View Full Version : Mud Terrains - wide or skinny ?

Seen all sorts of arguments relating to what to get, mainly it's the unit wearing flat brim backwards wearing brigade championing the widest you can get, and the old timers saying the skinny ones are better to break through the slop and get into the harder stuff underneath, citing the army and etc used the pizza cutters that came standard on the troopies and the likes where good enough to do off roading in all conditions in Australia.
I'm looking at a 2nd set of rims with some mud terrains, I'm running 245/16 a/t's at the moment and they suit what I use it for, but would like to hit some muddy areas as well.
Or would something like the Cooper ST Maxx be sufficient for all my needs as my mains et of tyres?
I do mainly road and beach, but would like to do stuff like Harvey and even the powerlines.

I have a set of 285/75/16's in cooper ST MAXX, they seem to grip fairly well in the mud (not as good as the big horns i had) and have faired awesomely in the sand of lancelin and wedge..
I had a set of BFG A/t's before and the ST MAXX are 10x better in the slop, BUT the BFG's were about 5x quiter on the road.

Noise doesn't concern me.
Mate had Bighorns, sidewall got ripped apart by a average rock, was 2 days old, 3 weeks later another just blew the sidewall apart driving on the highway, not really a fan :)

Ah wow haha i had mine for a year or so never got a puncture or rip, i hated the coopers due to them "Scalloping" then replaced my suspension and its gone now. Definately have been a good choice, although i wish i had of gone smaller i struggle a small amount now due to rolling diameter and gearing.

Yeah I've seen bad reviews on just about every tyre, lol
I honestly don't think I'll go wider than 245's, keeps the car light still for the beach and good rolling diameter etc.
Mate is running Summit Mudhogs no problems, been all over the Victorian hills with them, went great done the beach too.
Too many choices :)

The mud hogs are the ones I'm thinking of getting, heard good things and feedback from guys that have had them on for 6+ months and still positive, 340 bucks in 18s is hard to say no to

Stmaxx 285/75/16 here too . Great tyre IMO. Common size is why I have them. Go bush often and want something that is readily available.
As for skinny or fat. I prefer taller skinnier tyres. Tyre diameter is the big thing. Width matters little from my experience.

i have 35inch mudhogs on the jeep... better than the BFG km2's i had on before in all areas.

I have 315/75/16 Cooper STT on the Cruiser, its takes on most things easily. They float on powdery sand, and they cut in to the slop. It does help that I have awesome gearing to match as well as a fuck tone of torque to play with.
Then I've got 275/70/18 Cooper ST MAXX on the Wildtrak, its only been on sand at Lancelin. I'm glad I went the skinny tyre for this one, purely on the basis of rolling resistance on bitumen.
It's not a blanket answer, a piss weak engine will struggle with the resistance of a wider tyre, but the wider tyre could improve off road ability, so you then upgrade the performance to suit. Whilst a skinny tyre might just dig down and not float to well. The 31x10.5x15 Cooper ST we had on the Pajero would dig holes in sand when running 15psi.
what 4by do you have anyways?

It's not a torque monster, but it does go pretty hard fr what it us, I think the sub 2 tonne weight helps it, I probably wouldn't go wider than a 265 anyway.
Cheers, I'll definitely look at the ST MAXX

If your going a second set, then I'd go a 255/85/16 on a 16x7 and get a bit more offset to clearance flex.
Just over 33" tall and 10" wide...
I've seen R50s with 33s and lift and they look pretty neat!

Not keen on a sub frame drop, it's a daily :)
I'm only running 245/65/16's at the moment, 255/85's would give me enough for what I need :)

Does it have an LSD in the rear at least Brett? Cos the grippiest tyres in the world are not gonna do fuck all if ur stuck in the slop with one wheel spinning.
BTW You could easily do Powerlines with your current set up, even in the wet. Harvey/Brunswick i would be more hesitant as its really wet down there at the moment

LOL
I wouldn't even bother if it didn't have an LSD !
It has a H233B, which go good in the front of your junk heaps :)
Can shim it up to make it tighter too, as with the front, which is a R200, which makes it easy, I'll be doing both when I can be bothered.
