GQ -
make sure front diff seals arent leaking.
Make sure there is no death wobble front the front steering around 80km +
rust, with all old 4wds check for rust. People dunk them in water, dont clean them and the thing rusts out.
obviously make sure no engine leaks, oil or coolant
Gq gearboxs are sloppy, thats to be expected. Make sure no crunching noises.
Check 4wd, do some tight corners left and right make sure no bearing / stupid noises while in 4l.
make sure u test a cold start. as the diesels will start hot without gloplug assistance. So when its cold, make sure it starts up fine, no buggard glow relays etc.
do a skid?

ive been looking into this aswell, diesel ive been told is the only way to go as the petrol are gutless and the most common place for them to rust is around the rear window seals

the petrol isn't gutless, they don't rev hard by any means but have excellent low down torque and have no problems keeping up with traffic, when i first test drove mine i was actually surprised how well it went
i've also been in 3rd low at 700rpm and it kept pulling up the sand dune until i was over the top, i kept going waiting for it to bog down and it didn't, just kept going, despite their thirst they're a great motor
i wish i had the diesel simply for the fuel economy and availiability
i'd be looking at the import safari's personally, come with full electrics, diesel and if your lucky you'll find a factory rear diff lock and a pto winch

lol petrol gutless? the diesels are like driving a tractor. surely you're just taking the piss right?
the only thing i wished i had have got a diesel for was the fuel economy

i got a rb30 GQ and was told the 30 is gutless but i was pretty suprised when i took it for a test drive you just need to rev it.
By all accounts the 4.2 diesel is a slug but u do have the option of whacking on a turbo and D-gas then they really get movin.

80 series are good cars but you pay twice the money for half the strength, generally accepted that they're a bit more powerful and comfortable...

RB30 injected lurve it, had a GU rd28t PILE OF CRAP, petrol conversion to a rb30 never looked back, cops a hammering on the limiter everytime we go out full of crew never overheats or givs up. only problem is pulled it out of a 31 and had to change all those crapy plastic elbows and joiners cause theybounce of to easy went offroad lost a afm 4x4xin and was a slow drive home :(.
also on the look out to replace my zook
Im more interested in the the tray back anything extra to look out for besides the ones already posted?
PS. coil springs or leaf springs for the tray back?
Passage GT

leaf if you carry heavy stuff, coils for everything else, coils give better ride and better off road, heaps more flex and more options when modifying.
i want to find a cheap diesel ute so i can chuck the running gear and cab onto my wagon chassis, hard to find gq coil cabs these days.
also early gq utes had leaf's up front too.

that isnt that true my old RB30 GQ i got off bart was pretty decent for the size of the car. 70 litre tank and i got around 500kms to a tank so not that bad at all
also if u change from a carby to a efi need to remember to swap sumps if its out of a 31 :P

I assume u mean if you swap the entire engine over cos if ur just bolting the EFI stuff to a carby motor there is no need for a sump change.
mine is an Rb30 with an end plan to either fit a RB25 or turbo/efi the current RB30 but i'm loving my GQ at the mo, swaybars out and took it up the powerlines last week and it pissed up everything i tried except one stupidly rutted out steep hill i was a bit over enthusiastic at.

Is there a 4.2 diesel and 4.2 turbo diesel from factory? Or are turbo ones an aftermarket set up?
mr_mike
19-05-2011, 04:56 PM
there is definetly a 4.2 petrol and Diesel and a 2.8ltr turbo diesel. I think the 4.2 diesel turbo was available in the last version of the GQ before the GU was released but i am not 100% sure.
Passage GT
19-05-2011, 06:08 PM
nah no gq's came with factory turbo diesel td42, that only came with the gu
all gq's will be aftermarket kits but they are just as reliable with a turbo on them, so long as it's tuned by someone that knows their shit.
but yeah the rd28 was a turbo diesel

yeh Travs right i was mixed up with carby and efi 4.2's. as the early ones were carby then EFI thats what i was thinkin about.

there is a factory 4.2 turbo desiel but not very common, but you get much better results out of an after market turbo set-up.

wasnt the import Safari a 4.2ltr turbo diesel?
Passage GT
20-05-2011, 10:15 PM
i've never seen a factory td safari
if i could be bothered i'd look it up but i'm pretty damn sure there was no factory turbo td42 in the gq model range sold in australia, early gu td42s were non intercooled before later having the top mount added.
