As said above that is the full length daytime Malaga stage on the Sunday.
This is the night stage...

Not entered TargaWest (wish I was a grown up with car/budget like B1 & B2 above!), but will be doing the warm up event on Sunday morning on the Riverside Dve stage. Will try do better than P2 that has been my lot for the past two years.
Looking forward to seeing some angry brake rotors on Thursday night at Malaga. Not had a chance to see any of that stage as yet due to being at Riverside Dve Sun morning.

If that Gadget tool turns up to TW and goes postal as per RW, I'm hoping the coppers on duty don't have tasers but instead have to resort to 'lethal force'.
Or were you meaning Inspector Gadget? I get confused so easy.

Turn #28 on the sunday stage might be interesting. They have added an extra 'kink' into the malaga drive section to promote some rear end action.
Most AL members would know that Malaga night stage better than some of the Targa veterans..

Most of the entrants I know are already into Reccy and they are all veterans of targa events
Why is that? If they are experienced at rallying why should they be out doing recce now? We won't do recce until the event is closer and will do the whole event in a weekend.
We do Targa Tas (3 times the competitive distance) in 3 days.
Recce does not equal practice FFS - if you can't get your notes right after 3 runs max you are doing it wrong - a stage like malaga if you have notes is a 1 run over to check at best.

3 days full time Reccy is different to doing a a couple of stages when you can, fitting it in with regular life instead of taking time off to do it
When you are looking at nearly a hour travel each way to get out to Toodyay and Bindoon you soon runout of time

The last thing you want to try and do is memorise the stage. Then you dont listen to the notes, forget a corner and then bang.... Your upside down in a ditch.

So, for those who turn up a little earlier than the Targa cars on Sunday at Riverside drive, the entrant list has been released and it looks pretty tasty. Some likely highlights are:
Gallardo (two drivers - owned by John, who ran the very quick RS6 at RW). Gets driven hard, sounds tits.
Ferrari 328 Twin Turbo (288 GTO Replica) - Luca who owns the [GROUP 4] Pantera should be bringing this out. Insane 288 GTO replica, using a twin turbo 328 motor. Really want to see and hear this, will be as close to a 288 GTO as I will ever get. Bulk dollars spent on this thing getting it to this stage when it was built in the US.
A few very nice Z cars (240/260). Go well and sound tits. Even better, Mad Mike will bring is RB26 engined version out too and he goes well hard.
Mustang Fastback- not sure of which one, but hoping it was the very nice dark blue one that ran at Albany in June.
Genuine Group C Commodore (The Hooley Autospark car for those who remember W'roo in the early 80's). Big flares, wide rims, interior trim, alloy roll cage & drop tank, Great Group C 308 howl - what a V8 should sound like, no slapping of the LS thong here.
XY GTHO + E49 Charger
Bike engined mid mounted suzuki 800 hatch. Sounds great!
Few historic open wheelers
And the probable winner - The 12A PP Rotary sports sedan Fiat 500, ear bleedingly good!
I'll have a go myself come to think of it...
So if you can't make Malaga, get down to Riverside drive from 1000 onwards.

Scrutineering for TW Sunday morning action has been run and won. Winners are (IMHO):
288 GTO Evo? Don't have a genuine 288 GTO? Cut up a 308 (as Ferrari did) and build your own race version, carbon/kevlar everwhere! Yes, those are 335's on the back, mounted on genuine F40 centerlock wheels... Best not as how much just the wheels would be worth. Sounded rather nice idleing around, built twin turbo 328 16V donk and straight through exh. Many 100's thousands spent on this car by the previous owner in US. Blank cheque job, even more than Darkside's RX, or Bucket's unicorn RX, yes, hard to believe I know!

Small factoid for the Group B nerds: Both the 288 GTO and Lancia 037 were created from exsiting cars with mid mounted transverse engined production cars. The green car you see in front of the 288 in the second photo is a Lancia MonteCarlo, which Lancia used to create the 037. Both had the transvers drivelines ditched for a proper longitudinal mid mount engine and trans setup with extensively modified front and rear chassis and bodywork. I personally would very much like to get a MontoCarlo and convert to 037 - there is a mob in NZ that does all the bits (body and chassis).
Pure gold:

Not seen this one before, but looks show car quality.
And, see if you can work out what's so special about the following pic:
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y474/200mphgt40/image_zpsc401ff73.jpg (http://s1276.photobucket.com/user/200mphgt40/media/image_zpsc401ff73.jpg.html)
It's all factory officer... but feeding the twin intakes is a cast-to-look-standard water/air intercooler and there are twin's hiding behind the rear bumper where the mufflers etc were. Now straight through exh from the twins! Yes, should sound 'OK' I guess. John drove it back from Sydney after the conversion. Baller. THis car finished 3rd last year, and I'm expecting a bit of hurry up from it now, to make an understatement.
Can not wait to hear these plus all the others (and grownups in the Targa Cars) screaming down Riverside with the noise echoing off the city!

