Awesome! Although I'm usually holding up the tail of the ladder, it's still a heap of fun.
^ The cumulative PP handicaps will make life hard for the quicker guys as the night goes on.

Is it worth buying a ps3 just for this game? And does it take long to unlock cars to join your races? Or can you just buy them?

Worth buying Ps3 for this game? Probably, as a PS3 and G27 can be had pretty cheaply nowadays.
Does it take long? You'd have to put some hours in to get enough coin to buy or unlock cars by Thursday. If you played the game a couple of hours a night over a fortnight you should be in a reasonable position.

I am yet to plug in the internet into the PS3 let alone play a few hours a night ATM.
Race car prep., getting settled into new house and a baby due in 4 weeks, my aim of playing again and running dead last is fading.....

I may have a chance of doing well right at the end of the night :)
Update 1.05 went live last night. (100ish MB) Mostly UI enhancements. But they have now changed the qualifying time limit to a minimum of 5 minutes (previous could set as low as 1 min).
So I'll set the qualifying time limit so you can compete 2 or 3 full laps. (depending on track length)

Drift trial now available in online!
Will be in Melb for f1 so will have to miss this week.. there goes my worst round buffer :(
Drift trial now available in online!
Can't believe it's taken this long to have online drift trials.
Only issue is you can't change the room type from race to drift once the lobby is created. You have to close the room and start another one.

I've updated the online points site to include the Championship points. The points can now be calculated immediately after the last race.
Also, the performance point handicaps have increased by 50% for this Thursday.

I will be late if online at all on Thursday, have to work late! Should be a few straight rear bumpers then!

Anyone know how to set up the DMZ with Bob Lite? no luck with google so far.
I dont think it has an easy DMZ option
You can however set up a static ip address on the PS3 and then set a port forward rule which opens all ports to that ip.
http://screenshots.portforward.com/routers/iiNet/BoB_Lite/Port_Forwarding.htm
Set the inbound port to 1-65535, set type to TCP/UDP, set ip address to the one you assigned to the PS3

Just a few clarifications:
Love tapping ok? As long as you don't force them off the track (?)
No performance modifications - including mods that don't affect PP ie gearbox mods, lowering the car
PP handicap, does this apply after each race?
Just a few clarifications:

Love tapping happens. But if you 'tap' them off the tarmac then you should re-address the situation.
See following example: http://youtu.be/dkg6TnLSGVc?t=5m42s
This was because I followed too closely into braking area and a small network lag spike made a small tap into a large punt. The slipstream setting we use allows you to keep up with the car in front without between corners without needing to follow them bumper to bumper.
You can change wheels (including diameter), paint car and paint wheels. That's it.
Even a small change to settings will make the car ineligible. To make matters worse, the game cannot tell your what you've changed to make the car ineligible. Safest method is to buy a fresh car and mod wheels/paint.
PP handicap applies after each race. The online points tables is updated after each race. It also lists the max PP you can use for the following race in the first column. I also read out the PP levels for those that don't have access to the points table. You need to adjust the PP level yourself by adjusting the power limiter in the car settings menu.
I will generally explain everything over the chat during the course of the evening.

On again at 8:30 tonight. Plleeeeaasssee make sure you have the DMZ setup as per the original post.
In related news there's a new patch coming next week which will include a data logger analyser thing:
http://www.gran-turismo.com/jp/news/00_3793638.html
So basically if you own GT6, and a Toyota FT86, and your fit that FT86 with a 'Sports Driver Logger', and you live in close proximity to Suzuka, Fuji or Tsukuba in Japan, and you run some laps with your FT86, you will be able to download the logged data to GT6 and watch a replay re-created in game.
Good to see Polyphony Digital have their priorities right.

I will start this by saying I have no fucking Idea about this shit!
Whirlpool one gives me an error on the DMZ setting for BOB and fucked if I know why. BOB tells me that there is an error for the public address.
The second link makes no sense to a DH like me.
If i can't get it then I will revert to old settings, if i glitch then you can tell me to fuck off out of the room. It might be weeks before my IT guy comes back and I am not calling him out for a game setting. I literally do not have any idea when it comes to computers.

