View Full Version : 04 Legacy GT and E85
Couple of quick questions,
1.Is it safe to run E85 in a completely stock 04 JDM Subaru Legacy GT?
2.If yes is there any benefits in doing so?
3.Which turbo did this model come out with?
Cheers.

Can i ask why would you want to run E85 on a stock car?

Why not, just as much to gain as anyone else.
Cooler running temps + higher octane will make a nice power difference if tuned to suit.

Benefits are that it starves
Of detonation which means more timing and boost can be dialed in which in turn means more power, down side is normally you would need a bigger fuel pump and injectors not to mention the cost of e85. I'm fairly sure (if it's a 2l motor) uses a vf38 twin scroll turbo, you will probably make a reliable 250 hp at all 4 wheels.

If fuel pump, lines, and injectors are upgraded - Then new ecu/tune to suit, then with a stock turbo you will be able to run it to the max of its efficiency range - and be able to run more advanced timing.
Expensive exercise for a stock car, not worth it IMO.

It's a twin scroll turbo so your not going to get that shove when it comes onto boost.the twin scroll provides a for more progressive and torquey power curve ( almost no lag)
Ok thanks guys, just to clarify this is my uncle's car who lives in Melbourne and there is a station around the corner that stocks the stuff, the car will remain untuned and fuel system left stock at this stage as he can't see the value in it.From further research JDM maps are more aggressive then Australian delivered stock so would the ECU be able to take advantage of the higher octane over the current fuel (Shell Optimax) a little in terms of earlier spool, economy and power?
Yeah. This is a false economy.
E85 is great if you have reached the end of pump fuel's ability. Its Getting even more expensive, You use atleast 40% more. It will eat the rubber fuel lines. The stock 440cc injectors need to be changed.
It attracts moisture. So if you dont plan on driving it for a period of time, the tank must be drained. Otherwise it turns to jelly.
The turbo is either a TD04H if Manual, or a VF38 is Auto.
No the ecu wont pick up the fact its running on e85 and take advantage. It will certantly ruin the car's A/F sensor and the oxygen sensor too.
You really need it retuned. But the stock ecu can take maybe 30% E85 till it reads too lean. By then the inectors would be maxxed.
Unless the car really needs it. why do it.

Alright thanks for that i'll tell him to stick to Optimax.
