Been thinking about getting a 4B and been having a look at Wranglers.

does anyone know the go on them? are they any good?

Will most likely only be taking it for beach fishing and the dunes, nothing to intense.

Any help is appreciated.

For the love of god, don't buy a wrangler.
Literally buy anything but a JEEP!

Mate had one and they are complete pieces of festering shit!

2012 models onwards they came out with the 3.6lt pentastar motor and Mercedes auto which moves mine along quiet well.
I get about 14.5lts/100 around town with 33' tyres - it's probably more like 13.8-14.0lt/100 but I haven't recalibrated the speedo since doing the tyres.
Offroad it has been mint - Brake Diff Locks act like lockers to stop free wheel spinning so it goes anywhere you point it just about.
Stock suspension and tyres are woeful and really need to be changed if you want a comfortable ride.
Servicing is a bitch - every 6mnths whilst under warranty.

Prior to 2012 they were a 3.8lt minivan motor - does the job but nothing spectacular from what I've read. Probably want the manual for the 3.8 motor to get some go out of it.

There's a 2.8 diesel as well, probably want the auto as the manual has dual mass flywheel which is/was pretty expensive to replace.

If your planning beach runs, maybe the odd 4WD day out then they're more than up to the task.

Oh and be prepare for retards telling you that you bought a Jeep too - it's fucken hilarious!

Edit - Check AUSJEEPOFFROAD.COM.AU for more info, plenty of threads there.

If you want it for beach/sand work then try get an auto. Makes it a lot easier to keep up momentum while on boggy sand.

they're excellent off road, but beware of older ones, my brother had a TJ and it cost him a hell of a lot of money over time, his was the old 4l straight six, they're generally reliable and have great torque down low, he had issues with the auto and drivetrain stuff... was in an out of the workshop a lot.

yeah I read up about Jeeps being big $$$ and constant visits to workshops thats what made me kind of steer away from them for abit but I took one (auto 2009) for a drive the other day and it's not to bad off roading and for city drives too. Have asked a few friends who have had Jeeps and the other 4B guys and most are 50/50 on them.

right now the 2009 - 2010 model is on the table

There's a reason they are the most modified 4wd in the world, buy your mods from the US, keep up essential maintenance - enjoy.

I've had a CRD auto for a bit over 12 months now. It's been a fantastic car so far. Very capable off road, fuel isn't too bad, the 5-speed auto is faultless.
I class it as borderline when it comes to comfort to use as a daily, but that is subjective I guess.

Parts are cheap if you know where to get them from, if you want to modify, then the sky's the limit, so much potential and parts to get from the US.

I have a 2012 D22 Navara. Not many places where I couldn't get mine in or out. Where the car lacked the winch made up for it.

Car is stock and keeping it that way as its a daily.

9lt 100km.

Well priced.

I have a 2009 D40 Navara.. Goes most everywhere with ease.. get 600km per tank.. Auto.. And apart from the timing chain debacle, they are a good bit of kit..

I'de go Toyota imo.
Hilux or older landcruiser both reliable and more than capable.
Hiluxs mainly destroy clutches and cruiser diesels are quite bulletproof.
Just dont buy a base model!

Hiluxs destroy injectors too, and gunk up their intake manifolds.

Every single vehicle out there has something that you can find that is "unreliable". Just go with whatever drives nicest and suits your needs the best.

Whats your budget like?

Melville and Wangara Jeep both have one Mopar JK8 each at the moment, but cannot imagine they'd be very cheap..

(they look a bit like this, however this one has a lot more mods done to it obviously)

Hilux

They're reliable, but absolute fucking junk cars. Terrible rattles, noisy and uncomfortable as shit, and slow.
The new rangers are much nicer

haha that would be awesome to get but think it would be way out of my price range (30k - 40k Maybe less to save some $$$ for mods), I'll have a browse around with some more 4x4 and see how they go and will check out Melville Jeep some time on the weekend.

If you're just doing beach work don't get a Wrangler. Expensive to run and less space in the back etc. Worked ones make good 4WDs for rock / mud work.

Get a Dual cab ute like a Hilux/Ranger/Dmax/Navara for that price or look at solid bodies like Prado/Pajero/Pathfinder/Patrol. Turbo diesel will be cheaper to run and you'll have heaps more room for gear.

rodent

Less space in the back I'll agree, but still enough for me to fit gazebo, chairs, esky and all the kids crap for a day out down the beach.
The roll bar in the rear load compartment kills storage space abit.