Is it just standard GT6 you're playing, no specific DLC add-ons?

No paid released yet but there have been a few hefty update patches released. Another is due in the next couple for days too.
You need to get the first couple I licences before you can even play online. Try the seasonal events for quick cash.
300MB patch was released a couple of days ago. Make sure you get online early to download it if you haven't already.
Something to try for those still with connection issues.
Set you DNS settings on the PS3 to Google's DNS servers

OK last round moved to WEDNESDAY next week.
I also want everybody to set their networks up like this:
PS3 Static IP (as per guide in original post)
Put that Static IP Address in your routers DMZ (as per guide in original post)
AND
Disable UPnP on PS3
Set DNS servers on PS3 to the following Google servers:
http://i.imgur.com/VxFrKLf.jpg
I have a suspicion that the PS3 is still trying to use UPnP and it's causing the connection issues some players have.
There's no need for UPnP if the PS3 if in the DMZ.

Gran Turismo Network Setup
Follow all the steps in this guide to set up your network for playing Gran Turismo (or any PS3 game for that matter).
Looks like a lot, but should only take about 10 to 15min to complete.
http://i.imgur.com/E4m69nQ.png
On your PC, Click ‘Start’
In the search box above type:
cmd
and hit enter
http://i.imgur.com/JFKecXs.png
A black box will pop-up. In this box type:
ipconfig
and hit enter
This will display your current network settings.
The comment you’re looking for is the “Default Gateway”
Write this number down. You’ll need it later.
Listed as 192.168.1.254 in the example below but yours may be different.
Other common examples include 192.168.1.1 and 10.1.1.1
http://i.imgur.com/0Ba7xlg.png
Close the black box.
Open your web browser and type your Default Gateway number (that your wrote down) into the address bar. This is the IP address for your router.
(eg 192.168.1.254)
Enter your routers username and password when prompted.
If you do not know your username and password then try here:
http://portforward.com/default_username_password/
Normally, when a device in your home connects to the router for internet access (wired or wireless), the router will assign the connecting device an IP address. The router will also make sure it does not assign an IP address that is already being used by another device on your network. This means the router is running a DHCP server.
Look for the DHCP Server option in your routers configuration. May look something like this:
http://i.imgur.com/FX3Y7W8.png
In the above example the router’s DHCP server range is 192.168.1.1 up to 192.168.1.40
This means the router can automatically assign up to 40 different IP addresses. This range varies from router to router. We want to make sure we use an IP address for the PS3 that is outside this range.
In this example we will use 192.168.1.50 (but any IP address that ends with 41 to 253 will be OK in this example)
Look for the DMZ option in your routers configuration.
For example;
http://i.imgur.com/dvjH2xM.png
Enter the chosen IP address into the DMZ option (192.168.1.50 in the example)
‘Apply’ or ‘Save’ the changes to your router.
Good idea at this point to power cycle the router, log back into it and check the DMZ address setting has been saved.
http://i.imgur.com/5tzsSjx.png
On your PS3 from the main XMB Menu select ‘Settings’
Scroll down and select ‘Network Settings’
Select ‘Internet Connection Settings’
A prompt will appear explaining your need an Ethernet cable connected or wireless available to proceed.
Select ‘OK’
Select ‘Custom’ method
Chose your connection type. Wired or Wireless
Use Ethernet (Wired) if at all possible.
Select Manual Settings
Select Auto-Detect (Check FAQ at the bottom of more troubleshooting info)
Select Manual IP address setting.
At this screen you will need to enter the following:
IP Address – The IP address you set in the router’s DMZ
Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0
Default Router – The ‘Default Gateway’ IP address you noted early in this guide.
Primary DNS – 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS – 8.8.4.4
http://i.imgur.com/CjqzKw8.png
Select Automatic MTU
Select Do Not Use Proxy server
(If you are using a proxy, by all means enter the details of course. If you’re not sure if you’re are using a proxy, you probably don’t ;)
Select Disable UPnP
With DMZ set you don’t need UPnP. So make sure the PS3 doesn’t still try to use it.
