Pretty worried about Lotus' strategy with Grosjean. Was really hoping he could pull out a win as the Lotus and McLaren look like they have pretty comparable race pace but I think Grosjean is going to wear through those tyres way to quick. Strat would have worked if they could have jumped Lewis during the stop, or if he passed him within a few laps but every lap he spends behind him will put him in a worse position for the last stint of the race.

Watching the Red Bull's on the main straights is so frustrating, they really need to work on their straight line speed. Button's McClaren was pulling a couple of tenths on him with no DRS!

did webber really need that third pitstop? his pace seemed good, seems he just cost himself 5th place. Unless he thought he could get a fresh set and hope for the other tyres to do in the last ten laps, which they didnt seem to do. Made fuck all difference!

POH73
29-07-2012, 09:52 PM
I get the feeling that it was a kneejerk reaction as he was catching Vettel very quickly, instead of him getting held up they pitted him, then 1-2 laps later they pitted Vettel anyway. Why not pit vettel as he was 1.5 secs or so slower which would then release MW? Stupidly for RBR, they could have got P4 & P5 WCC points. That's the way I see it anyway....

Anyway, congrats lewis, Kimi & Romain!

Wouldn't be a GP without a potato smash.

Aside from that and a lotus wheel nudge that was incredibly boring...
So many better circuits available out there. Processions are even more boring when the cars are clearly faster than those infront. They all drove well and did their jobs. But I nearly fell asleep.

Ferrari traditionally get faster/better in the second half of the season. For the last few years anyway. I don't think they are too concerned yet.

Kimi surely to win the next race or 2.

LOL I didn't mean it like that. They've had more wins than anybody overall and a lot over the last 10/15 years. Take away the Brawn/Red Bull dominant years and the rest were Schumi/Rubens/Kimi in a Ferrari and then Kimi in a McLaren. So I'd be tipping Fred or Kimi.

Cheeky fuck.

What a terrible season they're having!

TR? they sure are, i expected to be improved and they were wuite competitve amongst the mid pack. This year most of the mid pack (williams, sauber, force india) have all stepped it up and TR the only ones that havent!! in fact a backwards step. The only ones they can beat are the back markers!
started promising after a points finish for DR in round 1 but nothing since! Vergne a points finish a malaysia but thats it. Seriosuly dissapointed.

Brockas
30-07-2012, 12:08 PM
Look where the money comes from.

If they have a spare $3M to spend, are they going to spend it improving RBR or STR?

STR will never be a strong team. They are simply a driver training team, keeping a couple of drivers warm until a seat at RBR becomes available.

TJ
30-07-2012, 12:31 PM
I dont think it works like that Paul. Pretty sure they have to declare their expenditure to the FIA including sources etc. Dont think they can switch money over teams.

It was only a little nudge. Driver had to go wide off track.

Joe
30-07-2012, 02:05 PM
For once I actually think Pasta didn't do it on purpose.. it really did seem like he was counter steering at that point, and just ran wide in doing so and nudged Di Resta.

No matter what, I still reckon he's 100% potato-spec for all the incident's he's caused in the past few races, but in that particular incident, I think the stewards came down on him purely because of his previous history.

fourseven
30-07-2012, 02:26 PM
Yeah he was only trying to correct losing the rear end. But still, fuck him.

LOL Di Resta didn't choose to go off track, he got hit so hard that he got 'bumped' off track. It was a fair whack!

He never does it on purpose.

His move on Perez - on the inside, lost the rear, took Perez out.
His move on Hamilton - Refuses to give up the inside line, hits the kerb, launches himself into Lewis.

It's the same thing every time. Other drivers give him room, he gets out of shape, and takes them out anyway!

That replay looks like it's not a huge hit but Di Resta turned off track to avoid it being any worse.

Joe

He definitely hasn't learned how to count to potato yet

MGR
30-07-2012, 03:57 PM
but in that particular incident, I think the stewards came down on him purely because of his previous history.

I think the stewards would've penalised any driver in the same situation.

The dive up the inside was OK and Di Resta gave plenty of room through the apex - both cars well under control. It wasn't until Potato lost control of his car by picking up the throttle too early that he gave Di Resta a slap gaining himself a position in the process.

The fact that Di Resta did everything that could be expected of him to avoid an incident would've also contributed to the Steward's decision to award the drive-through.

Some props should be given to Potato though. At least he was having a go at overtaking...

He doesnt back off enough, then expects others to get out of the way, he clearly just doesnt understand.
$30mil might buy you a seat, but it cant remove that extra chromosome...

its getting frustrating to watch. He calls himself an "agressive" driver, but there is no skill in what he does, he tries too hard, is too wild, and constantly fucks up and smacks into people.

