Hey guys,
Looking at a 2J TT Supra and it has this odd clicking noise coming from the engine. Checked the oil and it's full so not sure what this noise is or where it's coming from.
Can anyone help out with this one?
Cheers

Not enough information sorry mate.
Can be anything from belts, tappets, lifters, knock etc.

i remember it sounding like something was knocking against something else. sounds a bit metallic and hollow (first guess was around the head). not sure where it's coming from but it's a really distinctive sound. thats about all i have unfortunately.

I think I had a similar sound and no idea what it was, nor ever figured it out. From what other people have said they get a ticking sound and it is common in these engines?
Might be worth checking with WTF Auto or some of the 2JZ experts on here, got a video of it?

nah not video or anything. thought id be able to explain it but it's a little hard now lol

injectors can be quite noisy. also valve clearances, they dont usually do much
if it has a 6speed gearbox the box can chatter and sounds like a deep metalic noise, like big ends. but is a characteristic, ummmm also turbo's die on them, usually rear one can sound like a metalic scraping noise. usual blue smoke on start up and after you de-cel. other than that there a pretty sound motor.
good luck with purchase

2J's love to tick mine does too pretty sure it's the lifters.

Only does it on boost?
Might be a boost control solenoid knocking against body

If it was a mitsi i'd say definately lifters but wouldn't like to say on a supra. Normally an oil change will change/get rid of the noise lifters make which is a good indication thats what it is.

does it have a after market front mount ? ive noticed the piping sometimes comes close to the p/s or a/c pulley on inlet manifold side , so it could just be something silly and easy like that.

Unless you throw a big turbo on an N/A engine.
for what its worth - i never blew turbo's, but running them in parellel saves the pressure slamming into the 2nd turbo when the valves open.

nar N/A motors with turbos are ok, just when this bloke manual isnt driving it hahah.

nah this is bog stock.
a mate is telling me its the "big end bearing" and the engine will more then likely shit itself soon. sounds a lil dumb. does a "big end bearing" even exist?
sorry not too switched on with all the fiddly bits :/
edit: just been told it sounds like a tractor now.... wtf:confused:

yes big end bearing does exist. its the bearing for the crank and little end bearing is what the rod runs on,
if it sounds like a tractor i wouldnt buy it personally. shes pretty much fucked

Offer $400 and buy a couple of engine rebuilding books, an engine stand and have a play!

big end bearings are JZ weak point im afraid , sounds like u'll need a minor bottom end rebuild.

Anyone have a good guide on how to run turbos in true twin mode on 2JZ's/done them itself? Would prefer to hear from someone who has done it themselves.. :D

Had a switch installed for less than 20 minutes.
Same power (Dyno Proven)
Lag of a GT42
No gain.
Serious waste of time.

I didn't think you would gain any power or anything, I am more interested in it reducing the chance of the 2nd turbo being damaged over time... is there a benefit to this?

For what its worth, not really
Stock twins in good condition can be picked up for less than $150. You can have your twins high flowed/steel wheeled/enlarged wastegate for less than $1500 from memory.
Cast manifold and GT35 is less than 2k, including custom downpipe if your really keen....

Yeah fair point - thanks mate!

I completely removed the sequential setup from my stock twins ... got rid of all the vacuum lines off the top of the engine.
with the 6spd I didn't mind it. my reasoning was I was going big single, so might as well get used to a similar power delivery method - rather than the sequential setup.
I was running about 18psi up to about 21psi through my stock twins in TTC, but everyone is different.
One of things i found was in TTC there was no issues with VSV's not opening IACV's or the like when downshifting ... but again - personal preference.