Unfortunately having the aero of a house brick doesn't help and speeds over 100km/h you start to notice it use a bit more juice.

$30-40k should get you a good modded pre 2012 model or a 2012 onwards without much fruit though.

There's plenty of reasons not to buy one. I think you've really got to want one to be able to overlook those reasons and not regret it.

I get angry with mine from time to time, but don't regret it at all.

The main reason i would buy a jeep would be the aftermarket parts available. You can buy an off the shelf full weld on long travel suspension kits, all thebar work you could possibly want as well as engine hop up parts.

Been watching the Off roading show on 73, the amount of shit they can do to a Jeep is awesome, so much support for them.

yeah same, I love how they also go "we're gonna remove these small 37's and put some 44's on this will keep the truck lower but without sacrificing ground clearance"

SMALL 37's WTF!!!

Gay as aids. They are very capable and do have loads of aftermarket stuff available, just be aware that the aftermarket stuff is LHD. This often causee issues. A mate has a heavily modded TJ. He could have a f150 raptor or whatever other 4B he wanted after the amount of breakages and required upgrades he has done.

Toyota fanboy here. Cant go wrong.

Fuck me - just go landcruiser
Grab a 100 series turbo diesel or V8 petrol - never fucking let you down, and are as fucking close to unbreakable as you can get with max room inside

Don't buy a new or expensive 4wd. You will scratch or break it and cry.
Buy some thing older, well sorted and THRASH!

Be warned 4wding is as addictive as racing, don't kid yourself.
You WILL thrash its living tits off, trying to impress your mates and climbing something insane.

Yeah have looked at a few at Wangara recently, and couple mates have the FJ's but thinking of going something different.

Have had experience with an 80's series landcruiser, was a beast, pretty reliable too and not bad on the juice.

I like the look of the new Colorado's but no idea how they are personally.

Have known a few people to have some huge problems with Jeeps, but you get the odd one here and there that are amazing.

Just go for something comfortable, spacious and reliable.

Got friends with everything, all think they're cars the dogs nuts, in the end it's always the Rubicon that beats everything else up/down/around.

Stock for stock ( or even with tyres ) Rubicon comes with everything - lower ratio boxes, electric front and rear diff locks, front swaybar disconnects. Better entry/exit then say your Patrol or Cruiser.

I'm happy with my little Sierra. Beach and in the hills it cruises along, don't have to worry about scratching or trashing my D40, just take the Sierra and plow into whatever.

NVIOUS

If you can find a 2nd hand Rubicon, that would require hardly any modification whatsoever, just some decent tires & it will climb any track WA could throw at it. I've owned 3 Jeeps now over the past 6 years and never had a single mechanical fault yet, (except leaking diffs but that was caused by w/shop installing locker/gears). Anytime I head out with mates (all cruiser & patrol owners) the Jeep is the only one not to get bogged, engage rear locker & it powers out no drama - they're shitloads lighter than cruiser/patrol which helps so much on sand (Smaller 2dr's are even better again). Only downside to the older 3.8L wranglers is lack of power, mine flys along well with a sprintex blower however - sounds mint whining away through dunes too :) If you can't afford the newer 3.6L then the old 2.8L diesels will prob be better than the 3.8L petrol, unless you do blower/turbo - though diesel not available in Rubicon. I picked up mine (non rubi) with blower, lift, 35's, barwork for 34k & only 60kms on it, so for your budget you should be able to get something with decent mods

IMO cruisers/patrols are better for touring/towing, if its pure offroading you can't beat a jeep

Get a HDJ100R (Landcruiser) and take it to GTurbo, it'll rooster tail along the beach at any speed in any gear.
Then will idle up hills with ease, fit 35s and have economy in the 11L /100Km with 300rwhp on tap.

Perfect for the beach, around town, and towing.

Leave the hairdresser Wrangler to the rock hoppers.

This is what annoys me, if you buy a 4x4 and take it off road, expect damage, everyone that doesn't actually own a y62 patrol goes on about how they're shit off road, shit on fuel, not a real patrol, with no personal experience at all, mine has just clicked over 22000km, I love the bloody thing, impresses myself and everyone I've been wheeling with, is covered in scratches, side steps are bent, bottom end of the rear bumper is scratched up, wouldn't have it any other way, I use it for what I bought it for, the fact its fantastic on the road, comfortable, heaps of grunt, good on fuel etc, very happy with it.

Everywhere I took my Pathy he followed, through branches and rocky areas and mud with shit in it.
Made me want one, if I had the cash I'd not hesitate, goes hard and is pimp inside as well.
