What gear have you got?
I've shot a nightclub once. It was good fun though had to be careful camera can get broken easy.
I shot with my 5d, 24-70 f/2.8L and 430exII with stofen.
Settings were around 800iso, f/4, shutter 1/30.
I stuck to manual mode, but flash on auto ETTL.
I wouldn't drag the shutter unless you're after the effect (which does work with some night club lights), most shots you will want to keep nice and sharp, which means a faster shutter speed.

Cheers,
Yeah with the stofen on it.
You get much nicer light bouncing off walls but in a nightclub where the walls are black/dark, you waste way too much battery power if its even possible.

Thanks for the advice dude - im running a 30d with 580exII
i like the crisp clear shots, and up until last week thats what i've been getting... but i wanted to have a play and see if i could pull off the noisy, grungier looking effect you get with the 2nd shutter sync... Im going to give it a go on with the flash synced to first curtain as well and see what different effects i can get with that.
heres a couple from about a month ago - to get these i dont use any of the cards or diffusers in the lens, i just point it straight up and bounce it off the roof... I found because the roof is so low, you can get ample light onto the faces, but without too much light in the background which i like in nightclub shots, gives it a little more mystery haha.

IMHO i've never noticed a difference shooting 1st or 2nd curtain sync.
Generally i'll set my camera on manual to expose about 2 stops under ambient, so the background is dull(but not dark) and the flash fills in the subject to keeping the focus on them.
1st curtain is much easier for effects. As soon as you see the flash go you can move the camera around as the flash will keep your subjects sharp.
Somtimes bouncing off the roof sprays light everywhere and you end up filling in the background aswell.

My tips: needs more light, can hardly make out any details - the sky was exposed correctly thought. I'd also straighten the horizon and if you know how clone out the trash in the background to clean it up a bit.

I agree with you mate.
IMO the photo has been taken from the completely wrong angle / side of the car...
Everything you have written makes complete sense but could have be avoided by shooting the car from the right direction and with the right background.
It looks very ordinary indeed.

I don't, for all i know its a screen calibration issue!
I don't use filter's other than UV to protect the last piece of glass, but you pay for what you get!! If it were my money, it would be Lee Filters.

I thought you were going to say the slight purple tinge to the sky???
My Cokin does it a bit and it is off putting.
The only thing I did like about the Cokin was the fact you could move the filter up and down according to the subject.
However, the colour tinge and the slight softening of the image is enough to shit me.
Lee Filters are on my hit list!

That purple tinge can be many of things, though. At first i thought it was but if the HDR isn't processed or no PP on it, you'll get the same thing from vignette of a UWA. But yes, Cokin's are horrible for throwing purple through your image.
You should be able todo the same with the Lee set.
Regardless of what filters you buy, there will always be softening. You are still shooting through more glass. But the Lee give you a nice clean shot unlike the Cokin.
Personally i wouldn't bother with them, mate. Spend a little more time learning layers and how to blend images.

Cokin = shit, I use the Lee 4x6 filters they are very good used on the 16-35mm and primes you can't tell any image degredation IMO the whole setup isn't cheap though need the holder and adapter rings, I agree with Corbin that you can blend exposures but when shooting seascapes filters are still needed alot of the time like when you want to capture water movement and light is fading etc.

I was steered down the wrong path with the Cokin but the system cost fuck all so I will chalk it up to a mistake, a bit like that Thai hooker with the adams apple, but that is another story.
I only want to use the ND's for my automotive stuff mate.
Just sick of white skys and dark cars.
If I am not flashing the whole car I like the idea of the ND's.
I also want to play around with some coloured filters too eventually.
Am I right in assuming that the Lee system is around the $500 mark?
What ND gradients would you fine gentleman suggest???
Btw,
Here is a pic I shot a few weeks back with my Cokin filter.
The sky was rather cool & purple so I am not too sure how much it has been altered in colouration :p

Nice shit bud! I use a .9nd grad hard and a .6nd grad soft, somtimes stack both if I have too, I bought mine from pra and the filters were about 180 each, the holder was somthing similar and the wide angle rings were about 90 each added upto 700 somthing, prob cheaper on the net, lee 105mm polarizor for this setup is like 400 somthing aswell lol
I was the same man bought cokins then bought a Singh ray which wasn't cheap and the lees are the best.

Marc, i like the processing here but you gotta work the composition! Usually i don't promote the rule of thirds, but it would work well on this one, also its a bit on the piss, quickly straightening the horizontal would reduce the distraction.

Nice shots mate.
Have you got a flash you can trigger wirelessly?
1. Watch for shadows over the bonnet, the roof of the building makes it look like the bonnet is dirty. But composition and lighting are good!
2. It'd take you 2 mins to edit those out...
3. The sun is low right in this shot, which means you're shooting the cars shadow... You should have shoot it from the other side and then flipped it in PS to get the same composition and little details like moving the car forward half a meter so the drain isn't visible.
I hope im not out of place with the above comments?

Not out of place at all. Much appreciated.
No, I don't have a wireless flash. And probably won't have for quite a while!
I usually get Jan to take photos of the decent cars I get - he's the pro - but for the cheap(er) cars I need to improve my skills.
A few minutes of forethought can improve things a lot I guess.

Those last 3 pictures, I think you need to concentrate more on focusing on the eyes. They're normally the main point of interest, but because you've gone for a quite shallow DoF and you're not focusing on them they're getting a little lost in the rest of the detail. I like the bird one

Yep - very good at photoshop indeed.
More of a computer guy than a photographer.
I wish I had his skills on a keyboard, thats for sure!
Btw, that one Mustang shot took literally a day to do.
It is not one photo but a number of photos layered together with each panel lit seperately and each detail in the image captured as its own focus point.
The photoshop work would have taken days to recreate the entire image.
I spoke about it with the boys from Street Machine.
