I always have the IS switched on and with any big telephoto lens you get benifits from using the I.S. imo, and at 2.8 just means you can shoot in even lower light hehe.
For lower light i turn on the high ISO setting to 3200.
I was able to take shots in underground limestone caves in the dark with no tripod. The only problem is noise, but its acceptable to a certain degree. You decide for yourself :)
heres an example:

nice shot man, Dont have any really slow shutter speed shots from the 300mm cept for test shots took when first got it haha :p got few other shots though, I wanna use it at drift event!.
shot at low shutterspeed, was testing lens out hah. no sharpening.

300mm, f/2.8. 1/50th. iso 3200.
Thats a decent clear shot for 3200ISO.
My next lense is a Sigma 10-20mm F?

first time out with my new camera, so excuse the overall quality.
Need to work out the ISO settings to help with some grainyness i think.
Criticism or tips welcome, note i'm only using a cheap bridging camera (Canon Powershot SX100IX), and havent touched any of the manual settings yet.

Lonewolf, everyone has to start somewhere so they aren't bad shots if you can learn from them. If you have used the "Auto" settings, this will adjust the ISO settings.
My suggestion is for this type of shooting, go full manual, set the exposure on BULB, ISO - start at 300, F-stop F10 and press the button for approx 20 secs (a remote trigger is really handy for timed exposures).
Have a look at the result and then start changing one thing at a time. Firstly the exposure. Changing the ISO will result in a brighter photo, but if you go too high will result in grain.
This pic was taken at F10, 20 secs, ISO 200 (excuse the dirty lens spot)
http://biante12.com/misc/perthafterdark/images/DSC_8774.jpg
This one was F10, 18.8 secs ISO 500
http://biante12.com/misc/perthafterdark/images/DSC_8776.jpg
Definitely delve into manual for night shooting, with a digital camera at least you can take 100's of shots and throw (delete) the bad ones. It's all about experimentation. I still don't get it right, but at least its fun.

just wondering why you went with a faster shutterspeed in the second one and higher iso? I always use lowest iso possible and just raise the shutterspeed on 5d.

was a night of pure experimentation and trying different things not trying for the perfect shot. Thought they would come in handy someday to show the difference between settings. Since he mentioned ISO settings, thought I'd show him the difference> I did mention to change exposure time first.
The second shot makes for a great Orton Slide Sandwich

For best affects, a brighter image is needed
ELUSIV

Orton effect is really cool, but yeah like you said need a brighter image to get the real "dreamy" state.
Advice wise check out places like www.slrgear.com to find out where your lens performs best at, which apertures its going to produce the best results, while some lenses can go all the way to f32 its probably not a good idea as thats usually where the most difraction will occur. So find the balance between lowest iso, and then the required shutterspeed/aperture to correctly expose the photo but its always advisable to stay away from the extreme apertures of your lens unless absolutely necessary. With ISO use the lowest possible iso you can get away with, and in your camera options make sure you have the long exposure noise reduction to on. Keep in mind that the longer the exposure the hotter the sensor will become hence the more noise the image will contain.
Keep up the good work tho guys! :)

some helpful advice, thanks biante12.
Experimentation is the go, need to do some daytime work too where light levels probably arent as big an issue.
Also remember no DSLR here, so lenses etc cant be changed, and only has the basic functionality that i can manually set (and some pre-set modes).

aah ok, well just have to use trial by error really, because non-dslr cameras have much smaller sensors they are much more prone to noise so its definately worthwhile sticking it on the lowest ISO setting possible and using noiseninja to correct afterwards, but have fun if you outgrow it you can become poor like the rest of us car and photo enthusiasts, the worst possible 2 hobbies to have @ the same time :hahano:

