have just bought another 4runner that has had an 2.8L diesel engine conversion done. The car came with a 2.4L turbo diesel in it but the previous owner has fitted the 2.8 and driven it till it got defected for a cracked windscreen and a tail light out..... its been 7-8 years since i took a car over the pits so have no idea what is needed for the engine conversion to be licensed. is it as easy as rocking up with the 2.8 and plead ignorance? the engines look identical except the "new" engine hasnt got a turbo hanging off it. will it need to have brakes done or anything to account for the 400cc increase or because the engine is from a hilux (LN106) and this car is australian delivered it wont matter?

thanks in advance

matt

just done a little more research and seen that 4runners were released in australia with the 2.4, 2.8 and 3 Litre V6 petrol. so being that the 2.8 is an original engine for the 4runner (not this specific car) it shouldnt matter at all. they are all identical in every way apart from the differing engine and trans combos.

pretty sure if its under 25% increase nothing else is required, but that may have been QLD regs.

The problem you will have is that the engine number isnt going to match up with their records and thats where it could get tricky... best outcome is you only have to fill out a form of change of engine number(since they came with the 2.8 in oz anyway) worst case they will send you away for engeneers certification which is a head fuck and a long head fuck at that

Go to the pits and present it in a road worthy condition. Tell them you have changed the motor for an original option. Complete change of eng number form and have the new capacity put on your rego papers. Should be straight forward provided the cars up to scratch overall.

Too easy. Thanks guys. Doesn't look to need touch work. More of a tidy up than anything.

Maybe even give dpi a call before you go down there... save yourself 90 bucks if they say no

If the engine is in the same family for that chasis denomination you shall have no issue.

Im curious if this still applies if the car is not regoed?

I have a shell i will be transplanting a B16 into, now engine size is the same 1.6l, the EG chassis came with a variation of this motor. still called a B16 i have looked into the regulations about changing engines and the like.

Does any one know the rules about unregoed cars though.

Will i be ok to do the swap and obviously have the car road worthy and then just roll up to the pits and rego the car as normal or is there more of a process to go through?

Any help is appreciated. even a who to call to get clarification would be good. as i dont have faith in calling the licensing centre as their knowledge is usually limited.

P.S sorry to hijack your thread.

if the engine came out in that car at one stage or another, then you just need to do the engine change form...basically updates their reords to show you have a new eng number / capasity change. might afect your rego if the engine size goes up...maybe, im vague here.

the brakes are nothing to do with the vehicles power. its about the weight. if changing engine did not affect the vehicles Kerb/rolling weight then you dont have to make changes to the braking system - thats what the dpi told me last time i enquired about putting a 3l into a s13.

AFAIK if the engine is from the same family engine that your already have, just newer technology you can get away with it...
you will need to do all the paperwork and fill in the modification approval form, as they will properly pick it up @ the pits...unless the engines look identical, or you get someone who knows allot about those cars.

Ended up taking the engine out to transplant it to my other car. Too much hassle getting it over the pits. Will do an engine change form when I get round to it. Thanks again guys.