Weather looks good as can be hoped for. Hope you have binned those tyres you had on at Rallysprint. Go hard lads!
We're ready to go but will be on the sidelines till Saturday as we're only doing the two days. Shame about missing out on Friday stages but some the Saturday ones look good. First proper rally for me so I'll be using this as a learning experience.
As usual, to all antilaggers and friends competing, keep it fun and out of the trees.

Spewing I'm not home. Would have tried to enter into it. But fingers crossed for next year. Won't comply for any class. Try for invitational and just have fun.
Can understand the canning of the John Forrest stage. The cars put huge load on the surface when braking and accelerating and will shift it if it's not bonded to whatever is under it properly, have a look at the bottom of the hill at wanneroo in low light and with car lights on it. There's ripples all the way down, it's just a better laid surface.
It's also why some of the shires no longer want targa on their roads as it's damage them that badly.

Was with Oneten on the Junadrive stretch thursday night.
Could definitely tell the guys with good notes vs the ones without coming into corner 18.
Guessing at the end that Juna straight into the right hander the crappy tape they put up at first wasn't visible enough?
Watched one car go through and then a solid 4-5 cars (Empire evo too lol) get caught out with it afterwards.
We noticed the cones go in after the first lot went through.
Seemed a bit of a over-sight considering the reasonably long straight to right hander...
Plenty of wet pant moments however and nice notes to keep me happy!

This event keeps getting better and better with every year. Maryville Downs Stage was superb.

What happened to Mark at riverside today? Saw him off on his first run, did he come unstuck in the tight carpark section? Phil is right, you can't compare targa spec cars to 'open season' racers. Not to take anything away from Marks efforts. I fully expected him to dominate times at places like Malaga and riverside.
For example, last I heard today, quickest targa car was 1:46 (edit after reading results, 1:43) at riverside. Quickest couple of morning session cars were 1:41 & 1:42. Not a fair comparison.
I was away so missed most if the action this year, but at least made it back for riverside today, which was fun.

I towed marks car home for him and he was gutted, he thinks he either didn't brake hard enough or missed the pedal completely when he went to brake
Other than that targa was a great out come for Team Gti, we crewed for 6 cars got 5 over the finish line with 3 in the top ten and two class wins, One for Simon in Classic Competition with the V8 Capri and the other was Will White in his Evo in Modern Competion

Went and checked it out, Nagle in Evo 7... Looks like he locked up rears before the corner, went sideways into curb on apex of left turn, flew in air about 15m landed and skidded across the road into another curb. Proceeded to bowl over a fence (including ripping a decent post footing straight out of the ground) through some bush and then into a 20" sea container which moved about half a foot and the car bounced back a good 2 meters. Passenger rail snapped from it's mounts and I believe Nagle had concussion and 7 broken ribs. To be honest they are very lucky the sea container didn't hit the drivers door!

I was wondering if it was that car as it seemed a bit unsettled at the Malaga drv / Victoria rd corner.
Next thing we heard over the radio there was a crash.

Looks like a decent shunt, hopefully they recover quickly, as bad as that looks, it'd be a fixable car, I've seen cars a lot worse than that fixed up, looks like the suspension took most of the brunt and the rear 1/4, only thing that'd stop it being a fixer is if the cage is bent..

Mark and Steph having their moment. That barrier they hit certainly got my attention each time around the course Slip of the foot on the brake and it's oh-so-easy to go in.
At least the barrier wasn't too hard on the car from the way it moved so far.

Prepping rally cars is serious business. Mechanical failure can have very significant impact. (Pun intended) You really need to be sure whoever is on the spanners is thorough to the point of being anal and annoying. Not suggesting this is mech fail as I dont the background, but always crawl over my cars with a fine tooth comb looking for anything like a brake line rubbing or too close to a source of heat or anything else that might cause a drama when stressed under race conditions.

Only real moment I had all weekend. I just took too much speed into the roundabout and didn't have anywhere to go when the rear stepped out. Still can't believe the only thing that happened was a small valve on the bottom of the shock got knocked off (which was then rebuilt two stages later by the Galvsport boys on the side of the road).

