 odd years, and start using 'tempered glass'. All that does is send the message to these pieces of shit 'yeah we know people strike others in the face with a bottle so here, have these'.
There needs to be a deterrant. If legislators can introduce heavy-handed, excessive driving laws to stamp out 'antisocial hoon behaviour', perhaps they should focus their efforts on these shitheads.
I for one wont call foul if a successfully convicted 'glasser' gets 5 years without parole.

There are some weird people out there, what would make someone pick up a glass and want to do that to another person. see that model is going to be released after only doing 6 of her 12 month sentance. While poeple can do this and get fuck all punishment for it it's just gonna keep on happening. +1 for cut off fingers!

Exactly, if dropping a skid at 2am in an industrial area endangering no-one else lives but your own (when standing on a sidewalk waiting for a bus can be more dangerous) can set you up to lose your job/house/family etc through loss of licence/job/income etc. but assault carries pathetic fines of a few grand.
Like those 'original Australians' that were bashing that guy after his stabbing court case. Those pricks only got 2 grand fines, and the female (the instigator) got 100hrs comunity service. Slap another 0 on the community service along with a fine 10 times that amount along with 6 months jail is a more appropriate punishment given what doing a standstill can get you. Im all for some aspect of the hoon laws as some dumb fucks can't grasp that "right time, right place" ideology, it's just a pity that all cops dont have the common sense and decency to use their powers of discretion.
Better unsubscribe to this thread, shit's making me too angry hahaha

Not too happy with the plastic glasses at the Deen. Last Saturday ordered a drink and after consuming about 1/3 I realized the top of the glass, around where I was putting my mouth was chipped/shattered to small pieces which were still attached together. I instantly put the drink down and told one of the bar girls what happened while I was ordering my next drink. She said I would be fine because it's just plastic. I'd rather take my chances with getting glassed in the face than consume plastic.

consuming plastic > consuming glass/getting glassed.
every now and then you'll see a cracked/chipped glass as well

Not really same, mate.
When used as such, glass is known to be a potentially deadly weapon much the same as a knife or firearm. IE, if deployed against someone as a weapon, it can kill them.
Attacking someone with a deadly weapon is as good as an attempt on their life, all be it unsuccessful if they survive the attack - hence the relevance of attempted murder.
I agree with everything else you have said, but despite the potential grey areas of defining exactly what is a 'deadly weapon', I stand by what I (and plenty of others) have said above.

Do they classify the one punch stuff as attempted murder these days? No doubt hands are a deadly weapon if held by the right person..
Jizz-Lebrity
10-03-2011, 12:56 PM
And there's your grey area.
I've heard you can get 10 years under that one punch stuff, and if that's the case, there should be no issue classifying glassing as an attempted murder. Manslaughter comes to mind regarding the one punch stuff? Since generally speaking, you wouldn't expect/try to kill someone in a fist fight, and it wouldn't be your intent.
Unless you're George Foreman, glassing someone will do a hell of a lot more damage than just chipping some pingpingpingping :D

You'd have a hard time pushing 'attempted murder', and I don't think that it is a realistic charge. However...
s. 294 Criminal Code of WA has 'grievous bodily harm', and glassing falls right within the ambit of that. The punishment can be twenty years imprisonment. The power is there, but it isn't used enough. s. 297 provides for ten years maximum punishment as an alternative charge.

I don't know why people aren't getting life bans either.
That model shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a pub/nightclub for life.simple. Same as anyone else who glasses someone.
I for one hope there is plastic cups introduced at every club/bar after a certain time.
