hello gents, i'm looking at relocating to Melbourne, so i was wondering if anyone on here has done the same thing? as advice would be greatly appreciated.

How much does it costs firstly, just to transfer clothes, and find someone where inner city to live, i will seek employment whilst there but what im wondering is the living cost and apartment rental pricing.

how easy is work to obtain over there? im currently a service advisor, but also have my mechanics ticket.

has anyone done this and held regret about it?

thankyou.

Had two mates move over in recent years. One (who after 3 years there recently moved to Broome) thought it was the best thing he ever did (work sent him there for a few weeks - he ended up staying). Rented a 2-bedroom apartment (no car bay) in Southbank ~50m up form the Casino. If I recall it was just as much as a similar place here, maybe a fraction less. Public transport is awesome - tram stop right outside, 1min into city.

Another mate moved into Fitzroy area, can't recall where/how much. Once again, best move he made, but quickly got into over $30k in debt from eating out every night, socialising, being too hipster etc. Can understand that in a way - such a lively place every night - temptation to eat out would be there all the time if you lived inner city.

Can't comment on work however.

Unless you absolutely have to.. Don't fucking do it.

I've been back 3 years and I've had enough, I'm moving back to Kalgoorlie in a month.

I gets down to between 2 and 5 degrees overnight, It fucking rains all the time and it's fucking multiculturalism on crack.

Inner city living is ok, Parking is fucked.
Docklands or Southbank start at about $400/week for a 1br with a car space. St Kilda about $250/week for a small 1br shitter, somewhere reasonable $320+. Richmond about $350/week
As for moving costs, We sent 1/2 a container from Kal over and it was about $3,000.

Living cost is similar to Perth - possibly a little more although Corbz will be more help here.

Work should be reasonably easy to find but IMO the average wage is lower than Perth but reasonable money can still be made it's just not as easy to come by.

Hey Brus,

Numbers may be a bit off due to crappy memory but will do my best.

For 5 pallets worth of gear, it cost roughly $1800 through wridgeways. Downside was they required it all 3 weeks before delivery date.

We grabbed an apartment in St. Kilda (brand-new) a bit expensive, but nice nontheless. 2bd with secured carpark. I like the area at Day time, few prostitutes and junkies around the back streets at night. Never felt unsafe or anything though. When our lease is up here, we're moving over to south yarra / richmond way.

If you're living in the city fringe area you can easily get away without having a car. Trams are frequent and go just about anywhere or atleast to a train station to get out to the 'burbs.

I personally think living costs are about the same, a little more than Perth. But its really hard to compare as there is nothing that really stands out as more expensive/cheaper. Car insurance is more expensive, yet cars are slightly cheaper. Fuel is all over the place. Tolls are a little exxy...

RMX is on the money in regards to Rent figures. I did note, there are plenty of shared living opportunities on gumtree though. We came over about a month prior to moving here to secure a place, i dare say you will almost find it impossible gettting a place without being here first or making a visit.

Employment - I have no clue. Recruitment would be your friend.

I loved living in Perth, I moved here for better opportunity... not because I didn't like the state. In saying that, I love Melbourne. There is a lot more todo here, I find its super friendly, can eat out late, wet weather wont hesitate anyone from going out. Traffic situation is a little annoying... hearing perthies whine about their fwy's is entertaining :D. I could never see myself moving back to Perth unless I was forced business wise.

Just got back from 5 days there - caught up with Corbz and a few other ex Perthies - all of them said you will need an initial outlay of at least 10k to do it.

I stayed in Balwyn North, fairly nice suburb 20-40min from city (depending on traffic)

It is great for showing how Perth is blatantly behind the times in terms of food and liquor laws etc, but much much much more relaxed to live in. Eating out is cheap compared to Perth, didnt really go food shopping so cant comment on that. Fuel is cheaper, but tolls and rego would suck up the difference. No point owning a modified car in the inner areas though, you would never use it.

Clothes homewares etc are all cheaper and in great abundance.

Victoria is compliance by fear - you cant go 500m without a camera in the inner city area, or 100m without some sign telling you what you must do. But with 4 times the people we have, with less Police than WA, it is the only way youll make it work.

Tolls are pricey, but what value do you place on your time? Culturally, so much to do and see. I could of spent another week there easily and still been flat out busy.
