40D hey TJ you have realised that Canon is better then Nikon  its a good camera will get lots of good photos with it.

actually Nikon > Canon atm, look @ the D300 and D3, absolutely rape anything Canon has ;)

but @ the end of the day camera is only a tool, the user is more important, much like the driver of a car, vast majority of good photos come from those who have good skill. :)

there's been some awesome sunsets lately hey. did you play with the colour balance in that pic or chose a different white balance or something? looks a bit more red than i would have thought it should

DRKWRX
13-12-2007, 04:50 PM
nah mate taken with 5d and bit of saturation might be bit warm. Your kidding about the Nikons raping the Canon right? The D3 is still being compared with the Canon 5d in noise control a camera that is two and a half years old and it just beats it but te 5d is still sharper, the Nikon just uses software in camera to reduce noise, but they are different cameras look at the new Canon 1ds MKIII way better camera then the D3, but of course Nikon fans will love Nikons and vice versa and like you said the camera is just a tool, you still have to take the photos.

ELUSIV
13-12-2007, 05:08 PM
i like both Nikon and Canon, both have their strengths and weaknesses, Nikon's flash system and support for older lenses (which i have) is mainly what sold me.
1Ds MKIII is having some major issues at the moment such as the continous focussing probs that have been documented very well. The Canonites may think the 5D compares to the D3 but they are sadly mistaken, and you cant compare noise from a camera that hasnt even been reviewed properly yet. funny how Canon users continually harp on about iso noise, Canon has performed better in the past but they wont conceed the fact that Nikon has better metering, autofocus system, flash system, more comfortable cameras to use and the list goes on, tho the D3 is CMOS and the noise should be better than any current Canon offerings being a new camera.
Canon 1Ds MKIII and 5D can do ISO 100-1600 with 3200 on HI, D3 can do ISO 100-6400 with HI2 reaching ISO of up to 25600...yeh dont think Canon has anything with that.
Or autofocus? 5D has 9 standard autofocus points, D3 has 51 points with the option of 3D tracking. Exposure comp Canon + or - 3EV, D3 + or minus 5.
More importantly for those who shoot racing/rallying, 5D can do 3fps max, D3 9fps max.
List goes on but here are the links for the non-believers:

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond3/page2.asp
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos5d.asp

D3 = New GT-R
5D = 34 GT-R

Still isnt factoring in lenses, the user, post-processing, but it is clear that Canon has nothing compared to Nikon's D300/D3...yet ;)

Nice photo though, just goes to show that user is more important than equipment and there will always be something newer and better! :)

DRKWRX
13-12-2007, 05:19 PM
yeah the Nikons do have the strong points, I dont want to get into a big arguement cos I know its not going to get anywhere  I think your mistaking the 1ds mkIII for the 1d mkIII, Im a Canon Fan I believe they have the best lenses, I believe they have the best sensors thats enough for me then I take the photos  but you see comparing the 5d to the d3 is pointless compare it to the new 1dsmkIII the 21.1 megapixel one not the 1dmkIII the 10 megapixel one. The 1dmkIII does 10fps btw next time you watch a sporting event see how many white lenses you see (i know nikon makes white lenses too but i assure you most will be Canon  )

yerp apples and oranges, haha yeh its like Toyota vs Nissan no point arguing better to just go out and take pictures and enjoy what ya have :)
Like i said i like both Canon and Nikon, both have great lenses and bodies and sensors, its impossible to say one is ultimately better than they other because it really depends on what you are using them for, your budget, etc...

miss_petepie
13-12-2007, 06:15 PM
i wanna get a new camera after new years.. ive currently got a shitty cannon that isnt good for taking pro shots..

i wanna get a proper SLR.. ive found a good (well from what ive read) Nikon DSLR but a mate is pointing me to Cannon DSLR's.. gonna continue my camera hunt and read all the info I can...

DRKWRX
13-12-2007, 06:23 PM
you wont be unhappy with either, what I would say is go to a store hold each camera see which you like better also have a look at the lenses see which offers the lenses that suit you better because the lenses will be what keeps you with a certain brand over time!

miss_petepie
13-12-2007, 07:04 PM
ah yeh very true

i was gonna go and hold them all.. i tryed to hold a mates camera and didnt like it. felt way to heavy at the front.. thought that would hinder my balance nd getting good shots.. but thats that tripods are for :D

will go and suss them out before I buy.. wanna make sure I get the right ones for what I want :)

DRKWRX
13-12-2007, 07:08 PM
what camera was it?? I hold my dslr with one hand on the lens and one on camera, 5d with grip and 100-400mm feels well balanced for me! but yeah I would read as much as you can on the net then go hold them all, dont listen to the people at the stores because they know fuck all.

miss_petepie
13-12-2007, 07:46 PM
umm phark knows which one.. was a massive black one.. just didnt sit right in my hands and after a while got to heavy.. have held some others and they were easy to hold.. but the specs of the camera wasnt that good..

any sites that are good for reading on the specs of cameras?