Glad somebody picked that up. You can't use oversteer as an excuse, he's got on the throttle to try to keep the position, lost control of the car and then hit Di Resta. Effing stupid. The fact Senna has outperformed him in the season (excluding the race win) just shows how useless he is.

"Ricciardo slipping down the order and Vergne going up it after their qualifying performances"
*sigh*
Even when Ricciardo starts behind JE and beats him, he still doesn't get the credit for being a great racer!

Anyway, another point which I would argue is that the Renault KERS system is costing Renault teams 1-2 tenths.

Yes, they only have a maximum instantaneous power of 40kW and other teams have 60kW, but they still have the same total of 400kJ storage which is available to every team.

This means that their KERS is less powerful, but can be activated for longer...

Fuck me, Alonso has been one of the best guys since 2004, name the turnaround. FFS

Sully
08-08-2012, 11:21 PM
More like Ferrari's turnaround from not knowing what the fuck to do with their car this year to finally figuring out how to wring some speed out of the thing.
Couldn't really say Ferrari's turn around because Massa is still a bit hit and miss. His panel beater is still fixing up the last dents in his skull.

Brockas
09-08-2012, 01:43 AM
No shit. Alonso is one of the best (if not the best) drivers in the field. He has had no turn-around, only his car has changed.

Pastor is a down-syndrome'd pingpingpingping who races in F1 like he did in GP2... in other words, he races as if the cars can't be broken and points aren't important, only wins are important.

Pretty keen to see Bruno smash him for the rest of the season.

Sully
09-08-2012, 04:08 AM
Yeah agreed, he's shown many a time that he only needs a half competitive car and he'll do something interesting with it.

Pastor got lucky with the win earlier this year. Everyone acknowledges that it was a lottery figuring out the tyres this year. Retards win the lotto all the time. I reckon there's a possibility that he could do a Lorenzo/Simoncelli (minus the death bit) and go from being pretty fast but crashes a lot, then move on to just being outright fast. He's just gotta stop pushing stupid moves that he and the car aren't capable of.

In other news that everybody has probably head already, Ferrari haven't executed their option on Massa for next season so that's a bit of a pointer. What are the latest wild theories for who's going to take that seat? Just about everyone on the grid has been linked to it. Lots of people still crapping on about Vettel going there in 2014 so it's a bit of a gamble that it might be a 1 year jobbie. Defo a #2 driver contract.

Autopilot
09-08-2012, 06:39 AM
There is no way Ferrari wants two number one drivers, They need a subjugated number two capable of the odd win, to support Alonzo and help chip away at the constructors title. It's how it's been for a long time with Ferrari.

Well, it's almost Spa time!

News from the break:

McLaren will be debuting their new 'double-DRS' system which could see them very quick in quali.
Lotus will be racing with their new DRS system for the first time at Spa.
DRS zone has been shortened by 50m.

There are some very decent bets going right now.

Alonso, Kimi, and Romain are all paying 10:1 for pole position.

Kimi is paying $6 for the race win, with Vettel and Hamilton paying $4.25 and $3.25 respectively.

Ferrari have an upgrade package for Spa but don't think its anything major (might just be the front wing they have try 3 times lol), Big package is due for Singapore.

From what Ferrari have been saying it was an issue with computer data not matching track data... They said they know what the issue is now and it should be fix.

Seems like they have gone back to the old way of Ferrari thinking... Don't Race with a new part/update unless they are sure it will produce results

McLaren will not debut double DRS at Belgian Grand Prix

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh has denied rumours that the team will introduce double DRS at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, but left the door open for the appearance of such a device later in the year.

There had been speculation that McLaren would become the third Formula 1 team to employ such a system, which gives a straightline speed boost by stalling the airflow over wings.

Mercedes pioneered it at the start of the season, before Lotus' version made its debut in German GP practice.

When asked by AUTOSPORT if a McLaren double DRS would appear at Spa, Whitmarsh dismissed such suggestions. But he also hinted that a comparable system might be in the pipeline.

"There is no doubt that the double DRS is interesting, but I think there are other variants of it starting to be seen on other teams' cars, so they might not follow a pattern that we saw on the Mercedes," he said.

"But we are not announcing when, where or if we are going to introduce it.

"I think people will see different wing variants, certainly on our car in scrutineering tomorrow and as they take to the track.

"So we will see new bits but McLaren will not have a double DRS in Belgium."

Lotus is set to race its double DRS for the first time this weekend if the system performs without problems in practice.

Spa is regarded as the ideal track for the device due to its long straights and the potential for drag reduction.

Although Monza has similarly long straights, it requires minimal drag levels so double DRS would not offer as great a benefit.

AUTOSPORT revealed last month that double DRS would be banned for 2013.