You should then be shown a summary of your settings. Click X to proceed.
Your can now run an internet connection test. (Click x)
Your summary should look like this (although connection speeds will vary)
http://i.imgur.com/mLUUiDF.png
That’s it. You should be good to go.
FAQ
My PS3 still randomly drops out of the game and PlayStation Network (PSN)
You may see the notification in the top right of screen pop-up saying you have logged out of PSN, or a message like ‘An Ethernet cable is not connected’. It will also commonly reconnect also most immediately. This is likely due to the console briefly dropping local connectivity between the PS3 and the router.
Go through you’re your PS3 network settings again, only this time manually select your Speed and Duplex. Most home networks will be safe with 100BASE-TX Full-Duplex.
Why do I need to assign an IP address outside the DHCP server range?
Two reasons:
1. Some routers (depending on model or firmware) will not allow traffic to go unimpeded through the DMZ if the IP address is with the DHCP server range. The router may let you set an IP address within the DHCP server range in the DMZ without complaints, but the router (unbeknownst to the user) may not actually apply that rule internally and traffic to the DMZ may be blocked.
2. To ensure it’s impossible for the router to assign another device on your network the same IP address as the one the PS3 will always try to use.
What else can I do to improve connection stability
- Turn off/disable other network devices. You don't need your Significant Other downloading torrents or streaming video while you're playing.
- Upgrade your router firmware. Can assist with resolving router specific bugs.
- Power cycle the router immediately before playing online.
Can everybody who is joining tomorrow please ensure UPnP on the PS3 is DISABLED
With the DMZ setup it's not needed, but I suspect the game may still be attempting to use it which could be the cause of connectivity issues between some players.
Also, if you're looking for a small FPS increase then change the Image Quality setting to 'Sharpen'
From the main GT6 menu press the Start button.
- Options
- Display
- Brightness and Image Quality
- Image Quality
- Set to 'Sharpen'
Seems to disable the AA so it'll look a little jaggier, but less muddy at the same time.
Another trick is to go into the PS3 main display settings and disable 1080i and 1080p. This will force the game to use 720p and pick up a few more frames.
I don't personally use it because the image quality trade-off is not worth it IMO. But it will run a little quicker.
Some video from last week; (http://youtu.be/fK8ocfKJ0CI) http://youtu.be/fK8ocfKJ0CI
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/fK8ocfKJ0CI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Done it all, it'll be good if it works! I was having issues seeing people even with the DMZ.
Done it all, it'll be good if it works! I was having issues seeing people even with the DMZ.
Yeah I had assumed that because the router already listed the PS3's IP address in the DMZ that UPnP wouldn't be a factor. But apparently the PS3 may still be attempting to negotiate port openings and connections to other peer PS3s. There's actually a number of different ports used. Some for establishing the connection to the lobby and other players, some for streaming the players game data during races, some for headset voice communications etc.
I suspect some or all of these port connections are not establishing between certain players. That's why sometimes you can 'see' another player in the lobby, but not on the track. Sometimes you can see the player on track, but cannot hear their voice chat and so on.
By disabling UPnP on the console hopefully it won't even attempt to do the unnecessary UPnP dance as all the ports on the router are already open to and from the PS3 static IP address.
Well done to Alex again for winning last night.
I plan on starting another series in about 3 or 4 weeks. The Senna DLC is likely due next week so hopefully it includes a new track or two.
http://www.mgr.net.au/gt6/series_1/results/round5.gif
http://www.mgr.net.au/gt6/series_1/results/champ.gif
I also fixed the minor bug in the spreadsheet points. Basically if you didn't finished in at least one of the first five races your name wouldn't appear in on the leader board.
I went back through all the rounds to double check points and the only change was voltbite picked up 10 points in round 2.