In-car from mine on Toodyay 2.
I managed to match the times of a few of the Evo boys with about 150hp more than me by carrying a bit more corner speed, but it's still hard to fathom the speed Jonesy must be going considering he was 22 seconds faster than me on this stage. Ridiculous.

Keen to know what were your favourite & least favourite stages over the 4 days in terms of driving experience/enjoyment?
Favourites:
Kalamunda - http://www.targawest.com.au/Portals/0/docs/QTW14/Kalamunda%20Stage_c.pdf
Racecourse - http://www.targawest.com.au/Portals/0/docs/QTW14/Racecourse%20Stage_c.pdf
Toodyay - http://www.targawest.com.au/Portals/0/docs/QTW14/Toodyay%20Stage_c.pdf
Malaga (Day) - http://www.targawest.com.au/Portals/0/docs/QTW14/Malaga%20Stage_c.pdf
Kalamunda is just nuts. You're just going so fast, the road surface is great, and there's good visibility with very few turns on crests where the car might get light.
Racecourse and Toodyay are very similar. Great stages. Not much else to say. They're just awesome.
Malaga (Day) - 64 turns through Malaga industrial area, flat out the whole time. We had to bleed the brakes after each stage (we did it 3 times), and replace the rotors before it. Visibility is great, road surface is consistent, and you can attack almost every corner.
Least favourite (but still good):
Coondle Highlands - http://www.targawest.com.au/Portals/0/docs/QTW14/Coondle%20Highlands%20Stage_c.pdf
John Forrest - http://www.targawest.com.au/Portals/0/docs/QTW14/John%20Forrest%20East_c.pdf
Whiteman Park - http://www.targawest.com.au/Portals/0/docs/QTW14/Whiteman%20Park%20West_c.pdf
Coondle Highlands is actually really good, except the end of it is a FAST left over a crest, so the car gets a bit light, and then the surface changes right on the finish line into loose gravel. Few people had some interesting moments at 150km/h+
John Forrest - Cool course, but unfortunately it looks like they've resurfaced it by pouring a dump truck of blue metal on it and left it as that. The car was just floating around most of the time and it would have been very easy to have a big moment (as some people did).
Whiteman Park - Not a big fan. Most of the corners in the first part of the course tighten over crests which means if you carry too much speed on entry you're just fucked. The surface was also pretty sketchy and incredibly hard on tyres. Probably why ~5 people crashed here on the first day.

This, plus tansverse mid mounted and chain drive. I think Lance used some sort of Alfa/Lancia trailing arm rear suspension as well, since that's his kind of thing. The Poms get into this sort of setup a fair bit for track day thrashers as they've got umpteen superminis to cut up and convert.
'Tis a good thing and gets flogged well hard and often. Approval rating is high from me.

Fairly gutted about not finishing. There's a lot more people involved getting a rally car through an event so when you're the one to fuck up it cuts a bit deep. Of course looking at Iddles' and the Nagel's crashes certainly puts thing back into perspective.
Some of the most fun I've had driving a car in a long time. Despite being probably our worse recce'd and noted stage, Maryville Downs was awesome. Very fast and the roads are in good condition. Hats off the Steve Jones and all the front running guys for their commitment shown through the quick stuff.

Nice Targa mash-up Mark. Love the banter between you and Steph about repeating a stage and pants pooing.
Question time - did you de-boost a bit for Targa? Reason I ask is I fully expected you to smash all on the final City stage. I know you only got one full run in, and may have been going a bit gingerly on the first run (unusually) and no doubt would have gone a bit quicker on runs 2 & 3, but I can't get within 7-8 seconds of you at Kwinana! Wasn't like that for the City stage if the times I think I got were right (only heard over PA, not seen any results for us olde banger types).
We we're a few seconds up on the second run and using mediums instead of softs. Dawdled around first run and was shocked to see we were fastest. I suspect others were not pushing much to make sure they finished. Smart move.

22-08-2014, 09:16 PM
Fair enough. Your idea of dawdling may be a little different than the other 99% I suspect. I couldn't bring myself to brake super late either, not matter how much I tried. Barriers scare me. Nor did I get oppo lock through the intersection cross-over like you did, as the palm trees looked rather nasty at speed.
Seeing as I'll never get close to your times again, let alone faster, I'll ignore all you just said and say it was a fair fight!
Any chance of the front runners (Jones etc) having videos put up online? Some of the speed shown by Brockas and MGR is pretty impressive so it would be interesting to see an onboard of Jones through some of the quicker stuff.
