Ok, this may be a rudimentary question ... but is there a way to make the games run on a PC without having the disc in the machine?
Have read about CD Emulators or no-disc hacks ... but basically don't want the disc in my machine all the time ... any ideas?

first you will need to create an ISO image of your cd - not sure what program to use for this however once this is done you use daemon tools to host the ISO file on a virtual drive which the PC reads as a normal CD driver however its reading it off your hard drive.
if its a game you're trying to host you will need to find a NO CD patch for the .exe file in the main directory of the game otherwise its just going to say "no cd"
say had a need for speed game, the file for example that launches the game on your C drive would be perhaps NFS.exe, you find a NO CD version of the file on the web which is normally for pirates and overwrite the file in the directory.
software programs however are normally ok

Find a No-CD fix or "Crack" and off you go. Can use ISO images but they take up too much space on HDD imo

Can get a 2TB hard disk for $90 these days so storage should not be an issue unless you're a poor pingpingpingping, I keep ISO images of all my games because they're quicker to install.
As above, gamecopyworld/gameburnworld will find you 99% of No-CD patches for any game, or megagames.com is another option but it's gone downhill in recent years.
Would NOT recommend googling or searching public torrent sites as they are full of dodgy "custom" files and you will end up with a nice virus/trojan that will hose your PC
If you still can't find what you're after, PM me with the game & version and I'll try to help.

Add game to Steam. So long as it is a legit game, should add and work no worries.