LOL, that means he will be right in the middle of an Alonso/Hamilton sandwich with Sergio directly in the line of fire of one of Potato's BLAT moves. I believe he decided he didn't want to run the new bits and Jenson did. the new bits were faster and then Lewis decides to have a cry about it and post technical information about the parts on Twitter in some attempt to explain why it's the cars fault he's slower then Jenson. (Ignoring the fact he choose to run the old parts)

'The Lewis Hamilton Formula One ‘McLaren Twittergate’ affair deepened on Sunday.

On Saturday, 'Tweets' posted by the 2008 World Champion and featuring the obscenity acronym 'WTF' (WHAT THE F**K) suggested Jenson Button had been given a better front wing in qualifying.

The Tweets were deleted.

Then, ahead of Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix, the ‘McLaren Twittergate ' affair shifted into a higher gear when Hamilton posted via his social media account an image of a confidential McLaren telemetry sheet.

The sheet was apparently evidence of Button's qualifying advantage at Spa Francorchamps, with hand written remarks making clear Hamilton lost '6 tenths on the STRAIGHT' to the sister McLaren.

It also included sensitive team information, including the MP4-27's ride height.

"He was asked to take it down and he did it immediately," team boss Martin Whitmarsh is quoted by the BBC.

The affair comes amid Hamilton's reported tense negotiations with McLaren over his new contract for 2013.

"This is effectively a war," an unnamed paddock member said.

Whitmarsh, adding that Hamilton apologised, explained: "He misjudged the (telemetry) situation.

"He wasn't thinking clearly, obviously."

The 27 year old British driver crashed at the first corner on Sunday, and did not appear for interviews during the race.

Afterwards, he said: "I really don't want to talk about the start. People can see what happened."'

Jazza
03-09-2012, 10:26 AM
I posted the tweet before but obviously as it says it's been deleted. It showed telemetry data of where Button was faster on the straights and the comment read "something something wtf, we chose the wrong wing, I'll have to support Button in the race and see how we can do"

The telemetry should never of been posted up but his response to what had happened in quali was exactly what any other drivers would of been, standard media and Lewis haters blowing something up. It's hardly a big deal.
Also fairly sure it was the rear wing not the front wing.

TJ
03-09-2012, 10:37 AM
Yup rear wing.

Lewis and the team decided to use the old wing because after Q3 Lewis hadnt got a clean lap in and wasnt sure if it worked.

The WTF would have come when he saw the 6 tenths in sector 1.

But it is Lewis, gotta bag him wherever.

Buckets
03-09-2012, 10:38 AM
Fair call "WTF" it's the standard response to loosing 6 10th's in one sector but usually it would be expected that information of that nature is highly confidential and not something to post on the internet for the world and your competitors to see.

Jazza
03-09-2012, 10:48 AM
You could look at the sector times and see the same info as the telemetry photo he had posted, it had a few bits of information on the side of it but the important stuff was out of the photo it was just lines showing usual telemetry. Shouldn't of been posted but hardly revealing much to the competitors unless people were unsure on where to accelerate/brake lol

TJ
03-09-2012, 10:54 AM
Yeah I dont overly agree with it, but the only info really readable was ride height - what anyone could do with that after q3 with cars in parc ferme I am not sure.

That crash was insane. Very lucky nobody was hurt.

I don't think the stewards were reacting due to the severity of the crash, they were reacting to another incident caused by Romain. He wasn't ready for F1 the first time, and he's quickly showing that he's not ready this time either.

He's fast when nobody is around him, but he can't race in a pack.

100% Grojeans fault, it's obvious.

However when I was watching it on the tv I kind of thought that Lewis did seem to have another 20cm of road, but fair enough it looked like grojean was coming further across no matter what.

I kind of feel like Hamilton just expects nobody around him to challenge him sometimes, a few incidents this year where it seems he's been more like well if they are going to drive like that then we are going to crash...

Sure, the incidents aren't his fault, but he could pay attention to the fact not everyone is going to drive smooth and clean around him.

On the flip side he doesn't really pull dangerous moves on others.

Anyway, I actually like hamiltons driving most of the time, I just feel like he'd be better off taking into account that not everything goes perfect around him.

Bingo, hence why a lot of people didn't shed a tear when he crashed out. Reminds me much of Casey Stoner.

I don't think the stewards were reacting due to the severity of the crash, they were reacting to another incident caused by Romain. He wasn't ready for F1 the first time, and he's quickly showing that he's not ready this time either.

He was penalised because of the potential for injury, and the fact he took serious championship contenders out of the race. Straight from the FIA press release.

The £40,000 fine was a response to his seven first-lap crashes in 12 races.

