Was looking at buying a bonsai tree (unsure of what species) and was wondering if anyone on here has one/has any experience with growing them?? I've heard they can be (or at least some can be) quite temperamental at times.
Was looking for an indoor species to sit on my desk.
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about they're basically a miniature version of a large tree/bush that is kept small through pruning and other means.
Look like these...

i prefer the ones with small leaves, really gives it a miniature tree feel. bonsais (plural?) with big leaves like the one pictured just look like a regular pot plants on steriods...
where were you going to buy your bonsai from Torquen? I only know of the shop at freo markets, was just wondering what other places have them?

As cem1790 said markets at Freo normally have them. I got one of these for a house warming present once but didn't realise how much time they needed to keep them alive and healthy, hence it died.
Now i have a cactus

I have ALWAYS wanted one of these.
What maintenance requirements are there, don't you just water it once a day?

http://www.bonsaipalace.net.au/Bought a couple from him as they are very well priced. Great guy to deal with and quite helpful. Also check out the 'Bonsai Emporium' in the Swan Valley. It's quite a large nursery of just Bonsais! Has pruning tools, pots, mulch and even classes on how to make a bonsai.

Pretty sure there's an outlet store for a bonsai nursery that sells them at Wanneroo and Malaga markets also. Was going to go to one of them to have a looksie this weekend.
I like the ones that flower or have berries/fruit make it look more like a real miniature tree IMO.

There's a specific bonsai shop/expert on Grand Promenade in Bedford.
Near the IGA, between Beaufort St and Walter Road.
I'd love to get a bonsai....think I might.
They're quite expensive from memory though.

So they required alot of work, anyone care to explain?
I'm guessing they need sunlight, water and trimming ? But what else makes them so hard to keep?

mate if your not into it 100% and you just want one on your desk to look cool ... go to bunnings and grab one of theirs for 30 bucks
you want to care for it day in and day out and will treat it like a child / pet then pay the few hundred to 1k and get a good one.

point is you do not want them to grow to a tree!
thats why u need to trim them down and pick the "Good" leaves and branch.

Lee's Bonsais. thats where i got mine from. they're not exactly cheap but they're fucking cool! they take a bit of water and care though.
also theres a bonsai lady in the subi markets next to one of the vege shops. she prunes mine and she sells bonsai's and everything you need for them

My mother (not azn) has been growing bonsais since before Mr. Mayagi was getting young boys to wash his cars. The oldest one in her collection was created by her in 1974 and has traveled three continents since leaving Europe in 1986. There is a science to it, she does crazy shit like exposing certain roots in particular seasons to manipulate which direction an adolescent tree grows. From what I've seen keeping goldfish alive is easier than cultivating bonsai.

Hazarding a guess here. But it would be a piece of drift wood with water plants sprouting from it and probably kept trimmed to shape for affect.

Nah, just a bit of driftwood and moss as said above, still needs a lot of fucking work

Lol, do you take it there every couple of weeks?
There's a Jap takeaway shop near where I live and the owner has a few there and has some bonsai books that I flip through when I go get some takeaway. Would like to get into it one day.