ELUSIV
13-12-2007, 07:52 PM
ive given recommendations to a few people who are wanting to get a dslr, found these few things ive learnt as well as what others have learnt helps when you are getting in 2 it:

1) work out your budget and then see which camera bodies and lenses as well as accessories will fit into that budget

2) once u know what bodies you are keen on go to a store and see how they feel, for my hands smaller dslr's like the Canon 350D/400D and Nikon's D40 are uncomfortable, i have a D80 and it seems to be a nice size, but ive also held a Canon 30D/40D and 5D and they are fairly comfortable as well, but i prefer the Nikon ergonomics and the layout of the buttons.

3) dont jump in deep! can be tempting 2 get the best or buy a more professional body but when you start it may be worth getting a cheaper body and investing the money saved on good glass (lenses) that way if you outgrow the body its easy to use your good quality lenses on a new body

4) hunt around for good prices, i get some of my stuff off ebay shops, some off www.digitalrev.com or use www.shopbot.com.au to find best price, can save a tonne of money if ya have a bit of a hunt around :)

5) go onto the www.dpreview.com forums and start reading, theres a lot of really helpful people and people are continually posting photos which can be critiqued that way you can learn and get feedback, probably one of the most active photo communities around.

have fun! :)

miss_petepie
13-12-2007, 07:55 PM
ah great thats exactly what I needed! Ive been looking at the Nikon D300? and it looks big and has alot of specs of it.. i wanna read on how to use it and if i really need it.. will check out those sites and hunt around..

also gonna look into doing the photography course at tafe at night just to get a general understanding of it all..

DRKWRX
13-12-2007, 07:59 PM
Mate I dont know how good the Tafe course is but If I was you I would just look on Photography forums and read as much as you can, there is more information on the Internet then a tafe course can give you, and one of the most important things is practice!

miss_petepie
13-12-2007, 08:02 PM
thats very true.. im open to all options and atm reading on the nets free and gives me something to do.. gonna go and try out a few over the weekend and will do some shopping around to see what I can find :)

ELUSIV
13-12-2007, 08:04 PM
yeah a course is a good idea, D300 is a camera semi-pro/pro camera, the thing you may find is that you may be jumping into an ocean when you cant swim, its a fantastic body, just came out and is so far ahead technology wise than the D200 and rival Canon offerings, however like i said, could be a bit overwhelming. Its not uncommon to see people new to dslr photography to produce worse images with more powerful cameras than cheaper bodies too as the sensors are generally bigger and more sensitive as well as hundreds of customisable options.
If you go a D300 id definately recommend whacking it in auto for a while, but bare in mind i think D300's are like $2500 ish for the body. Easy to spend a lot as well on lenses/flash/tripod/accesories, etc...
D300 is truly awesome though!! Have to let me borrow it sometime i reckon ;)

DRKWRX
13-12-2007, 08:08 PM
yeah 2,500 is alot for your first dslr body ahah i would say cheaper body and a good lens would be a better option then you can always sell the body and upgrade if you feel the need. It will take you a while to know what everthing does properly anyways.

miss_petepie
13-12-2007, 08:10 PM
yeh i was thinking the same.. plus thats alot for me to out lay all in one go.. will see what I can find and what suits me more.. have been writing down some that I like and also stuff they have in common.. coz they have alot the same but some differences so if I can get the same for cheaper then I will be happy.. just gotta work out how to use the dam things!!

then its time for a holiday and go nuts with the camera :D

ELUSIV

def, ive never done any courses, im really critical on everything i do and constantly try to find problems with my photos so i can improve.
but i agree soooooo much to learn from the forums and looking @ other people's photos, then when you take some and experience the same thing you can understand what is going wrong :)
Only thing that sucks is processing RAW files :(

Haha no worries man.

Dont worry its acually quite easy!
I only got mine last week aswell.

1st thing you need is a tripod. Go to the national geographic shop in gallaria and theuy gave pretty good ones for $59!!

Go to a location that you want to take pics of. Set camera to "AV"
Set ISO to anything above 600
Roll that roller behind the button you push to take te pics, this will adjust how long the shutter stays open for.