Just checked out the manual for your camera, while it's not an DSLR, it's still pretty powerful. You have full manual mode and from the menu you can select ISO Auto on/off which means you can manually set the ISO. Page 36 of the manuals where you need to start to find all the good bits

yeah photoshop can be good for fixing things up if they aren't quite right especially on the entry level dslr's, i found with my 350d i had to hot the colours up quite a bit. now with the 30d and a lot more knowledge on board i hardly ever use it

Photos are never perfect straight out of the camera regardless of how good you are, to get the best possible image processing is always necessary. RAW is the best format for any camera that can do it as it has no effects of in-camera processing and Adobe RAW converter is the way to go as you get a heap of adjustment options that either arent available when you are editing a jpeg or they are not as effective. Made a screeny of the controls, its worth playing around with them to see what is having what effect, i would recommend not fiddling with the brightness, clarity or vibrance sliders. Clarity is better dealt with by using an unsharp mask :)
Also forgot to add that you can correct lens distortions and fix CA's (purple fringing) in photoshop too which are the two most common artifacts lenses are subject too.

Cheers. umm can't remember the street name, but it was one of the three roads that runs off King Edward road in Innaloo (it was about 5 shops down the road, on the right - if heading towards the city). Sorry cant be more exact than that.

The second pic? That camera only shoots in JPEG. Only thing I did was resize and up the shadows a tad, because the white roof was a little washed out. Colours are very rich straight off this thing.

Decent effort! I also assumed it was two separate layers blended together, as that's the most conventional method. Did well not to get you closing the bonnet in the shot.

Went to grab the mail today and got showered by honkey nuts from a crap load of Black Cockatoos, ran inside to grab the camera and got some photos. Ive definately got a new found respect for bird photographers. Birds have to be the biggest pains in the asses, brances getting in the way, they never stay still, wind makes everything swing/move so its hard to get focus right, branches/leaves shadow the sun giving exposure problems. If there are any bird photographers out their my hat goes off to you!
All taken with Nikon D80 and 70-300 VR, all are crops and most are at 200-270mm (the weak/softest point of the lens) so i was pretty happy. Did usual photoshop corrections, mainly dealt with exposure issues, adjusted contrast/saturation/black levels a little and unsharp mask (Radius 2.0 @ 70%).

Cheers man,
Sorry but what is HDR? Is that similer to hue/saturation?
Sully
05-08-2008, 01:20 PM
hdr is high dynamic range. it involves a lot of photoshop cheating but it does let you get a lot more colour, contrast, and detail from your pics. i personally don't use it though because unless you're ridiculously good with it the pictures take on a really unnatural feel. just look like they've been played with.
when i convert something to black and white i usually desaturate it almost all the way then add some contrast and darken it a touch.
ELUSIV
05-08-2008, 06:54 PM
I really like HDR that isnt overdone.
Can be done in two ways, the best way is to use the bracketing function on your camera to take a series of underexposed, properly exposed and overexposed photos. 3 (one over, one under, one properly exposed), 5 (two over, two under, one proper) and 7 (three over, three under and one proper) are the most common ways of doing it. Easiest way is to dial in different EV values, so say -1 EV, 0 EV, +1 EV for 3, or for 7 you may use less increments as there are more photos, -1 EV, -2/3 EV, -1/3 EV, 0 EV, +1/3 EV, +2/3 EV, +1 EV or whateva really suits.
The other way of getting a series of images is to have your properly exposed image then use photoshop to overexpose and resave as a new file, and underexpose and save as another new file then use photomatix to make the HDR image. The dynamic range will never be as high as if you bracket it however as you have seperate distinct images, but it can be a cheat way of extracting more dynamic range out of only one photo you may have so it may be your only alternative.
Some over the top ones which actually look good (these are not mine btw):

50mm f1.4 from Canon and Nikon are absolutely steals. Awesome image quality for such a low price, i checked ebay quickly and $450 seems fair, most around the high $300 mark new on ebay plus postage. Does Canon do international warranty? I know Nikon does which helps that way you can buy your lenses from anywhere and if you have a warranty issue you can deal with Nikon Australia.
