Sebastien Loeb was unable to beat the hillcimb record at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, but did set the fastest time of the weekend

Sebastien Loeb's assault on the Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb record ended in a run of 44.6sec, meaning he has failed to beat the course record of 41.6sec set by Nick Heidfeld in 1999.

Loeb, nine times World Rally champion, was at the wheel of the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car, but after a timed run yesterday afternoon told The Telegraph that he would be unable to beat the record because the car's gearing was too short.

It might not have beaten Heidfeld's record time, set in a McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car, but Loeb's attempt did give him the fastest time of the weekend ahead of the Maserati MC12 of Martin Bartels with a 45.82sec run, and the McLaren F1 GTR Longtail driven by Kenny Brack with a time of 47.92sec

Gamer turned racer Jann Mardenborough set a time of 48.05sec at his first Festival of Speed timed shootout.