Double world champion Alonso refused to criticise Grosjean, who was his team-mate at Renault (which is now Lotus) in the second half of 2009. "I am not angry," Alonso said. "No-one do this on purpose. They were fighting, two aggressive drivers on the start, Lewis and Romain and this time it was us in the wrong place and the wrong moment and we were hit.

All class.

lol yeh right! If he was watching the accident he would of turned away from the incident not tried to make a spinning Ferrari go over the top of his front wheel. Whoever made that is effing stupid!

It DOES look mint, especially the low profile rubber which they're talking about introducing in the next couple of years to "modernise" the look. From memory current F1 wheels are 13 dia"?

I don't think I'd want to be in one upside down with a fuel fire though....

Joe

Only problem with canopies such as above, is the driver getting out of the vehicle quickly... what will happen to the 5 second time limit that is critical to fire protection of the driver?

I suppose they could blow the canopy off if need be like a fighter jet, but thats going to be complex and heavy and I doubt that anyone would want to have explosive charges aboard the cars.

What about the cleanliness of the windscreens? Dirt will reduce visibility, and this will create a safety issue. Windscreen wipers on F1 cars? Can't and won't happen.

There has to be other ways.. a small forward roll hoop structure, or maybe even a solution similar to those pop-up roll hoops used in convertibles, but adapted to sense when something (such as a wayward vehicle) is ingressing the cockpit. Active safety is something that shouldn't be too hard to integrate.

In relation to addressing flying components i.e. Massa Hungary 2008 incident, passive protection isn't the answer.. the answer is safety via design. In other words, to ensure that components are designed in a way that they are captured and can't possibly come loose of the car i.e. flying wheels are tethered and have been since Senna died, although this too is limited in its use, as we've seen lots of flying wheels since (Henry Surtees in GP2 was the most recent flying wheel casualty in high level motor racing). Other components that can be deadly are generally captured within bodywork anyway.. suspension bits and springs going missing is extremely rare, and I don't think we'll ever see it again.

We can't completely rule out anything happening, if F1 had to make changes to pre-empt any racing incident, then the cars would look nothing like they are now.. they'd have to be completely redesigned to be safe in every single way. Motorsport is dangerous, and only so much can be done to prevent people getting hurt. I think there isn't too much more that can be done to save F1 drivers from potential injury, that hasn't already been done. They are the absolute safest race cars in the world, and the track record of injuries and deaths in modern time is better than a lot of other sports out there!

A closed cockpit would be more aero functional than an open one MGR.. so I'm not sure what you mean?
I don't think we'll see that anytime soon I just think it's a cool concept design!

Sully

It'll probably be more of a cage style design. They'll still want the cockpit to be open for safety reasons and it's also something that F1 always has been, it wouldn't be the same if it was closed in.

It'd be best if they left the teams to design their own protection systems, set a safety requirement to be met, and let them run free with it. We'd get all sorts of different ideas.

Mark is probably taking about the low-nose design and large rim size.

Those saying that the closed canopy wouldn't work; need I mention Audi with the lemans racers; they went from an open to a closed top design. Peugeot run a closed car too. Regarding time to get out in an accident or a dirty windscreen; F1 is not the only form of motorsport, they are plenty of closed type cars (including space frame, prototype and production cars) that race and crash and require tear offs or windscreen cleans during pit stops.

The only reason the closed canopy wouldn't work is it goes away from the "formula" type of racing vehicle.

Joe - tethers on wheels/tyres; wheel went bouncing along the track on the first corner incident at Spa on the weekend, that tether didn't work!

Looks awesome but wtf is with that car ariel poking up from behind the cabin.

Low profile tyres would look nice however, given the amount of force each F1 car puts on its tyres during each race, I cant see them making one lap under current conditions before being ripped to shreds. I like the concept though.

Franz I have no doubt that they could make a closed in cockpit work, in fact it'd solve a hell of a lot of issues for them, aero, safety, visibility, etc. It would just take something away from the spectacle. There's something about seeing the driver out in the open rather than cocooned away inside a cabin. I don't think too many of the drivers would be for it if there was a viable open topped alternative.

Bingo. Would definitely take away from the spectacle. Won't have drivers gesturing to each other any more, or fist pumping when they win etc. It will all just look boring IMO.

Actually, Spa was the perfect example of the tethers working the way they are designed.

If you have a look at the .gif below, you can see 1 wheel come off and only after Grosjean lands. In times gone by there would have 5+ wheels flying off in all directions.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-GsNxWaKAgew/UENQWZVh_vI/AAAAAAAAAHw/sTbA2qXSUQs/s450/f1start.gif

Wheel also came off Karthikyan's car later in the race, but that was because it was cross threaded in the pits, so the failure was wheel-hub, not hub-subframe. Tether couldn't prevent that.
