Today marks the 17th anniversary of the death of the Grundge god. Whilst he took his own life and was added to the list of the 27s club, his music has touched a lot of people in a lot of different ways. May his memmories live on in his music. R.I.P Kurt

Proof that '94 was the worst year ever: Kurt Cobain, Cab Calloway, & Bill Hicks die, & Justin Bieber is born.

Overrated artist imo. I never got the huge fascination with the guy. Still, RIP, even if it was his own doing.

Wasn't he on the heroin because of a stomach condition that cause extreme pain and no doctor could diagnose it?

Throughout most of his life, Cobain suffered from chronic bronchitis and intense physical pain due to an undiagnosed chronic stomach condition.[74] His first drug experience was with marijuana in 1980, at age 13. He regularly used the drug during adulthood.[75] Cobain also had a period of consuming "notable" amounts of LSD, as observed by Tracy Marander,[76] and "really into getting fucked up: drugs, acid, any kind of drug", observed Krist Novoselic; Cobain was also prone to alcoholism and solvent abuse.[75] Cobain's cousin Beverly, a nurse, claimed Cobain was diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as a child, and bipolar disorder as an adult. She also brought attention to the history of suicide, mental illness and alcoholism in the Cobain family, noting two of her uncles who had committed suicide with guns.[77]

Cobain's stomach condition was emotionally debilitating to him, and he intermittently tried to find its cause, usually at the insistence of Love. None of the many doctors he consulted were able to pinpoint the specific cause. He suffered from an acute self-consciousness and developed a poor body image, due to his low body weight; which was primarily due to malnourishment caused by his stomach condition, poor diet (as attributed by numerous doctors), or a combination of both.

I didn't realise heroin was an option for stomach problems...

..or it couldve been the smack which has exactly the same effect ;)

An important band in the history of music, although i think their biggest contribution has turned out to be Dave Grohl

As part of my TEE I had to do a report on him and his life. From the information i read and researched that was the explination from those close to him that he was using it because it helped him deal with the pain. Wether it's true or not I don't really know but medically he had some problems

Hahahaha I distinctly remember being in primary school art class one day and one of the boys bought in a cassette tape of Nirvana Unplugged and we got to listen to it in art while we painted cool stuff or whatever we were doing.. Not sure how old the cassette was then but that's the first time I heard Nirvana and later on got a copy of their Nevermind CD and thought it was the best thing in the world.

RIP Kurt, great artist, and a swag of dope songs.

I generally agree with alot of the things you have to say. But the above, to me, is a fucking rediculous uneducated comment. Shows a significant lack of understanding.

Anyhow, RIP. Loved the music.

Which bit? I'm not saying the band was crap... I'm just saying to my ears their music was crap. Obviously he was talented, he wouldn't have taken the world by storm the way he did if he wasn't.

If you are referring to the weak bit... I find it hard for anyone to justify how someone so popular, with literally all the money they would ever need, is so depressed they need to take their own life.

yeahlow34
08-04-2011, 10:45 AM
The weak part.

Depression is a chemical inbalance in the brain. All the money/cars/houses/fame in the world does not negate the fact that someone is depressed. It's not as simple as just surrounding yourself with things of value.

Unfortunately, there is this misconception among most people that money buys happiness....and therefore you can avoid being depressed. It just is not the case. As I said, a lack of understanding and education.

fourseven
08-04-2011, 10:54 AM
Fair comment. The chemical imbalance is more often than not brought on by life events though, right? It's rare for it to be hereditary. I remember reading an article on Cobain years ago about how his unhappiness was usually a result of his popularity and his music reaching the mainstream. He wanted his music to remain "underground", not played on the radio. If this is the case, I'm still finding it hard to see the justification in blowing your head off with a shotgun as opposed to bowing out of the industry, getting off the gear and avoiding the party lifestyle which probably contributed significantly to his depression.

Not to try and compare, but I spent a couple of years on the streets at 14. I was pretty fucking depressed. When I managed to get back on my feet, the only thing that made me happy was having money to live. So I think money can bring some happiness and it's the only thing that got me through at the other end.

Maybe read up a bit on how depression works?
Clinic depression is a psychological disorder, you could have the hottest bitches and be the richest guy in the world but if theres something wrong in your head, its not going to fix it now is it... Its the same as schizophrenia, these things don't just "Go Away"

Edit; Damnit, beaten.

I know how depression works. I got fed the same lines over and over. I thought about suicide plenty of times - sounded like a much better option than having to find a stinky fucking place to sleep every night.

I'm just not a believer in everything the medical world has to say on the subject.

Klutch

Everyone gets some form of depression in their lives at some point, some worse than others, some last days some lasts months. You got your depression of a shitty situation that you eventually overcame.

Clinical Depression/Major Depressive Disorder is a little different than your ordinary depression, as it never actually goes away. The person might be okay for a few months but nothing specific will trigger it, and BAM, they're back to how they were. It tuants you, "oh, im feeling pretty good this week", then for no specific reason, 12 hours later you're back at a low point after having had a taste of being happy and content.

This is the type of depression of which people take medication for, and this is the type of depression that most often people kill themselves over, they get sick of constantly battling this that they just give up, why live life when its a constant struggle, looking around you while others are getting on and enjoying life while you're stuck dwelling and hating it. After a decade that'd get pretty damn tiring for anyone.

I'm presuming this is what kurt cobain had since i've read that he suffered depression and had previous suicide attempts, and he had clinical depressed relatives that had also killed themselves.

Not a huge Nirvana fan personally.
Can appreciate the music for what it is, but as Dan Le Sac said,

"Thou shalt not put musicians and recording artists on ridiculous pedestals no matter how great they are or were.
The Beatles... Were just a band.
Led Zepplin... Just a band.
The Beach Boys... Just a band.
The Sex Pistols... Just a band.
The Clash... Just a band.
Crass... Just a band.
Minor Threat... Just a band.
The Cure... Just a band.
The Smiths... Just a band.
Nirvana... Just a band.
The Pixies... Just a band.
Oasis... Just a band.
Radiohead... Just a band.
Bloc Party... Just a band.
The Arctic Monkeys... Just a band.
The Next Big Thing.. JUST A BAND."
