Hi guys im rebuilding my R154 and managed to bend a 12ton press while putting the input shaft bearing on. Im looking to borrow/rent a press to finish the main shaft and counter shaft bearing. Should take 2 hours or so.

Input shaft bearing should not be that hard to put on, something doesn't sound right.
I would check that it is going on square, usually you can just tap them on with a pin punch that's how easy it should go on.

Are you sure? It went on perfectly square. The press was an el cheapo brand but should have been up to the task, the TRSM advises a 10ton press minimum but most guys say a 20ton when they are doing them. either way the input bearing is on now, i just need to do the syncros on the main shaft and one bearing on the counter shaft.

Any burs? Wrong part? Sounds like way too much force as the others stated. Cross reference old bearing number with new one. Should be stamped on the bearing.

Old bearing and new bearing are the exact same. Pressing it off was alot of force as well.
No burs at all everything looks mickey mouse inside the box

Whats the repair manual say? Or maybe speak to a gearbox place and ask. Can you freeze shaft etc?

Repair manual is linked. I think I found the problem. The shaft lip was sitting on the edge of the blocks so it was crushing the corner of the blocks while the bearing was going in which bent the lower beams of the press. Shaft is fine luckily.

Ill have to make up new rails that have wider section for the main gearbox shaft so all good.

Sweet. Read the manual and no mention out of anything ordinary.

Good luck with the rest of it.

Mine was a bitch to get apart.. flexed a cheap press. Pressing back together wasnt as bad though.

Jig didn't work at all. Press is royally screwed. If anyone has access to a press with 120mm between the rails can you see if I can borrow it please.

Can you turn the main shaft over and put a piece of pipe over the main shaft onto the gear and press from the input shaft end, just make sure you use a socket over the end of the inner input bearing surface, they can crack easily when pressed.

I dont have any pipe big enough, all i got here is 3". I need a minimum of 120mm to get around the lower gears, i may just pay a transmission shop to do the main shaft and then i can assemble the rest

UPDATE!!!

i ended up modifying the two beams by cutting a box section. At first i was a bit wary that they would bend. Then BAM it worked. Made a mighty bang when the gear finally moved XD
