View Full Version : 4runner engine swap help
story is mate bought a 4runner 3.0 v6 which did one offroad trip before developing a bottom end knock that sounds like one of those UK speedcore thrash type songs.. but with more bass and a faster tempo
apparently the motor is the 3.0 from the camry? have sourced a t-boned 3.0 camry and wondering just how hard its gonna be to swap the motors over? whats different between the two?
cheers

5 vz isnt it? Off the top of my head isnt the camry motor transverse where as the runner is north south. Maybe sump and engine mounts. If your stuck i've got a 5vz out of a prado that's identical i can have a look at
that would be great! or sell it?
think it might be a 3vz according to google

4runner = 3VZE
Camry = 3VZFE
Prado = 5VZFE
We have one, looked at 1UZ conversions, but if i can find a 5VZFE i will go down that path instead ... more bolt in than 1UZ ... still needs rewiring though ...
not interested in putting anything different in there. never done an engine swap so unless its plug and play im fucked

so if thats the case and those are the engine codes then i'd assume that it would bolt up with minor work. Reasoning behind this is toyota engines of the same designation are very similar. For example...
A toyota tercel came out with the 3A-C motor. I dropped in a 4A-SCV and then a 4AGE 20 valve. Same as a 7AFE fits. The only major modifications were changing the sump to suit the front 4wd diff.
The first number being the series so 5, second number being the block designation VZ, F meaning steep cut intake ports for economy and E meaning electronically injected. So the 3VZ is an earlier, smaller displacement motor in the hilux atm, the 3VZFE should be the same tranny pattern (double check that) and the F simply means economy head. I'd believe that the 5VZ would be a bolt in given the similarities of the lux/prado transmissions.
Assuming that the motor physically bolted up fine in there then the wiring would be a piece of piss. Toyota's have some of the most basic, reliable engine control units in early motors like that. Shit they were still using batch injection up until 96 on the 3RZ.
If anyone can jump in with more knowledge or if they've had an engine out to double check then would be good but from my past experiences with there 4 bangers and 6's the engine codes are pretty much the same PCD with only a few minor mods needed physically

unfortunately not a direct easy swap. Intake manifold needs to be custom fabbed and mounts modified etc aswell as some wiring shite. Has been done but if your looking for a bolt in easy swap not the path to take. 5vz is a drop in though. Want me to ask my mate how much he's willing to part with it for?
Check out the ttora and yotatech forums. Few guys have covered it. Old mate in perth texted back about it and he ran a standalone and modified a fair bit of shit to get it running. Word has it though that a 5vz manifold will bolt up with minor adjustments if you dont want to cut and change the stock manifold

check toyotasurf and perth4x4 for anyone wrecking/selling complete car etc.
otherwise, wouldn't the surf motors bolt right in?
or wreck it for parts - buy a good one?

otherwise - if the 2.4TD bolts in straight - i know of one for sale for about $2500 to $3k that has just been fresh rebuilt including turbo etc. (spent something like 7-8k on rebuild) and wrote the car off (surf) - i was looking at buying the car myself for parts. body is average. but most parts straight swap into 4runner.
if you want details, let me know. I dont know if i have his number anymore, but I do know where the car is. ;)

care to ellaborate?
No
They are very different with no mounting points for rwd manifold faces the wrong way, water pump has no provision for fan. ie too much work to bother
