Hey guys.
I think I have stripped my sump plug.
At the moment I'm not sure if it's just the plug or the sump that is stripped.
Basically when I try tighten it it gets tight to a point and then gets loose again and just continually keeps spinning. It is also dripping oil.
Was just wondering if anyone else has done the same or knows of a way to repair it?
Thanks
Also it's off an RB26

use die and tap tool
if its fail.
remove it and change it

if tap and die fails, drill it out and retap it with a bigger thread and use bolt + copper washer to suit.
and thread sealant

If your tapping it then the sump needs to come off or you will have metal shavings in the sump once you have finished

^ +1
Be mindful of this.
Spewin! That's unlucky. Can you get the sump off a rb26 whilst in the car?

sump doesnt have to come off, just get all the swarf out with your finger & pour oil thru to flush out any that might remain

Think I might try this method.
Does anyone know what size tap I will need and if I am able to get an oversized plug?
You can buy over sized sump plugs and repair kits.
You all ready stripped the thread once, pay somebody to do it for you, your mechanical skill sets are obviously lacking if you struggle with an oil change!
my 2c's anyway

Thanks for the confidence Mys1.
Actually the last oil change was done at a workshop.
I'm assuming coventry's will be my best bet for the repair kit?
Is the sump plug a magnetic one? Ive had a ebay spec megnetic sump plug snap on me when i went to tighten it (didnt even tighten it that much) and i initially thought that the thread skipped but when i looked closer at the sump plug, the threaded part of it snapped away from the head..

^lol
try autopro innaloo
but first get the plug out & see if its the thread on the sump or plug (or both) thats stuffed.
you might get lucky and only need a new plug, but chances are the sump thread is stripped.
if so measure the dia of the plug & get a slightly bigger one with matching tap.
Heaps of people mash these and i don't understand how.
Find someone with a helicoil kit and the skill to repair it (without removing sump).
there is no way i would be drilling and tapping a sump without removing it from the car. just my personal opinion but better to be safe and have a nice clean sump rather than having metal shavings in there.
ive done it before no hassels at all.
most of the swarf will be on the tap especially if theres grease on it.
could also prod a magnet in there but a finger with a rag will do the job anyway.
btw, no drilling will be needed if he just goes up one thread size.

This guy comes highly recommended on several forums:

About to use him myself, stripped a bolt in my gearbox on the weekend doing a clutch bolt, gotta love it when you torque to spec and the thread comes out, joy!

have seen him do some good stuff. removed snapped crank bolt from a mates pajero, which would have been a fun job. but at the same time, i showed him the best way to use a twist socket when we got him into work to get a stuck wheel nut off.

I work for a Nissan dealership and have seen many cars come in with stripped sumps from stooopid pngpng apprentices. Both aloy and steel. All we do is get a hellicoil kit from repco and helicoil it. Sump doesnt have to come off, just make sure you flush out all the swarf, with oil. Would you like the size or part number of the helicoil kit?

Slow drill speed with a dob of grease on the drill. As you slowly drill through the swarf sticks to the grease. Helps if your doing it with the sump on.
fuk using a helicoil, since you have to tap it anyway might as well tap it for a slightly larger plug.

Workshop apprentice + rattlegun was enough to rape a mates 1jz sump plug :/

Just stating how i would get it out, saves you the hassle of matching up another bolt/sump washer. Plus helicoil will have a stronger thread, which would be needed in a aloy sump.....
bullshit you dont need a stronger thread than stock & anyway tapping it out to slightly larger diameter will have a similar effect if for some strange reason thats a concern.
cost of a helicoil kit vs 1 metric tap is a no brainer.

I'll have my opinions you can have yours! SCHWEET
Would rather have standard 14mm sump plug than some cooner bunning's spec bolt.

Exactly! Be carful not to drill/tap a thread too much larger or you will more then likely run into oil leak issues

cooner spec for you maybe or where you work, but a stock looking plug one thread size up worked for me.
ima fitter machinist, what do i know about threads & helicoils installed in thru - holes..

as extremely remote as that could be you realise using a helicoil would do the same thing - if not worse cause the tap will be bigger.

Im talking about on the mating surface of the bolt head side if things, not thread. Either way he has 2 options of how to fix it.
1) helicoil
2) drill and rethread
no need to get all ancyz in the pancyz.
1) drill & helicoil
2) rethread.
fixed :)
dont know why your talking about mating faces, cause there is no real difference with the 2, if anything a helicoil just complcates the issue - they do unwind/move especially when not in a blind hole and when subject to frequent use (like a sump plug will be).
just personal preference i guess

Just to clarify im talking about the mating surface of the bolt head to the sump which is its prime seal. Hence the reason you use a sump plug washer as a seal between the two
yes im fully aware of the concept. the washer needs to be a great O.D than the thread I.D .in the sump.
