View Full Version : EGR and cleaning your MAP/MAF on Ford Rangers
Hope this isnt old news or has been posted before.
I was having some boost issues with my Ranger after the Manta upgrade, it ended up being the MAP sensor not working due to excessive crap build up due to the EGR valve this is apparently typical in diesels with this stupid setup, im not sure what other 4x4s are set up like the Ranger but the pic is what it looked like (pic is from another Ranger but mine was the same if not worse)

After cleaning it and the MAF with CRC MAF Cleaner the car now goes great and gets around 25psi on full noise. My Ranger has only done 50, 000 bugger knows how long its been like that but ive heard they get build up from 5000kms!!! i have since disconnected the EGR.

I just do mine every service only adds a few minutes to the job
I had no idea it could get so mucked up in such a short amount of time! its a pretty shit set up, my mates Navara is way better with im guessing the same emission results.

EGR blank is the first thing I did to my Wildtrak, literally within the first 100kms. Then get a catch can and you will have a very clean intake.
All new diesels do this, if you think that plug is bad, take your manifold off, it'll be gunked up big time.

Who was the moron that decided diesels need EGR? I think the days of 500,000+km are over for diesel engines with all the emission bullshit they add.

I tried an egr blank on my PK just kept throwing a code..

fozzy sometimes people need to drill a small hole in the egr blank plate on some models just a 5mm hole in center.. reduces egr gasses but lets sensors work ..

Yep tried that.. By the time I got a hole that stopped coding might as well of not had an EGR blank..
There must be a way of tricking the EGR sensor?? mine has the fault light but it doesn't effect the performance but the light very annoying.

If the ECU is looking for a constant input you could replace the sensor with a resistor that matches, if the ECU looks for a variable input that wont work.
Im pretty sure its variable, i took it apart and it looks like it reads air flow passed the sensor inside, venting it to atmosphere like a screamer and blocking the end of the plenum would work but who knows what that would sound like from an EGR! probably terrible

Long time listener, first time poster, so g'day. Might pay to have a read through this regarding EGR blocking.
http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=118&t=99451. Basic run down, people have tried lots if ways to stop the check engine light, no 'real' solution yet after several years. Many people have now had their cars tuned and the EGR turned off.
I ended up just getting mine turned off in the ECU. I kept cleaning mine every 2/3000kms, every time it was filthy, but now it's very clean every time. Will still put the EGR blank in, just to completely eliminate the build up. But after driving across Aus ~12000kms, it was pretty well clean.
Thank for your post the MAF issue I'm having is driving me nuts!! We're did you go to get your stock ecu remapped?? I want to go mafless.

I still retained the MAF with the tune, as I've never had issues with it. It's always been really clean and seems to be functioning as it should. I used a bloke on the Aussie 4wd Ranger page on FB. His name is Christian Patrold, he is based in Melb but flies over here to tune bulk cars. I think he even tuned a turbo diesel Porcshe for house of power. He works in conjunction with ECU west also. Hope that helps mate
It does help more than you can imagine, my MAF was fine standard but since the Manta plug in i have im running around 30psi possibly more but the gauge stops so im not sure, the MAF is causing a limp mode under load like going up hills or towing something, hopefully going MAFless will solve it. cheers.

OK well that now has been sorted!! i spoke to Darren at ECU West and he will come out and re map the standard ECU they reckon the Mantas are shit for newer model cars, fingers crossed ill post when i have it done with the results. Thanks again for posting otherwise id still be pulling my hair out!!!

Most if not all of the plug in chips increase rail pressure, which works for lots of cars sure, BUT if you can net the same if not better gains by remapping/tuning, which also works out to be more cost effective, then for me it's a no brainer. I'm very happy with the low rpm torque increase, and slightly better economy too, I'm consistently getting 580-600kms out of a tank around town, tank being 60litres. They are actually 70l but I have only ever managed to put 58l in after driving with the fuel light on for a while haha