You must keep camera 100% still!
You pics will come out as good if not better

Dont worry , i have loads to learn aswell. I have been playin with camera every night and readin the book many times to suss it all

I got a tripod (manfrotto one, top notch) and got a remote for the camera too. Maybe I made myself out to be more inept than I am lol I know about exposure etc the problem I'm having is that if it's pretty dark it cant focus and just doesnt take a pic. Putting flash on helps but then you have a flash.. Do you use manual focus or is there a way around it?

Cant wait to bust out some half hour exposure and get star trails when I find a place dark enough,

you wont be able to use AF during the night because the AF assist illuminator cant light up anywhere near enough of a night scene to allow the camera to focus. Most lenses have a manual focus ring, if you look through the viewfinder and keep turning it until eventually the whole scene should come into focus. If it doesnt move make sure it isnt locked.

Sully
14-04-2008, 06:32 PM
the af system works by picking out contrasting shades so if i'm doing long exposures at night i'll take a torch or some kind of light with me purely to get the focus right. shine the light on what you want to take the pic of, focus the camera then set it to manual focus so it doesn't try to refocus again when you turn the torch off and press the shutter button.

they're pretty good pics though! your composition in the first batch of pics is good!

as for picking your iso at night, you dont' want to go too high other wise you'll start getting noise (graining) in the pics. noise reduction is getting better in the new dslrs but it's just something else to keep in mind.

or go for a really long exposure... you'll be amazed at what you can pick up

this was taken at midnight over at rotto back in february i think it was. it's not the best pic in the world because i was really REALLY drunk when i took it. BUT it is midnight looking across from the middle of the island back towards perth. i think it was a 30 sec exposure

I have no idea if these are any good or not, most of them needed a bit of a lighten up but i was pretty happy with the focus and level of motion. I have reduced the sizes and quality a bit for bandwidth purposes but some feedback from you blokes would be good (more in the way of composition tips than "this one is good/shit")

Its my first time shooting cars and i have had this D40x for about 3 months now, using manual settings for the last few weeks only. I had a lot of fun though, its a great challenge to try and get the drifting in focus and crisp without making the shutter speed so fast as to lose the movement.

Can someone here recommend a digital camera that is somewhat user friendly for someone ol'school photography orientated?

Sully

the new digital slr's work pretty much exactly the same as the old slr's. difference is that all your settings come up nicely on a screen or through the viewfinder and you can look at how rubbish or brilliant the pic is that you just took.

if you've learnt on slr's then i'd be avoiding point and shoot cameras and going for a dslr. anything from nikon or canon will do you well. if you don't want to fork out for a new one then there's plenty of second handies going around on ebay for a nice price. they're all good

the only thing i suggest is to get the best body you can afford and then hold onto it. the base level lenses aren't really worth keeping and i honestly wouldn't bother with the twin lens kit. the long telephoto isn't all that sharp in the kits. the enthusiast kit is worth it though. the lens is a step up and usually has a good zoom range.

i would buy a second hand 30d or even a 20d over a new 400d if you're looking at canons. it's a more intuitive system and it just feels better to use. takes better pics too!

rx7, spent a week in london, week snowboarding in chamonix, 4 days in rome, 2 days in paris, 4 days in amsterdam, 2 days in brugge with day stops in geneva and brussels

chamonix was pretty cool but we didn't get fresh until the last day, rome and london were boss, amsterdam was way too much fun and very very pretty, can't wait to get back there
brugge was extremely pretty as well, although all the restaurants have a weird mussel fixation

ninja not sure if the Canons have it but id assume so, is grid lines, there is a button you can bind to do what you want on the D80 and above bodies which a lot of people have to do a DoF preview or toggle grid lines, is really great for making sure horizons are straight :)

im gunna add a few, nothing really special photo wise, but they were both hard to get style of photos:

that one with the car lights, it'll work better if you put the camera on a timer and make sure that you're moving when the shutter opens and try to keep a constant speed otherwise you'll get a ghost of the car like you've got there. my other suggestion is to go for greater depth of field so everything is in focus. it still looks good though

your sky shot has a blue and a red dot, Dead pixels or hot pixels, apparently with the 5ds if you chuck it on long exposure for 15minutes it fixes it somtimes otherwise you can send it back for warranty if it bothers you that much.

I just got back from a fishing trip to the southwest (yallingup). Unfortunatly the swell was massive due to a big storm.

I went down to canal rocks for a look and took some pics of the boat ramp getting hit with waves. Made for some good b&w pics ;)

hell yeah

is that fog over the water, or just the effect of the water over a long exposure shot?

GA70TT
06-06-2008, 07:00 PM
slow shutter speed makes the water look that way. Iam only using a D40X, iam still not 100% with it, but i can generally figure out what iam doin. Also helps when you have a tri-pod

should have made it a little quicker to get more of the water in..but meh :)

took this one aswell
