Bought a Hilux with a turbo motor that spat a rod through the side of the block.

Came with a spare engine, apparently spare engine needs a new harmonic balancer.

Both engines are 2.8L Diesel (I think they go by the name of 3L).

I have two options...

Combine these two motors into one good motor, refit into vehicle with the turbo setup.

Or....

Swap turbo setup over to my white Hilux (including whatever engine work is necessary) as it is also a 2.8L Diesel.

Anyone know someone competent enough to carry out option 1? Any recommendations? Anyone keen to do a cashy?

If it comes out to being too costly may attempt it myself with the old man, but any info/suggestions are appreciated!

Cheers,
Paul

is the turbo kit and aftermarket one or a retro fitted Surf one?

Would have to check, I think it is a "Safari" setup but not too sure. Any specific markings I should be looking for to note between an after market setup and a Surf one?

On the turbo that is.

Any engine reconditioner or half decent mechanic could do this conversion. Get on the phone & ask for a quote would be a start...

It is a Safari Turbo setup.

@Turbo4L - I am asking for anyone who can recommend someone themselves. I don't want to go to just any half decent mechanic or engine re-conditioner. Those I have called up don't like to touch Diesel motors or are currently unavailable to take on the task. I have rung around before I figured it may be worthwhile asking on here in case someone has some useful info. :)

Won't I need internal engine changes made to my engine?

nah the kit is designed to be fitted to n/a diesel engines, it will only be running 8psi or something tame like that.
I'd fit the kit then send it to United Diesel or similar and they will dyno it and set the diesel pump timing to get it running sweet

Just leave it a n/a and live with the 3L ! They are a weak POS of an engine for a toyo diesel !

I`ve fixed a couple that have spun big ends and or thrown rods... the later or turbo engine I`m pretty sure had better rods, but it sems they all need "replacement rods" when rebuilt, even as a n/a they are easy to kill towing heavy loads or hard 4wd`n.

You could try the turbo kit but just have a spare engine ready for when they get extra rattley because the piston is tapping against the head !

just unbolt the turbo manifold and turbo, bolt it onto your car, including all the oil and water lines, and turn the screw on the back of the fuel pump up about a turnish, and she will be all sweet. mates hilux had done 240 000k's before we put the turbo kit on it, now its done 310 000k's.

Old 3L's, you wont normally be able to make one good one from two. They are getting pretty old now. To do a good job would be decent coin.

Id swap the gear over

When I had my old 2.8, I just slapped all the turbo gear on and ran 8psi. Took it to united for them to tweak the fuel pump and all was sweet.

It will still be slow though.
