Any of the current point and shoots will suffice. But if she knows her way around a camera then check out the Canon G series. very cool little compact camera with dslr features without the weight, external lenses etc.

Ok after keeping an eye on different models etc for a while its coming close to the time she will really need one.
Any of the Perth camera shops do GE? Some of the new panasonics look like the go.

If she's going to freezing cold places, and sunny touristy places with water etc. it would be worthwhile getting one of those tough cameras, if you're only after point and shoot cam.
I've got an Olympus tough camera, waterproof to 10 metres, drop proof to 2 metres, crushproof to 100 kilos, it also works well in freezing climates and hot humid ones obviously, as it's sealed. My particular camera has gone through so much punishment (dropped on hard concrete a few times by accident, chucked at the wall from a distance when drunk to prove a point a few times lol, chucked deep in the water and shoved in sand etc). I had people step on it by accident, it's got a few dents after the years, but it refuses to die, still works like new! It's so good not having to worry hey. And you can use it practically everywhere.
Only downside is that you won't get the same image quality as the best of the point and shoot cams, but it's still nice enough, and a good compromise for the extra convenience it gives you!

Go the Lumix, its on its 3rd revision now. I have the FT1 and the FT3, My FT1 took an absolute trashing and still took a reasonable pic.
The FT3 is a good camera, also comes with a silicone case which is handy, though the LCD screen does scratch ridiculously easily though.
As far as being good enough it depends. For a casual traveller just taking happy snaps and documenting their trip, its great.
For an amateur/semi serious photog then no as its too limited in its controls.

I love our panasonic lumix.
Wish we bought a tough one after it recently hit the ground at a kids party.
I found the metering really nice - would take some shots that were on par with my (entry level) DSLR.
Would be great for traveling.

I bought the panasonic lumix ft3 recently for an upcoming holiday. It's an excellent camera for the price.
I got mine from a hk based seller on eBay, acquired it for $270 shipped with free screen protector, carry case and travel power adaptor.
Takes excellent macro shots too.
